This movie has sins, several just for trying to make it seem like P.T. Barnum was a super nice and swell guy. TLDR: he wasn't.
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

When the green dress Zendaya's character wears gets talked about: historically accurate as 19th century introduced a bright green dye which was very popular and used in pretty much everything, but was made using arsenic so it was also making people sick and killing them too. So Zendaya's character would be being slowly poisoned in that scene on the theater stairs when they meet his parents who berate him for bringing her. Who knows, maybe somebody was thinking that dress color would be symbolic, considering the history of that particular color dye.

What's completely nuts, is the movie would've probably been multiple times more popular if they had just called it, "The Greatest Show", and added a disclaimer at the beginning that says something along the lines of, "The story of P.T. Barnum has been altered for the production of this movie. We encourage you, the viewer, to do your own research about P.T. Barnum, and his show, before making any judgements on his character."

The music in this movie is actually amazing, and I wanted you to remove more sins for that, but then I remembered how all the music is totally wasted on a plot that isn’t that interesting in a movie that is glorifying someone who in real life was a bad person, and claiming to be telling his story. I would’ve loved this movie if it was told from literally ANY other character’s perspective than Barnum himself. Or they could’ve just made the whole thing fictional and not a representation of something in real life. It could be more like a fairytale of how the first circus came to be and the main characters could be actual good guys... Anyway, sorry that this turned into a rant, my point is; great music was wasted on a mediocre (at best) and controversial movie.

Barnum is actually the reason we use the word jumbo to denote something huge. Because of an elephant names Jumbo which was the first African elephant kept in captivity, which he bought from the London zoo. And of course, he claimed Jumbo was the largest elephant in the world, though he was only 24 years old, and male African elephants continue growing into their 40s. Jumbo died about a year later after being sideswiped by a train.

When this movie came out I had just suffered a major loss. I decided to go to the theater to get my mind off of it and asked the ticket person to recommend something that would make me forget about the troubles of life. She chose this movie. I had seen part of a trailer before going in. During the song A Million Dreams I cried my eyes out. I don’t exactly know what it was about the song but it made me so sad but also so much more hopeful about my future. So yeah. The movie had its flaws. It’s definitely glorifying PT Barnum. But the songs and the stories behind them made this the beloved classic that it is. People are still listening to these songs today. That’s what OP was talking about. I feel bad for anyone who can’t see this.

To add to the bar scene, if you pay attention, a lot of the shots Barnum is taken his glass is either empty, half full, or he doesnt take them at all. While he was on the piano, he wasnt actually playing, thats why he shut it when the Zac Effron's charayer looked at it, so he wouldn't notice it was a self playing piano. He also didnt take the shot, he left once the other guys back was turned.

As an actual ballerina, I can in fact confirm you have to train for years and years to even relevé on pointe. Even after that, it takes another year or two to do more advanced things like pirouettes on pointe. Your ankles would probably immediately snap after going up on pointe if you put them on without years of practice. You also might not even be able to go up on pointe at all without building up the strength in your ankles.

Since they were already fictionalizing much of PT Barnum's life, I feel like this whole thing would be more palatable if they had just made the characters all fictional, and let the audience draw the parallels to real historical figures. Also PT Barnum was a successful and popular politician, but that's never mentioned in the movie.

My one and only problem with the movie is that I wish Chang and Eng (The Siamese Twins) had lines or at least more screen time, they were part of the original Barnum circus yet the movie pushed them to be background characters, not as much as like those albino twins but you know and if anything they had a much more interesting life. That just to show representation on screen for conjoined twins.

I'm surprised there wasn't a sin for the Opera singer not singing ANY Opera whatsoever in this whole fking movie. That was my absolute biggest pet peeve in the whole movie. Otherwise I loved the music and the movie

Cecili T She was singing opera from the point of view of the characters, it was just different from our points of view so that it would be a bigger hit with modern society. Didn’t you notice the other songs would not be sung in that time period either?

TheDeadlyMedley well my thing is not that's it's periodically inaccurate it's that everyone in the movie "classified" her for Opera and I was expecting an opera style song to come from her and I honestly wouldn't have minded I was looking forward to it.

5:56 It's Professor Harold Hill, not Henry 9:38 Paris Green was an extremely vibrant shade of green created with copper and arsenic. It was super popular during this time period before they discovered how terrible it was for your skin. It's actually one of the more accurate costume things in this movie.

Just like how there are so many accounts of women dying of 'broken hearts' during times of mourning, when they were just slowly being poisoned in the arsenic in the black dye (I think it was arsenic... it may have been something else)

I honestly never liked this movie and don’t understand the hype about it. The backstory of The Greatest Show on Earth is sad, and it’s just not a good story overall. Just my opinion.

What he doesn't realize is that the song, "A Million Dreams" is literally telling the story of how they made their own family from nothing. So of course they're always going to remember that song because it's technically a promise the made to each other. And I think it was cute when their daughters sung it, showing that what they wanted was mostly completed

I knew very little about P.T. Barnum prior to seeing this film, but it's pretty clear that although the music, editing, sound work, and performances were truly outstanding... I now know even LESS about the actual P.T. Barnum. 🤔 That deserves a dozen sins right there. *DING* x 12! 🎭🎶🎭
