Let’s face it, wine can be confusing. It doesn’t have to be this way. Delicious booze should be understood and appreciated by all. Patrick Cappiello, the award-winning wine director at Rebelle in New York City, completely agrees. So he is going to break down the basics of the most common wine varietals you’ll find in a store or at a restaurant. He starts with Pinot Noir, explaining the qualities of the grape, regions where it grows best, proper glassware, what a good one will look, smell and tastes like, food pairings and other varietals to try if you find you like Pinot Noir.

Great! I like the guy and I trust him. I love specially that in his description doesn’t start to find a thousand and one nuances. Also he speaks about general character of wine that is just fine for a guy like me. Well made clip.

" it's a hard grape to grow, as you know. Right? It's uh, it's thin-skinned, temperamental, ripens early. It's, you know, it's not a survivor like Cabernet, which can just grow anywhere and uh, thrive even when it's neglected. No, Pinot needs constant care and attention. You know? And in fact it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked away corners of the world. And, and only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time to understand Pinot's potential can then coax it into its fullest expression. Then, I mean, oh its flavors, they're just the most haunting and brilliant and thrilling and subtle and... ancient on the planet." Miles

That's exactly why if you take care of this variety of grape, you will be highly rewarded when you pop that cork! To get the best it takes care and nurturing..

There's a lot a bad pinot out there. I tend to steer clear of the variety all together unless I have first hand knowledge of the quality in the bottle. it's a shame to, because a good pinot really sings to me.

So you describe some pinots as being more "masculine" depending on where in Burgundy be they are produced. Yet you describe the flavor pairings as "feminine". Last time I checked grapes don't have a gender.

I would dispute his characterization of Volnay as a "masculine" wine. In my experience Volnay is usually considered to be a more elegant and "feminine" expression of Pinot Noir.

Paul Wilk exactly my thoughts! if i were looking for something more masculine and robust, i'd rather have something from Gevrey-Chambertin.
