Күн бұрынIf there's one military rifle that is a must have for any collection, it is the M1 Garand. It was a very innovative rifle for the timeframe leading up to WW2. Being that they are highly sought after, they are very expensive... unless you know where to look. There's a government charted non-profit organization called The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). They promote firearms safety and marksmanship. In their stores and on their website, they sell M1 Garands, M1903s, Krags, and a few other military surplus weapons and accessories. The M1s they have are some of the cheapest you can find. There's a catch though... you have to meet their eligibility requirements, which are quite simple. The sad part is, not many people know of the CMP and we continuously see people getting ripped off. This is an informational video to spread awareness of the CMP and the cheap rifles you can get from them.

Excellent advice. I was turned off by buying a M1 through the CMP for a while because of the hoops to jump through plus at the time, this was before the Philippine returns and the CMP was bone dry. A tip for the marksmanship training portion of the CMP requirement (if you do not have a law enforcement or military background or a CCW license) is to do a shooting competition at a local range. Just make sure that you can easily get a printed copy of the match results with your name on it for when you order a rifle from the CMP or visit one of the stores. Store these results since you might need them again if you want to purchase a 1911 from the CMP later. For the gun club portion I would recommend the Garand Collectors Association. This is a universally accepted club by the CMP and the one that most people who purchase rifles and pistols from them use.

I bought my M1 Garand and 1911a1 from the CMP. I treasure them both and love shooting them. Such a privilege to own a piece of history.

35 years ago I went to an auction. There were pallets upon pallets of boxed M1s. There were display cases full of Browning Hi Powers. I left with an M1 for about $179, and a Belgian-made BHP for $249 if I remember correctly. Didn't think about buying more, because back then neither were as difficult or expensive to get as now. I still have them both.

To go through the CMP: all you have to do is join the Garand Collector's Association online, then scan your license to carry, and you can purchase an M1 from the CMP shipped straight to your front door (no FFL required). You'll get a genuine forged-receiver M1 for much less than a forged M1a from Bula or LRB. It's a steal!

@@Jeff-pc1zu It is actually true and I agree it may be odd to have to prove proficiency but you're buying it from a Fudd organization. what do you expect lol. the reasona CCW is accepted is because generally speaking you would have much more firearms knowledge than the average person or even average gun owner. Obviously, not always true though. especially now.

I became a member of the CMP in 1981, so I could buy an M1. I ended up with 4. 3 are shooter grade, and 1 is a number's matching ( the only one not rebarreled in the 50s) . I would tell anyone who is looking for one to not just buy the first one you see. I've seen a few that are unsafe to fire! The one's from the CMP have been inspected by qualified people, and while they are not prefect looking. They are safe to use!

Many moons ago I purchased one from a friend, it was a Blue Sky rebarrel in excellent condition and way below current prices considering it was bought 30 years ago. It’s a tack driver at 100+ yards. The demand for these rifles has driven the prices to ridiculous levels. People who pay anything over $1000 are totally nuts, they are the reason why there are over inflated prices on these firearms.

I highly recommend making the trip to CMP. Call ahead, sometimes they'll tell you when they're putting up a new bunch of rifles and you can get first pick. And you never know what you'll find, I picked up a minty 1903a3 during the CMP games about 5 years ago.

I got mine through the CMP. What you forgot to explain was the CMP offers different grades, mostly depending on what's available at the time. I very specifically waited until a "Special" grade Springfield Armory version was available and grabbed it for about $1,000. Special-Grade means a refinished receiver and trigger group with a brand new Criterion barrel and brand new American Walnut stock. I didn't want a "museum / display" piece. I wanted something as close to an original M1 off the factory line ready to shoot.

Thank you for promoting the CMP. While you point out you have no promotional association with them. I cannot think of more deserving firearm organization of everyone's support. I am lucky to live an hour away from the North Store and compete in the National Matches every summer. It is the pinnacle event of my year, every year, for the last 12 or so years. All the proceed of the sales go to support the CMP and the grow their educational endowment for perpetuity... as opposed to other organizations where the money could go for chief executive's expensive wardrobe and glitzy apartments. 😅😅😅

great info....i have two from the CMP.....field grade from 2020 that is sweet, and a special rack grade from 2021 that looks like new...went to a local shop about a month ago, they had two Garands going for pretty much 3x what I paid

I've done 5 M1 Garands from the CMP, two M1 Carbines, and I've had there custom shop restore an M 1917, three M1's and a 1903. A few of those rifles were purchased when the CMP would still mail them right to your door and only cost me like $400 a rifle. I got a 1911, surplus M1 carbine mags and ammo, and a 1903 WWII bayonet and scabbard from them as well.

I bought my Garand through the DCM in 1989 for $165, delivered by mail to my door. The serial number matches the production run for 1944. I was participating in Military Match events with a local gun club at the time, so I purchased an after market match barrel for it, which was installed by a friend. Still shoots better than I can see at my age :)

Garand prices outside the CMP are insane, Cabela's near me has generic Springfield post war rebuilds and mixmasters for 1800$ and up, some are 2000$

The Cabela’s close to me has some a few Benjamin’s away from $5K ! They were IH & Winchester and i about fell over ! The others were in the $2600.00 + as were the M1 Carbines they had . I was thinking what a good investment I made when I bought all of mine under a thousand dollars each .

You nailed it here. I have a CMP Garand I purchased 5 years ago. Looks brand new $700. I feel they should limit them to one per year. Too many take advantage of it and re-sell for profit.

I plucked blueberry bushes out with my excavator for 8 hours, and got my m1 garand and 500 rounds of fmj and 100 ap. Next day root rake with my dozer got a 1903A3 in beautiful condition but no ammo

My first CMP M1 Garand was a Winchester in the Grade about Service, cost a little more, but the SN date has it just after Pearl Harbor being attacked, so thought the assembly of this was truly warrior bound . . . .

I purchased an M-1 Garand from the CMP in 2000. It is a Springfield, 1944, that was fitted with a new Springfield barrel dated "65". It is 100% Springfield. The barrel is a "0". I will own it until, I go to Valhalla,

The nice thing about the CMP is, they stand by their products. If it dose not function properly they will repair it or even exchange the rifle. If you are an avid Garand guy I highly recommend going to their build course. You are instructed in how to assemble a M-1and build your own special grade rifle. Sadly this course is done on a lottery basis.

In the South store, there have been M1903s, M1903A3s, M1917s, Air rifles, and even Krag Jorgensen rifles. Depends when they get surplus and when they put them out in the store

As the man said in the video, be careful and wise when buying outside of the CMP. I've seen these CMP resale rifles on Gun Broker and if that is what you want to do go for it. My concern is the long term availability of these rifles through the CMP. I believe some rifles came in recently from Turkey but after the Philippine rifles are gone who knows. Only so many in the world.

Long ago, you had to join a CMP afiliated shooting club, plus complete a full range day class and 90 round firing session. The price of the rifle was $140. My wife went through the course a little later, and it was $160, and a 60 course of fire. 1983-84? Those days, or at least the club were had to join were serious about complete the full course of fire. I had a rather worn that kept jamming and breaking, and was required to fire 'an alibi round' to complete the round count. I set the club record that day for Off Hand as I was really good at that, and I believe I used one of the club members personal rifle on that section of the firing. There were lots of people, especially the women, who barely made it through the recoil of the 30-06. One woman fire most of her rounds into the ground about 10 ft in front of her position.

My dad got his for a hundred bucks 😮from the cmp back in the day he just had to shoot a hundred rounds from a m1carbine its a Springfield armory version with a beautiful stock the quality compared to a Winchester is unmatched the Winchester has a very rough finish you can tell it was forged and the Springfield receiver looks like it was milled it feels like it’s on bearings when you charge the operating rod compared to the Winchester feels very rough even properly greased and oiled.

I was lucky that I stopped by my local shop and they had a m1 for sale. Granted I went there right as theyre opening but I managed to grab a Oct 1942 rifle for about $1100. Granted the stock has been sanded and the weapon was post war refinished ( barrel is a from 50 but the rifling is in great shape) but I consider that to be one of my better finds. Did I mention this happened in the last week?

Got my Springfield in 2019 from CMP. December ‘40. Wood doesn’t match lots of dings and I love every one of them, each has a story to tell! At 100 yds shoots a a 4” to 6” group. With out s as doubt the coolest firearm I own. I paid $600 for the rack grade. Wouldn’t sell it for $20 grade. Oldest son and his will enjoy it as well!

I got a Service grade maybe 4 years ago and a Rack grade a couple years ago, both H&R and '56/'57 respectively. Even though the Service grade looks better and shoots slightly better the Rack grade is my favorite of the two; maybe 1&2" @ 100 using 150gr Winchester SXP SP ammo.

My collecting endeavors quickly outgrew the CMP. Also, there are many who think that the CMP should be a military veteran’s charity or they think that the criteria is too cumbersome/stringent/complicated/unnecessary. …and there are those who proclaim, “I don’t do paperwork!”.

I just bought one at an auction near me. I’ve been on the hunt for one for forever, only reason I didn’t go CMP is I wanted a ww2 receiver and only rack (didn’t want to take a chance) and expert, which was slightly out of my 13 yr old budget at the moment. I got the one at my auction for $1400. It’s got an original walnut stock, 1943 SA receiver, and it was rebuilt by Letterkenny and is national match marked. Went to pick up a clip for it the next day and the dude at the pawn shop liked me so much he went down $200 and I got a almost brand new 91/30 mosin, still some cosmoline and the bayonet, for $300. Being a young gun collector has perks 😂

My dad bought one in '86 or '87 for $165. Only paid for the least expensive grade but because he had so much trouble with the paper work he got a much higher graded gun with a Win receiver. I think that's what happened anyway. Still the nicest, cleanest Garand I've ever seen, and very accurate.

Got a decent M1 with a hell of a story and a good bore for $1,200 from RTI a couple years ago. I think it was fair. I have nothing against the cmp but im not a member of an affiliated club. I'm also in Massachusetts, so it would probably have to go through an FFL anyway given our unconstitutional registration requirement.

considering they were making them during the Korean war some of them are my age LOL. I wish I had parts that were interchangeable for hundreds of years we will be able to rebuild. the CMP is the place to go. make sure to get new springs and potentially a gas plug and then you can shoot anything. they used to shoot 172 grain out of it in the military. just be careful.

The Army issued me one on those 1943 “ Cornbinders” for a sniper rifle in 1977 at a nuclear weapons site. It wasn’t much of a sniper gun with a side mounted weaver scope. Trigger was ok but not much better than my M16 really . It had one very nice curly maple stock on it though. I always swore that if I really had to use it that I would use the irons .

Got a nice 500k serial number Springfield with original Feb-Mar 1942 barrel, black walnut stock, in great shape and a 1.3 million # winchester, beautiful blonde birch (i think) stock with a worn out 1953 barrel i had fulton armory rebarrel to .308, both better shooters than I am. Cost me about $400 each shipped direct from CMP back in the 2000s…

Got a safe full of rifles from the CMP. M1903, M1903A3, M1917, M1 Garands & M1 Carbines. They've come a long way since you could get 1 M1 Garand for $99 thirty years ago. I hear they very much want to get out of the rifle business. Their coffers are full. Overflowing. And selling rifles is a distraction from their overall mission of marksmanship training

Last time I was there, they had a youth air gun competition. I’m not sure if they really wanted out of the rifle business… seems like they make a good amount of money through selling rifles and surplus. They just got the Phillipine returns back in 2017 or so.

Where I live you have to be careful because a lot of the VFW’s are getting rid of their Garands and most of them have not been well cared for.

I know a Reenactor who would borrow them for reenactments and living history events. Said he always had to clean them real good because they just never maintained them well.

Buy from CMP, your support for the CMP helps a lot. RTI M1's are way over priced. I have been a Competitive Shooter for 27 years and have shot M1's at Camp Perry National Matches. The Garand Collectors Association is another outstanding organization.

Well what if you don't shoot at a club? Which is one of the requirements in order to buy a M1 through the CMP. Than that means some of us is excluded from buying from the CMP in the first place.

You don’t have to be part of a shooting club. Other organizations or affiliated programs are listed on their website: Congressionally chartered veterans’ organizations such as the VFW, AL, DAV, MCL, etc. U.S. Military services (active or reserves) National Guard, to include retirees Professional 501(c)3 law enforcement organizations and associations such as the FOP, NAPO, NSA, etc. The Garand Collector’s Association is a CMP -Affiliated Club. You can download a Garand Collector’s Association Application Form or by visiting the GCA website.- !GCA is by far one of the most popular choices! Go see their website for more details or give them a call.

Good question. The answer is no, but only because you can’t have a membership through the CMP. You would have to be a part of an affiliated organization like the Garand Collectors Association (GCA) and meet other requirements to purchase from them. You may be able to go to the TMP store and browse but last time I went to the CMP South Store, they wanted to verify folks had met the requirements before entering the store. I got my M1 5 years ago for $250. At a local gun store. Almost mint condition on stock. I was told it wasn’t original. The stock they said was from 1945 other parts are from 1939 I think they said. But I have no way to know how to confirm it. Shoots like a champ.

I wasn’t convinced the CMP was legit. I did some checking and decided to send a package to the CMP. I had a fantastic experience the whole way through. I now have a beautiful M1 Garand. The process is not difficult at all and I had my rifle about 2 weeks from when they received my paperwork.

Glad it worked out yeah at first I couldn’t really believe it. I had a few friends that got them from them and I did some online research and it looked like I was missing out big time!

These go for two grand locally and more at my local gun shows there seems to be a lot of them we’re I live. I have a buddy who has one he got it from his buddy who claims he got it from the cmp. It was a matching numbers international harvester . I don’t think he went there and picked it out or anything so i guess what I’m asking is was he just super lucky or do you actually have a chance at getting a good one when ordering online or by mail?I seen and shot the rifle so I know the markings are international harvester. It looks like I was never issued could it be a fake? Or can you pay more to pick higher grades? I just always wondered if this dudes story lined up that’s the only part I could never verify.

For the most part, if you do a mail order for a Garand, you get a really nice one depending on grade. Even some of the rack grades have looked pretty decent. I have not mail ordered one but I have seen forums and Facebook posts about people getting them throughout the years.

@@BattlefieldCurator can I ask you one more question. Mostly cause I can’t find the answer on google and it’s bugged me for years. It was marked intentional harvester but it said like 1943 on the receiver behind the rear sight but according to what I seen online they didn’t make them untill the 50s. Could it have been someone putting fake date on it Or could international harvester be using old World War II parts? It’s always bugged me why it had those markings I know the guy claimed to have got it through the cmp.

I bought a CMP Expert grade for $2600 some guy bought it from the CMP and flip it at a gun store. I still think it was worth the buy for a high price.

it's all about the barrel numbers. it's all in the tag if you go to the store. remember you can buy a brand new stock for $165 bucks. if you're looking for a hard-working rifle that's the place to get one. remember it's all about the barrel everything else you can buy online.

It is “Ger-and” not “Guh-rand”. Cmp prices actually do not reflect market price for the rifles. $1200 +/- is an avg market price for a decent, even mixmaster M1. So be it, if others aren’t willing to adhere to CMP documentation criteria. They are not a charity nor a regular retail store.

For me, it's the annoyance of needing to join some sort of marksmanship competition. I shoot damn near every day. I've had a .22 in my hands since the day I was born. I am relatively confident I can shoot better than 90% of gun owners with a rifle. A pistol, no. I need practice and lots of it, I'll freely admit. I don't have much time, and I'm not the magical age of 60, nor do I live in a state that requires a CCL to carry. I'm not going to go out of my way to prove I'm competent to the CMP.

I just got my CMP Expert Grade last month for $1150. I'm active duty so I just sent a copy of my military ID and presto: straight to my door. Ended up with a 1942 Springfield that looks like a brand new gun. It's sad that greedy people are buying 8 a year and flipping them for twice what they paid. That was never the intention of the CMP. I honestly think they should limit it to 1 or 2 per year or maybe 8 for a lifetime... One day the CMP will run out and then the price of Garands will really skyrocket... When that happens a lot of these guys who have bought like 30 are going to make a killing on gunbroker and younger and less affluent enthusiasts will be unable to own Garands.

Nice! I’m sure the expert grade looked great 💯 yea it is sad that they are getting flipped, but I also think that is because not many buyers know about the CMP and don’t realize they are getting ripped off.

@gt5971 Most people hate scalpers. I'm sure if some millionaire bought all the tickets to a concert or event you wanted to attend and then tried reselling the tickets for 3x what they paid, you'd probably be pissed. Especially if you suddenly couldn't afford it at the new price. And I'm not the only one who feels that way. The CMP should just up their prices to match the going rate if that's the case, at least then the money will go to funding Youth Marksmanship rather that a-holes like you who are lazy and just trying to make a quick buck at everybody's expense.

@gt5971 But your analogy doesn't make sense. If somebody went to the Ford dealership and bought all the mustangs and then tried to resell them for 3x times the price, that would be scalping. That's what I have an issue with. Just about everybody would have an issue with that. Apparently, except for you. I don't have an issue with the dealership making a profit. I just wouldn't pay 3 times the MSRP for a car because some d-bag decided to clean out the dealership and flip all the cars. The beauty of capitalism is that I don't have to like it or participate in it if I don't want to. Here's how we can resolve this: Go buy your Garands on gunbroker for $2-3k, and I'll get my from the CMP for $1150 or less ... How about that?

Yep, Garands are rare here in Canada I got a Springfield M1 Garand 1943, 30-06 as a birthday gift from my wife, paid $4000 Canadian in May of 2022 and it was purchased at a firearms retailer. I call it the historical tax lol if you want the original manufacturer (Springfield) & in 30-06 you pay that unfortunate price, all the other Garand’s I’ve seen in .308 go for around $1900-2800 price point. but hey all in all, I’m a proud owner of it and enjoy every bit of it. Ps. I wish we had a cmp

I'm glad RTI brought them in and sold most in original condition. Mine is awesome. Shoots great, has battle scars and finish wear, but that old war horse has some history to it.

The BAR1918A2 was placed in a squad support weapon or light machine gun role. It wasn’t the primary standard issue rifle.

CMP sells JUNK M1s, if they even have any. I bought a 1955 Springfield Armory M1 Garand in 30-06 never issued in 99% condition from Collectors Firearms in 2017 when I had a FFL03 for $1525 with a Veteran Discount and free shipping to my home. It was only test fired and has the DoD acceptance cartouche. I had to zero the rifle. The only thing I added to it was a new gas port for modern ammo.

I’ve seen some really good M1s at the CMP. I would definitely say that the Philippine returns are not in the best condition though and those make up a good portion of what they have currently. The others are returns from Denmark and Turkey. They also get some from veterans organizations.

join the garand collectors association, fill out the paperwork with a copy of your LTC. takes about half an hour, and a M1 will be ar your door in a week.

Yea, but I’m sure they make a decent amount of money from having a higher limit. A TMP range safety officer once told me that folks who come and buy Garands is what helps them keep their jobs

That’s probably why no one talks about them. The CMP makes the CMP Special, with is surplus reciever and parts with a new barrel and new stock. Those are under 1k
