When it comes to wastegate spring sizing you typically want to put in a size that is 60 percent of your target boost pressure that way when the tuner is adjusting your boost pressure it requires a larger percentage of duty cycle giving him better control. I.e. you don't want to add 5 percent and boost pressure rise 7 psi you want to add 20 percent and get 7 psi. Remember the tuner can double whatever the spring pressure is in the Wastegate.

When choosing a spring pressure, is it logical to add your desired boost to the exhaust pressure to get desired boost when you're bench checking, otherwise have the exhaust pressure blow your wastegate off the seat prematurely?

18mm diameter gives you 9*9/3,14=254,34 area external 38 diameter 19*19/3,14=1133,54 which is 400% more except that you are spot on.nice job.

@chrisdeli7547
@chrisdeli7547 3 жыл бұрын
@@Smeedia thats the formula and this the reason why you need to calculate many factors when you change from internal to external since the gap is huge and the responce time of the external does not allow you to maintain the desired boost level stable cause external have more inertia since it is heavier. nice video again keep on the nice job.

Doesn't the blow off valve do the same thing if you keep 25lbs springs if the turbo went past wouldn't the extra just bleed off when the spring opens up thus eliminating a need for a waste gate?.
@mattmorrison6958

A wastegate will lower turbo shaft speed, and controlling boost with a BOV leak will raise shaft speed at the same boost level. Not saying there aren't instances to do it, but not ideal for regular old boost control

6:00 just for clarity, RPMs per minute is redundant because RPM stands for revolutions per minute Basically you were saying revolutions per minute per minute

Are different downpipes necessary for different wastegates?
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 3 жыл бұрын
Not really, the wastegate goes before the turbo. Only time a downpipe would change is if your routing the wastegate back into the downpipe

Can you explain the different sounds of a ewg? The 2015+ wrx with wastegates sounds like a two tone note but on some STI’s they have a one time note. How do I get the two tone note on a sti with a wastegate? I hear some sti with different size wastegates but some sound different. Is the the tune or the spring rates that affect the sound of it?
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 3 жыл бұрын
Wastegates size, Boost controller, the tune. For the 2915+ they use two wastegates where the STI only uses one. The dump tube also can play a factor 🙏😁

When is a good time to get a EWG? If my subaru is still stock, i would assume I wouldn't have to do it till i get more power flowing, right?
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 3 жыл бұрын
Once you jump to a larger turbo would be the ideal time 🙏

Thanks for the content! I do have one question... Is it possible/is it a good idea to run an EWG without swapping out the intake manifold? I was thinking of running IAG UELH, Up pipe, and EWG on a 93 tune with DP, TMIC, Intake, and fueling upgrades. Open to opinions...
@Smeedia

Totally fine to do that with the stock intake manifold 🙏

I’ve been watching a lot of your videos on how to make the sti 300-500 hp and in one video you said if you put a catless down pipe I would need a EWG to minimize boost creep? Would I be able to use that on a 2018 sti stock turbo?
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you could, but no one can really tune for catless anymore

How much boost can a stock wrx handle with an intake, should I be running low wastegate? I hit 18-20 on normal wategate

Tanner, do I NEED a ewg. Living in the pnw makes me wonder cause of the weather. I currently have a stage 2 2020 sti. I want to add fuel pump injectors stumble kit and a intake should I add ewg to the list ?

Are you going to be using a Catted or catless downpipe? 👀

So do I not need a 3 port boost controller with a ewg. Just trying to get the most out of stock turbo/motor on e85 for now until I build it down the road. (13 sti)

I already have a Tial 44mm external wastegate and my tuner told me that my wastegate is too big. Can I ask him just to adjust it with springs? Rather than buying another turbo with internal wastegate?
