Next week: Recent adventure sins, recent horror sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

I used to think it was weird that Judge Turpin did't recognize him too, but now I think that it's a situation like Thanos saying to Drax "I don't even know who you are". Turpin has probably screwed and framed and stolen the lives of so many people that Barker was just another blurry face in a crowd of victims he didn't have the care to look at twice. He just wanted the guy's wife and baby, he didn't have a vendetta against him, he was a victim. On the other hand, Barker DID have a vendetta. The man stole everything from him, he can never forget this man's face for the rest of his life. There are people who messed with me and I'll never forget their face but I guarantee you if they bumped into me, they wouldn't recognize me from the thousands of other people they've bullied, robbed, or otherwise victimized.

@@shannonsteven3982 actually studies show that power hungry and egotistical people Typically only remember people and details they deem important. I forget the exact hypocritical scenario the researchers gave to summarize their findings but basically take Donald Trump, let's say that he doesn't have a person driver and instead hires a cab driver for the day, the driver takes him to an important meeting during that time let's say the driver swaps with another driver from the company for whatever reason, Trump leaves the meeting, enters the cab and instructs the driver to take him to the next destination, Trump doesn't notice this isn't his original driver. The reason being that the cab driver is only a temporary tool in Trump's mind, he doesn't need to know *WHO* the driver is nor does he care, he only needs to know he has someone to take him wherever he needs to go for the day and he'll probably never see him again so why bother remembering any details about him?

IT's not like now where everyone has photos of various people and we can recognize hundreds of people we don't know personally . The judge has probably had thousands of men before him and it wasn't like he expected Todd to ever make it back to London.

@@ashtonoak4370 90% of Cinemasins videos are them just shouting at the scren NOT actual critique of the film. Let me look at the first 10 sins in order: 1. Logo - He couldn't sin the length since the WB logo was shorter than his logo is so he sinned it for something NOT related to the film. 2. Narration - This isn't a continuity or sin of the film it's a method of delivering story beats to the audience that would otherwise get lost in a visual medium. 3. Raining Blood - Not a sin of the film, he's pointing out a story telling nuance to get the dark tone across. 4. Same exact sin as before of sinning a visual medium for having a bit of beautiful and intriguing visuals. 5. Calling the Bosprit of a ship a 'penus' for a joke. 6. He is correct Sweeny Todd takes place in 1845-ish and Tower Bridge wasn't started until 1886. 7. Pop culture reference to another film not related to this one. 8. Complains about an exposition song expositing where the singer has been all because he has to mentally plot out the course. Not a sin of the film more like a sin of him over complicating the scene. 9. Sinning Depp being in a Burton flick despite the fact that these two work amazing together. Same with Helena the three of them are a marvel in gothic film making. 10. Jeremy doesn't even make sense here, Anthonies lack of understanding is 100% why he has wide eyes of a summer child.... So in the first 10 sins there was 1 actual sin and a bunch of fluff filler sins. Because I want to prove how much of this is padding I will come back after finishing the video and count all the sins that are ACTUAL sins and how long the video would be if it was just sins. No film is without sin but cinemasins videos are 99% sin free

Anthony and Joanna are there as a way to show that history repeats itself. Anthony is drawn to her only because of her beauty (because, as we've seen, he knows literally nothing else about her but her face). It seems to have been the same with Todd and his wife. Johanna and Anthony’s “happy ending” is essentially that they survive. They’re both very different thinkers - it’s more than possible that each views the other as either a tonic for or an escape from a gloomy mindset. Their future is ambiguous, a hint that their comfort is only temporary - not unlike The Graduate’s Ben and Elaine.

Anthony is just "in love" with her face, and everything else about is just blanks he filled in with his imagination. I think it makes a lot of sense for Barker to go back to his old haunts right off the bat. As far as Turpin goes here, it's not his intelligence that's the problem. It's his hubris. The idea that anybody could ever come back, much less attempt revenge against the power he holds is unfathomable. He's also the kind of man who loves flattery, thus being told anything that makes him look appealing is something he latches onto. That's why Mr Todd could talk him into that final shave and never connected him to the former Mr Benjamin, even assuming he remembered much about the man. After all, he got his wife, and then the daughter, so in his mind, he already had his prize. Mr Benjamin was just something to be thrown away - so his story was something Trupin either did not know or did not care about.

I think one thing you probably could have added a bit into your research is the original play, and compare it to this. Some of the discrepancies between the two would explain why some plot points seem to not make sense. For example, in the original play, it is hinted that it took Todd a lot of time to teach Anthony how to be a Wigmaker. Or the fact that Johanna and Anthony actually did spend time with each other whenever the Judge was away at court.

Most adaptations just redo what you see in the play. That most of the time brings Movie viewers out of the film because there are many strange things that happen that Theater goers accept and can move past. Things such as the whole town singing about a story in which it is doubtful that most actually knew. Or random dance sequences. While I personally love that type of thing in musicals, it does not seem to make sense when it come to this kind of film. The stage version needs to be big and grandiose in spectacle to reach the back seats, where as the loudness and size of a movie makes it so everyone can hear well, and see well. So is it sad that they took out certain events in the play, yes. However I'd rather have my movie take itself a little more seriously, and keep most of the music to just banter between a couple people/an inner monolog. So to me as both a movie goer and a theater goer, I appreciate the ability to separate the two mediums and while still keeping faithful to the overall story and tone. That makes this adaptation one of the best, if not the best musical films. Have a good day!

Skipping “Not While I’m Around”? It’s not only a classic tune, it’s great character development. ‘Tis CinemaSins’ MO, I guess… I’d add that when Johanna says, “so we run away, and all our dreams come true?” she’s still looking horrified - like she’s fully aware of Anthony’s naïveté and how she *knows* that’s not the case. While she says it, she certainly doesn’t believe it.

I'm paraphrasing here but I've always like this exchange: Anthony: We run away and all our ghosts disappear. Johanna: No, Anthony. They never go away. Because it's true. Our ghosts from our past never disappear.
@psifla99

@@meginmd It's a TERRIFIC exchange. My favourite in the movie. A great contrast of Anthony’s naïveté and the damage done to Johanna, and an implication that their elopement will not end well.

Yeah, I think this Sins video is taking a lot of the Johanna/Anthony plot too much at face value, when I think it's supposed to be clear that Anthony is too naive and romantic for the world he's in (which, somehow, KEEPS WORKING for him, at if he's in a completely different musical than the rest of the characters), and Johanna is desperate enough to cling to any possibility of escape.

You missed a golden opportunity to either sin or remove a sin the scene immediately after he gets his razors back, where they make a not-so-subtle Edward Scissorhands reference. The scene where he extends an arm with a razor fully stretched out and exclaims "At last! My arm is complete!" Complete with an I-know-I-said smile on his face. EDIT: YES, it was an original part of "My Friends" predating Edward Scissorhands, however when you see and hear Depp do it, complete with the look on his face and the fact that he's already in a movie that prominently features cutting things.... It's a perfect accident.

Oh yeah..can't tell ya how upset it makes people when you point out the actual theme of every breath you take. There are honestly SO many songs like that where the writer was playing with the audience using the melody and delivery missconvey what was being said. The Fun song "Tonight, we are young" is another good example. When you make people aware it is about toxic relationships and domestic abuse, with the singer being rhe abuser convincing his victim/gf to stay; it upsets A LOT of people. It understandably is jarring when you have out-loud sung these songs happily only to learn they are written to be from the perspective of genuinly messed-up or ill people. It's similar hearing people you know are never to the truth singing them. You don't want to ruin things for them but it's also very awkward once you know and can't unknow the irony. It makes me feel a bit like Jeremy doing these videos and I NEVER want to feel like Jeremy doing these videos. I sin him for making me confront this connection. *ding*

Well, in all fairness, there is only that one reference to the protagonist giving his girlfriend a scar in "Tonight We are Young." I just now went and listened to it again with lyrics.
@buddyzilla4557
@buddyzilla4557 Жыл бұрын
@@messinalyle4030 But there is a lot more to it than that. The entire intro is playing out as a clue. He asks for a minute to get his story strait, starts by talking as if to someone else on the situation, mentions her discussing the situation that took place months ago with "some sunglasses" inferring an investigative authority figure, then turns the perspective toward her, recognizes she has been trying to forget it, recognizes her drinking while doing so in contrast to "subtle things" such as the "holes in his apologies" and tries to convince her once she is drunk enough to feel vulnerable he can be there for her. The rest of the song is him selling the great times they can have if they forget their troubles, presumedly while she is in this smashed state. He also hints at her having someone else but him still hopeing they can "find new ways of falling apart" only to cut this short when their friends arrive. Evidence she has moved on but he is still trying to pressure her to be close but also knows he shouldn't and only does so when they are alone. He further mentions the "moon being on his side" so that "there is no reason to run" and the "angels never arriving but him hearing the chior." This is more interpretive but could be a good hint he is hetting away with what he did to her. Again an interpretative stanza but two ways to do so would be more metaphorical for him being recognized for what he did but not facing full repercussions or a more direct one. The mention of not needing to run because the moon is on his side could be recognition that the night is dark so he can hide and the angels being police with their choir being the sirens her can hear nearby while lying low. Considering the intro frames him in a bar seeing his gf or ex gf talking to a possible authority figure about the domestic abuse he committed agaisnt her, it isn't hard to believe he could be avoiding an arrest at toward the end of the song. Regaurdless of this specfifx part; overall it is still pretty indicative of a manipulative and toxic relationship. It is done very quickly but expertly. Especially if you are someone who helps people in these situations or a past victim like myself; this shows the kinds of red flags that will be all too familiar. This is a great example of subtle artistic work and that's really the wpoint of these kind of songs. They purposely hide contrasting themes to how the melody makes you feel that will be obvious when analyzed but arn't no noticeable just enjoying the music.

"Sweeney Todd" is my favorite play. Period. As someone who has seen it performed live, twice, owns the Hearn/Lansbury DVD, and listened to the original Broadway soundtrack more times than I can count, I will tell you exactly what's wrong with this movie: Burton sapped all the energy and spirit out of it and gave it a gothy make over so he could market it to the Hot Topic crowd. Worse, he woobified Mrs. Lovett. Mrs. Lovett is not a whispery moon eyed, sad girl who just wants wuv. She's a devious, manipulative, middle aged spaz. She kicks up her heels and has fun during "A Little Priest." She uses and gaslights Toby. She squawks like a seagull. She is not there for your pity. Go ahead. Downvote me because this is the only version you know and you grew up with it and blah blah blah. Or you could do yourself a favor and find one of the stage productions. RIP Angela Lansbury.

We got to this movie and everybody was not showing any true interest in it. But then the ending started to happen. And one guy got up onto all fours on his cot and was just crawling towards the screen of the laptop going 'what? no, no, what? no, you're kidding, what? what? no!" and the cot went up over itself due to his weight on just one end and he slapped his face into the concrete floor of the building we were in but he pops up, face bleeding, and just stares at the laptop going 'noooooo'
