Not really, four drs zones i think are gonna be better. You wont have that crazy scenarios like in saudi arabia because there are two detection zones for four drs zones, plus you have two divebomb possibilities in four drs zones: turn 1 and turn 11

I've been thinking about this as well. Kinda stupid to give DRS for two zones when the driver might be not even close to eligible for it on the later one. This would at least make it a tactical choice instead, though having DRS from quarter of a lap earlier would still be kinda stupid.

2 problems with 4 DRS zones: 1. Drivers won't have a chance to break out of a car's DRS zone, because 2 corners after passing someone with DRS, there's another zone for them to catch up with. Even a car with a significant pace advantage will struggle to get more than 1s ahead of the car behind. 2. With only 2 detection points and half of the lap driven with DRS, who gets DRS will be even more important, and we could see more shinannigans at the detection points.

What they've essentially done is remove/reduce most of the braking zones. Tough to overtake when there's very little braking. Which also explains why they've decided to go for 4 DRS-zones at the last minute.
@rvfharrier
@rvfharrier 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. The braking zones they've removed were never really overtaking spots to begin with because there wasn't enough track leading up to them. There are now less braking zones, but the ones that remain are on paper a lot more likely to be overtaking spots than they were before because of lengthier straights going into them; and in addition some of them have been tightened up, meaning the braking is now heavier there. Theoretically it's all good for overtaking, just have to see how it works out now.

I'm hoping these changed does make the track better for racing (although the now excessive use of drs zones is just asking for another "drs chicken part 3") but they heavily altered/removed my two favorite parts of the circuit (turn 6 and the 9/10 chicane) so I'm a little bummed by that. Let's hope the changes were worth it, I'm glad Australia is back

Agreed on that one. Really remember the Aussie GP for turns 1, 6 and 9, and the "Melbourne-esque" exit from those onto 2, 7 and 10. That, plus the crazy 11/12 section is what really made the track stand out in my opinion, so it does feel kind of bland now. Still interesting, but I think it lost a bit of it's own excitement. Hopefully the racing will make that worth it, but I still think the new section after turn 6 just doesn't feel like Melbourne anymore...

Where I live (Ontario Canada) practice, Quali and the race all start around 1am which is going to be a pain in the ass. But I imagine the excitement will keep me awake at least til the start of the race but one or two yellow or red flags could be my downfall. However, 99% of the races start at a decent time for me, 6 am is the earliest, so I really have nothing to complain about. I'll still bitch about it 😆 even though I really have no right to considering in some parts of the world almost every race starts at shit time. I've heard people say that many races start at 3 or 4 am for them So for people in those places/countries I honestly hope the Australian GP starts at a good time for you because everyone deserves to have at least a few races each season where they don't have to get up at, or stay up till, some ungodly time of day.

@@reid1420 it's because of the location not because how dangerous it's, that's what I mean biased voting, the voted tracks are in locations not liked by the west nowadays, like Russia + Saudi + China + Qatar + UAE.... Jeddah literally had 0 incidents in last F2 race + only one (technical) incident by Latifi in F1, yet people said too dangerous for F1, the missiles on Jeddah killed 0 in over a year time, but US have thousands of mass murders or stabbing deaths yet got 3 tracks per season! @@TRX25EX Sochi isn't liked mainly because it's a god awful track. There's no elevvation changes, the corners are all medium speed 90⁰ corners and it's built like a street circuit around a stadium or smth. There's just nothing about Sochi that's interesting tbh. Same thing with Qatar. China has the the first 4 turns but that's about it. The races aren't particularly exciting so I can understand that. I'm in favour of Abu Dhabi remaining on the calendar, since we haven't seen the new cars go around that layout yet. Removing 9/10 will just transfer the spread of the field to 11 and 12. Truth is i don't think it will help much, at least not as much as the 4 drs zones, even with the new cars. I'm not an expert and i could most definitely be wrong but at the end of the day i don't think that f1 will change that much without a more profound alteration of the race rules. Imo making DRS a quota during the race, where, the furthest you are from first place, the more you can use it; would most certainly change things up. That way slower cars gain time on the leading cars in the straights (+coincidently helps with porpoising) That would be an impactful change. Because when you think about it, all those changes we got for 2022 don't make overtaking easier on an absolute scale, it does it relatively compared to how much harder it was made due to the way the cars produced dirty air previously. Those rules try to achieve a net neutral in an absolute scale, which they maybe came close to doing. Following cars are always going to be slower in a corner, because the driver doesn't have clear visibility of his braking point, etc and more generaly has to react to what happens in front. Wanting the field to be close together in a sport where hard to change engineering tricks dictate 95% of the race pace is litteraly working against the nature of the sport and what said nature implies on track. So if you want it, you have to create rules going against the nature of the sport, ie, giving an advantage to slower car (which classic drs does, but in a fainter way than what i proposed above.) Don't get me wrong, i want the field to be closer, don't take me for one of those purists that want it the way it was 20 years ago. I'm just saying that shallow changes aren't necessarily going to make it that much better. I might totally be wrong but those are my thoughts.

To me, the Australian GP has always been like Monaco without the prestige of qualifying on Saturday.

If the cars do in fact get down to the 1:15’s, the average lap speed in qualifying will be over 156 mph (250 km/h). That will make it the third fastest circuit of the year behind Monza and Jeddah- only about half a mile an hour slower than Jeddah.

My first thought after hearing the changes was that they clearly wanted higher speed. 4 DRS zones i do NOT like atall. There is supposed to be some lvl of skill involved in overtaking and not just pushing a button after every 3rd corner. Unless Red Bull has a mechanical issue coming this Sunday i am expecting 2 Red Bulls at the top of the podium. Red Bulls engine is already the fastest on the grid and with 4 DRS zones i cant se Ferrari ever managing to brake away.
