How Dickens presents the theme of redemption in this extract as a whole? (30 marks) Thesis: Dickens presents redemption as a way that Scrooge changed for the better. Dickens also states the Poor Law Society, and how Industrial Revolution took over the society, especially towards relationships and how that leads to personal isolation. Paragraph 1: Dickens present’s redemption as a whole by stating the Poor Law society. Dickens wants rich readers to read the novella and find the key hidden messages within it and how Scrooge treats the working class ‘Decrease the surplus population’ this harsh criticism of Scrooges behaviour towards the poor suggests that they should die or go to workhouses. This portrays Malthus theory which suggests that the human population increases so much faster than food crops until war, diseases and viruses kill large amounts of people. This makes the readers feel that the Poor law was unfair for the Poor because even though the government was going to feed them, and clothe them it wasn’t that simple because they wanted them to work hard labour in a workhouse and they had to wear uniform, as well as having bread and watery soup every day and they ignored their basic hygienic needs. Paragraph 2: Redemption is also magnified by the presentation of industrial revelation which took over the whole society. In Stave 3 of a Christmas Carol the ghost of Christmas present showed Scrooge 2 children, ‘This boy is ignorance and this girl is want’ this portrays that the 2 children are mans society and its their responsibility to educate young children especially young boys because if they don’t they will end up in bad situations for example committing crimes and becoming violent. Dickens father was in jail because he had not paid debt and was in jail for that so Dickens had to work in a workhouse at a young age instead of being educated. This makes the readers feel hope for scrooge to change his ways to make a better society. Paragraph 3: Redemption is magnified in different ways such as personal relationships. In stave 2 the ghost of Christmas past took scrooge to his childhood where he was engaged to Belle however if didn’t end up being a happy marriage it ended up being scrooge left abandoned with no one all because of Scrooges likeness towards Money more than Love so Belle left him. This portrays that scrooge was left neglected all of his childhood and had no one to go to and this foreshadows on what he’s like as an older self. This makes the readers feel empathy towards scrooge because he was isolated all his life and was neglected by friends and family. Conclusion: Overall, Dickens message was if Scrooge can change and redeem his ways then the rich can change their ways and make the society as a whole again. Is it okay if someone can give me next steps and successes within this essay as I have my lit exam tomorrow morning ❤ Also, can u give my a score out of 30 thanks

I have a good quote for Christmas carol redemption “ I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel , I am as merry as a schoolboy”. This statement that is uttered by Ebonizer Scrooge give us a sense of joy of his redemption and that it’s almost as if he has a newfound of happiness and lightness. The Anology of dickens comparing him as a feather could perhaps advocate scrooges escape from what his life was like as a child and that he feels liberated and doesn’t have no burden on his shoulders weighing him down and that’s why dickens uses the simile as light as a feather “ . Can someone grade this for me plz

Hi I really like your videos and find them really resourceful and easy to understand unlike many other GCSE English lit videos, I was wondering if you would ever do videos on Jekyll and Hyde?

4:08-4:17 Technically it could be argued that this wasn't the case as Marley is surprised when Scrooge is able to see him (at least i think this is the case from what i can remember)
