RACK GRADES ARE SOLD AS IS WITH NO RETURNS OR EXCHANGES. Rifle wear will be exhibited by worn and mixed colors of the finish; there will be rust and pitting on the metal parts; wood will be basically sound but may be well used with minor hairline cracks, poor fit, many digs, scratches and gouges; wood may not match in color, type of wood or condition. These rifles may have some foreign parts and wood may be Walnut, Birch, Beech or other variety. Rifles do not have import marks. Bores will be dark and poor; the barrel crown may be nicked, and the muzzle may gauge more than “3” on muzzle gauge. The Throat Erosion may gauge more than “5”. The rifle is head spaced with a field guage and function fired. The overall appearance and condition of the rack grade will generally be rougher than any other grade. Fair condition.

Bought my first Garand in the late 1970's just after I turned 18. I found it in the sporting goods section of the F.W. Woolworth at my local mall. They had two barrels, one filled with M1903's for $250 each and one filled with M1 Garands at $300 each. If I knew then what I know now I'd have both barrels, but funds were tight then so I only bought one, a 3,10x,xxx S/N built in July of 1944 . Some old guys thought I paid too much but she was in great shape and I've been shooting her sparingly ever since. I bought a second one because I have two sons and I'm sensing a fight coming when I'm gone over which one gets the Garand. Now there's one for each. Thank God my daughters don't care or I could go broke.

First time out, the rack grade shot 1/2” three shot group at 25 yds, using ammo available from CMP....and an empty five pound coffee can for a front rest!!! Now I’m excited! Gonna shoot it like I bought it!!! Thanks guys!!!

I have a great original m1 already. But have been thinking about building a shooter. One that has a good barrel and functions well. But other than that a beater. That I can use to teach young people to shoot with. And teach history at the same time. Is there a grade for ones like that? A rack grade plus. That has a new barrel instead of a new stock. Or maybe even one that has massive amounts of pitting that still works with a good bore. In other words looks are not important at all. But functioning is. Thank you for all the CMP does to teach shooting skills and keeping history alive.

The rack grade shoots very well considering the used barrel. We also offer new barrels for sale on our site if you want to go that route. The only rifle we currently sale with a new barrel is the Expert Grade. We have a video up covering that as well if you are interested. Thank you for helping teach the youth. I bought my first M1 from the cmp in December as something me and my Grandfather could mess around with. I decided on a Rack+ to have the nice stock and the rifle I got I'm actually very pleased with. I'm not gonna lie and say I'm very meticulous or know all there is to know about m1 collecting. But my granfather is a Vietnam veteran that remembers training with the m1 and the one I got from the CMP was a 53 H&R, a lot closer to what he probably trained with in the late 60s. There is pitting on the receiver, but it is so small you have to look really hard to notice it. Most of the pitting is on the underside where it meets the stock so it can't be seen anyway. And all the other parts look great. The biggest downside is yes the barrel was rough, but it was from 43 so I have no complaints. And as soon as my grandfather saw it he had the biggest smile on his face. He grabbed it from me and said, "I remember this heavy sucker." He then told me how he got his rifle expert medal with an m1 that had a worn trigger group. I hope to get some more money together and buy another m1 soon so we can both have one.

I got my second M1 this past August. Pitting is what you described- very minor with the majority on the underside of the receiver. Both of them are H&R; my Service is a 57 and the Rack is a 56 iirc. Most of the parts were replaced during it's life and are SA. Even though the front sight has some play I put a Schuster gas plug in it and it's the one I take to the range. My older son loves shooting it and I hope to give it to him one day. The Service grade is mine.

I know luck in the selection process is a huge factor but on average what kind of accuracy is it reasonable to expect from a rack grade gun? Really just want one for the sake of owning a piece of history but I’d like to hunt or shoot a match with it occasionally and would like to know if I should just assume it needs a fresh barrel for that not to be an exercise in frustration.

Every rifle is unique in a lot of ways so we can't say for sure with each one. On a lot of rifles that is the case. Luckily on some rifles you can track your serial number to certain events, but this can take a lot of time and research. With the wear on the stocks being the most noticeable on these rack grade rifles you can tell where some of it came from. One of the most common wear patterns is a group of 8 small dents in the wood where someone tapped the enbloc on the stock to even out their rifle rounds.

If they can send a rifle out whole you bet they do. If there are good parts on an unusable receiver, they will pull them and use them elsewhere when possible. Nothing goes to waste. Just like a traditional armory would do

When evaluating the rifle we use the same grading criteria in our armory as you'll see on the website. After we clean the rifle up and insure its full functionality we grade it accordingly. It can vary widely depending on the box we pull them out of. Some are defiantly have more character than others.

@@CivilianMarksmanshipProgram To expand on my earlier comment, if the gun is essentially “new” for expert grade why is there a problem using heavier or lighter bullets?
@CivilianMarksmanshipProgram
@CivilianMarksmanshipProgram Жыл бұрын
@@blindfromthesun The M1 Garand requires the correct bullet weight to function safely. Bullets that are too light can cause the gas system to malfunction and fail to cycle the action, while bullets that are too heavy can create excessive pressure that can damage the rifle and cause injury to the shooter. It is important to note that the M1 Garand was designed in the 1940s and was optimized to handle a specific range of bullet weights within the .30-06 cartridge. Modern ammunition, especially some of the heavier varieties, may not be suitable for use with the M1 Garand, even with a new barrel. We hope this helps clarify some things.
@nichevo1
@nichevo1 Ай бұрын
@@CivilianMarksmanshipProgram while understandably it would be no concern of yours, I understand there is a tunable gas port aftermarket fitting available. This would allow the use of varying bullet weights. Can you recommend or supply the part to rechamber the piece in .308? Can you recommend optic mounts for things like red dot sights, ideally to replace or attach to the rear sight base rather than involving any drilling and tapping?
