Plane sure is a Gerard Butler movie. And if that sounds good to you then you will have a blast. But Gerard Butler movies are fun to count sins for because they are so absurd.
Thursday: comedy sins from the '90s.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

Gerard Butler is such a nice dude. I randomly ran into him while walking my dog in downtown Birmingham Michigan when he was filming Machine Gun Preacher. I was caught off guard crossing the street with him. I was like holy crap, you're Gerard Butler. You're the man! He goes, no, you are the man! And gave me a wave as he went right and I went straight.

Haha I also met him in Michigan when he was filming that movie. He stopped by MSU for a Homecoming game and then was out getting wasted later that night, and he ended up chatting up (hitting on) me and some friends. And then several months later, I saw him out around Ann Arbor basically doing the same thing! Lol, super nice guy though... I kinda regret not going for it.

16:28 Having been an evacuee in an emergency situation involving a privately contracted mercenary group, this didn't seem unusual to me at all. The group that rescued us seemed very sketchy with the names and alleged facebook group they mentioned; they were communicating kind of among themselves hush-hush; etc. Some of us started to get worried about who we let help us. But in the end, never once did they go against any word of safety and well-being that they promised us. Everything else they said, they did exactly and everything they did on our behalf was generous, and they took full care of us. Point is, and I know it goes both ways, but there's probably a good reason they just openly give out their "names" like that.

@@specialagentweener1073 No I was just on a work term abroad as a regular civilian. Without getting too detailed, a crisis occurred there and it also affected several neighboring territories. Very stressful for everyone, but also tensions were building with the local people, which is very understandable. This group turned up a few days into the crisis, made their claim about who they worked for and said they were helping get out anyone who needed to leave. I wasn't familiar with the concept behind these contracted units, just what you see in movies. Everything about their appearance and all gave off the hollywood red flags, so some of us were pretty nervous. But no they turned out to be the complete opposite and learning just how skilled these groups can be was probably the best thing about the whole experience. They helped anyone who needed to leave like workers, students, tourists, etc. Their work ethic, I've yet to see matched. There was probably only like 10 or so total in that group, yet they were coordinating not just where I was, but the neighboring regions, in order to get people out of there as well. And all throughout, they remained positive, cheery and kept our spirits up with frequent conversations, etc. Even after getting us out, they didn't fully leave watch of us until we got to designated hotels with food agreements, all free. Just the coolest people I've ever met. And they're friggin' big people up close in real life, haha.

This was such an incredible comment to read. Sometimes it’s hard to get out of that bubble we live in where it feels like we’re the only people in the world. Hearing about the experiences others go through is a real eye-opener. I Can imagine that must’ve been scary at first for you but hearing about your fascination with the group as they took care of you guys makes the story less scary and more fascinating. @nanyubusnis9397

That's like saying "I would absolutely trust the buss driver to lead a survival.." They know how to drive a buss, not survive. Commercial plane pilots have their food and drink brought to them, and they don't lead anything or anyone. Unlike a captain of a ship, who is the leader over the crew, they just *pilot* the plane. The kind of training they've had and the years worth of piloting means they're least likely to know how to start a campfire than doing any survival. And despite their fancy clothes, it's nothing more than a uniform. There's no military training, there's no ranks. They have an impressive job, sure. But nothing that even suggests they'd be good leaders, let alone survivalists.

Also, you don't just LOSE the avionics, you lose POWER to them. Each and every system has multiple layers of redundancy built in to prevent that from happening. @amityislandchum
@amityislandchum Жыл бұрын
They had lost power though, so it's clear that "lost avionics" means all of the redundant systems have failed and they're gone. But I'm not a pilot -- is it REALLY that outlandish that pilots would say "lost avionics" in an event where all the power to the avionics had failed?
@Rekuzan

@@amityislandchum Also, I will point out the idea of a plane losing power like that because of lighting is idiotic at best. How many bullets can an airliner take before its not airworthy? A metric ASS ton if your not shooting the flight surfaces or engines. Its why B-17s were so tanky, planes are mostly just hollow tubes. Its only when its high up and pressurized that poking holes in it becomes a problem.
@zeobide
@zeobide Жыл бұрын
about how high up do you have to be for that a lot a bullet holes to become a problem? I assume they didnt get that high in this case but now I'm curious.
@CMDRFandragon
@CMDRFandragon Жыл бұрын
@@zeobide I think its more about the pressurized cabin. As the plane gets higher, it pressurizes and poking holes in something pressurized causes "Explosive decompression" and that tends to rip things apart, which is not good for a plane. Then if they are over 10,000 feet, the air is to thin to breathe, which can cause hypoxia if you dont get on oxygen fairly quickly, then your fked. Just look at Southwest 1380, engine exploded, a piece hit a passenger window, which caused explosive decompression and sent a passenger out the window, and she ultimately died. Or Aloha 243 I think it was, where a fatigue crack in the skin of the plane caused a HUGE section of the roof to just peel right off, a flight attendant got sucked out the plane and she died. Or Helios 522, they forgot to pressurize the plane properly and died to hypoxia. But if your at low altitude and not pressurized, you can poke TONS of holes in a plane, cuz its just a thin metal tube. Unless you hit the pilots, KO both engines(cuz planes can fly perfectly with 1 good engine) or you critically damage the flight surfaces and flight controls, you wont shoot the plane down.

@@Rekuzan Exactly. The plotline survives only upon an audience with zero - and I mean _zero_ - understanding of commercial aviation. Not to mention somehow landing a MD-90-that-wants-to-be-an-Airbus with limited spatial awareness in pitch darkness and somehow getting the thing down in one piece. I know the DC9-based linage of planes are flying tanks, but there's a limit to reality. Honestly, the 12-year-old flight geek kid across the street could draft a more convincing script than the fools who cooked this one up. My favorite issue with this whole turkey of torture (I won't call it a movie) is that if they realized they were in danger that could be more lethal than attempting to fly out of there...well, why didn't they make haste out of there with the daylight in the first place? After all, if Captain Gerard Butter can land that thing between the plot holes in pitch darkness with none of his precious avionics, he can damn well VFR the hell out of there.

01:00 🤔 Idk about all airports, but the one I work at. It's usually busy a day or 2 before a holiday, kind of calm on the day of that holiday, and back to being busy a day or 2 after the holiday. Mainly because of most ppl tryng to get to their destination the day before the holiday. Celebrating wherever they flew to on that day, then flying back home the next day.

Speaking of Gerard Butler movies, it still shocks me to no end that he was *this close* 🤏to receiving a real-life Phantom disfigurement during production on this film. From what I heard/read, he's *extremely* lucky to have escaped no lasting damage. 😌✈

"people travel on holidays" Nope. People travel before and after. I travelled on the holiday once. There were more flight crew than passengers. The announcement was "If you haven't noticed, there aren't people on this flight. We will not be doing a cabin service. If you want something, please ring your call button." I slept on my empty row of seats, and not once did the cart come past. It was a late flight on the holiday day. Most people try to get there for the holiday, not get there essentially the next morning. But then, the actual next morning, people are starting to travel back.

16:47 the strait of Malacca is a hotbed of piracy, Malaysia, the Phillipenes and others in the area have seperatist and terrorist movements. Private security and mercenary groups are fairly normal in the region being hired by shipping companies, mining companies and even governments for escorting/guarding duties while maintaining "plausible deniability"

Jolo is actually pronounced with a starting "H" instead of the Spanish "Y" - Huh-lo' with the first syllable spoken quickly with the stress on the last syllable using a short "o" sound. I'm no expert but the terrorists were speaking in Tagalog which is mostly spoken in the Luzon island where Manila is (north) instead of the native Tausug of the Sulu (south) region where Jolo is. The Datu dude unfortunately doesn't do a convincing tagalog accent, but such is Hollywood. Still an entertaining movie though.
