I can kind of see it fitting the Institute Rifle, and just barely the laser rifle but yeah still a huge yeesh. I'm not even sure the technology on it makes sense artwise, in the Fallout universe they never figured out conductors like we did, thus no mobile phones, flat screen tvs, nor nice little computers. I think the Combat Rifle was born out of a weird history. I think the Combat Shotgun was made first, as a “redesign” of the Fallout 3 Combat Shotgun, “fixing” it by moving the drum back to a more reasonable spot. Then, without a combat rifle and no care to add a unique one, they just gave the Combat Shotgun a .45 rechamber with some different magazines and called it a day.

As for the BAR in .308/7.62x51 instead of 30-06, it's a fairly easy conversion. This was done en-mass to many WW2 era 30-06 weapons when NATO adopted the 7.62x51. The Garand, Browning 1919, etc... were often converted to use the .308 type cartridge, so it's definitely possible for that to have been done with BARs as well.

I would've been fine with this. Natty G's still using old but reliable stuff due to issues with logistics. F3 was fine in this regard with the prevalence of FAL/G3 hybrids chambered in 5.56x45mm. But then came F4 and for some reason the Commonwealth National Guard got sets of new T-60 power armor because "rool ov kewl" in the prewar prologue, and the prevalence of pipe weapons in master locked military safes inside 200+ year old sealed bunkers, and the asinine "standard issue" weapons that would've been outdated at the end of WWII. Really. T-60 should've been a Brotherhood of Steel exclusive power armor. Made as replacement upgrades for aging T-45s they had. While the prewar prologue National Guard should've been using T-45 instead. Pipe weapons should be removed from any prewar military installation loot tables. And conventional ballistic firearm design (not including laser, plasma, cryo, and the like) should be completely scrapped and replaced with realistic designs. There'd be 2 prevailing design philosophies. Prewar and postwar. Prewar is basically carbon copies of ours. With some upgrades and additions to our current ones to portray 2070's weapons. Really old prewar weapons for example would be Korean to WWI weapons. Modern 2070's prewar weapons would be really rugged, metal reinforced M16s with ACOGs or Mk19's with carry handles for power armor. Postwar would be prewar weapons redesigned to be as easy to manufacture in the post apocalypse but still be reliable and useable as possible. An example would be an M16 with simply made wood furniture, no dust cover, no T-handle, no carry handle, no forward assist, simple notch and post sights, straight magazines, semi automatic by default, and a long screw on the bolt to act as the charging handle.

this "gun" the combat rifle would compare to the NG having smooth bore brown bess rifles on storrage in case of emergency. the "combat rifle" is by all means obsolete even by fallout timeline standard as the divergens happens in the late 1950´es when something like the FN-Fal, the CETME-L, the AKM, the G3, and even the first incarnations of the M16 does exist, other games in the fallout series especially prior to fallout 3 has more "modern" assault rifles SMG´s MG´s in their arsenals. even in fallout 2 they have P90 PDW´s. the MP5-sd exist in fallout tactics, the G3 in 5.56x45 exist in fallout 3, the XM-117e2 exist in New Vegas.

My suspicion is that they originally intended to recreate the R-93 (G-3) in FO4, but due to some combination of development crunch, legal concerns over the similarity to a real world firearm, and meddling theory of "game balance", the team had to drop it, and cludged together the combat rifle late in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if it came down to a spreadsheet with slots for different level ranges and enemy groups, where they had to have something to plug into each cell. That would also explain the monstrosity that is the 'assault rifle', i.e. "we need a mid-level full auto by default gun that looks appropriately sized for super mutants. But we don't want to call it an MG because that has certain connotations for damage/ammo..." Terrible reasoning, but very much standard game dev.

Fun Fact during the early years of the US involvement in WWII there a debate within the US Arsenal to make the BAR the standard battle rifle for US forces. The plan was to convert them to Semiauto which would allow them to reduce the weight of the rifle. That would make it light enough to be used for riflemen. The assault rifle was designed to have something that would look good while wearing power armor. Thankfully, if you install an assault rifle mod like the G3, HOWA, or Chinese assault rifle, most gunners will carry those instead, and the assault rifle (which I took a mod to rename “machine gun” and rightfully so, it’s modeled after the Lewis Gun) becomes a much more rare appearance. Even Kellogg carries an mod-supplemented AR in his memory cutscene. In mine he entered the room with a HOWA rifle. Was stoked, he looked much cooler carrying something practical.

Fun fact: the R91 was adopted by the US Army in 2075 as the primary assault rifle due to rampant materials shortages at the tag end of the War, displacing the long-serving M16 and its variants. I'm not sure how those work either, or how'd you'd salvage the ammunition from them, but it's a feature. *The smaller turrets you find in pre-war installations use 10mm or MFCs. this, plus the combat shotgun and the combat rifle are supposed to be the same gun. 5.56x45mm and the most common 2.75in 12 guage shells are about the same length so they could share a common magwell. 5.56 has about 6 times the pressure of a 12 guage so if the receive could take 5.56 it could take 12 gauge. the bolt, extractor, and barrel would have to be changed, both because of the greater diameter of 12 guage and the fact that it's a rimmed casing.

I'd like to think that the Combat Rifle was only for the national guard of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that sacrificed modernity for versatility and ease of manufacture (although we really don't see a small arms factory in FO4). Perhaps the designers had a PPSH-41 and a BAR in their reference collection and thought to just mash them together. This would explain why it looks really simple and mashup of PPSH-41 (for the simplicity and ease of manufacture) and the BAR M1918A2 (for the .30 caliber round and sustained fire capability). More can be manufactured in a short time frame, so it kind of makes sense to me. So while the national guard had that, the actual military had the R91 and was in the process of adopting the Laser Rifle on a wider scale. Although the counter to this explanation would be, "The army should have just passed down the older R91's to the national guard" and I agree with that since it would ease tensions on the manufacturing part, but I guess Bethesda never thought about that. I still don't like the combat rifle and all the vanilla mods, but I like to create my own lore to sort of justify it, but this doesn't always work out (i.e. the FO4 Assault Rifle). What do you guys think about my explanation?

The problem is that the developers of Fallout have barely any firearms knowledge and probably didn't know this. In the Fallout 3 canon it's established that the US uses the R91 as it's ballistic service rifle and the R91 is clearly a CETME/HK roller delayed blowback family rifle. On top of that they chambered the R91 in 5.56 which means that the US, instead of adopting the homegrown AR-15, actually use a HK33/CETME-L style of rifle. It would have made much more sense for them to go with the alternate universe "what if the FAL won" scenario but they didn't.

Even the DLC preferred to add more ammo types over use the existing AMO types it's so stupid. No in development the assault rifle was going to use 50 BMG and be power armor only, but they decided not to have it be power armor only so they changed it from 50 BMG to 5.56 and bumped the combat rifle down from 5.56 to 45 ACP. Seriously the only gun that can even use 50 BMG in unmoded fallout 4 is the hunting rifle rechambered into it, no gun inaitly fires it.

The thing is. With how _Bethesda_ wrote _their_ lore, the US was the dominant superpower until the nukes hit in 2077. So the US having these odd and subpar performing last ditch weapons doesn't make sense.

@@DJWeapon8 knowing bethesda they probably just throw a random bs card, like the pre war magazine that explain how to make pipe guns that they made to explain why theres pipe guns on safes and dead pre war skeletons

I actually like the combat rifle. Looks like a nice civilian semi-auto like the Remington Model 8, but with the atompunk style of Fallout. I did install a mod that gives it a pistol grip and changes the mag depending on the ammo you use for it though. Looks like a nice PCC that can have a couple different stocks or just no stock as opposed to the weird cut off stock. Definitely wouldn’t use a replacer on it imo. That and the Rangemaster add a lot of variety and introduces the category of civilian/police market rifles into the game.

Daks overhaul does a pretty good job making the combat rifle not total rubbish visually(and rechambers it to use 556). Although I think i like everyone else would have rathered an actual weapon based design.

The fact that you didnt include the FAL is heresy, or even the colt xm4… but much love! ❤️

I personally use Dak’s Combat Rifle overhaul. Because it makes it look better and not just a Combat Rifle copy with only using 45 rounds.

It really stings. I was using Wasteland Melody's Service Rifle for more than a hot minute to replace it as it felt fantastic, but after a while realized the damage numbers were nuclear on the thing - the .308 upgrade does about 55 base damage on the combat rifle while the SR was doing 105, and that's all before perks doubled that damage. Really wish we got automatic rifle weapons that weren't, well, the ones in the base game. Replacers have been sweet, but I end up staring at the damage numbers in FO4Edit & the Workbench at this point to make sure they don't ruin the tricky Jenga tower of balance that vanilla and mods have to hope they can be. I miss DT/DR so much T_T

One of my biggest irks is how the rear of the magazine well (?) just screams drum mag, yet you cannot even use a drum mag.

The G3 is certainly an aesthetic firearm, but I have to give some love to the battle rifle of battle rifles, the “Right Arm of The Free World,” universal weapon of the free world during the Cold War (expect for ‘Merica I do admit), the FN FAL. There’s a great mod for it I use and it makes a lot of sense in lore too. Even in America, these were imported irl and if the G3 made it into service then it makes sense the FAL would’ve been adopted too
