Welcome to the twenty-third video in my "'A Christmas Carol' GCSE English Literature Revision" series! In this video, I focus on the theme of Wealth and Poverty and how Dickens uses it in his story.
In order to focus on the theme of Wealth and Poverty in Dickens's classic tale, I first provide some super essential information about wealth inequality in the Victorian era, analyse MORE THAN TEN QUOTATIONS, and then also provide a summary, question for you to reflect on, further ideas for you to engage with, and some extra video and reading recommendations. You'll definitely want a pen and paper for this video, as there's loads of useful ideas that will help you with your revision.

this has helped me so much! I was also thinking about how the ghost of Christmas present revealed ignorance and want to scrooge could symbolise the way society tries to cover them up- because the ghost was hiding them under his robe

I think poverty as a positive was probably the most key message Dickens had to offer about the poor bc of his audience he would've needed to at the very least counteract their biased to send an effective message. That being said it might be a good idea to add timestamps in the comments or description either sectioning the video by topic/theme or by the quote being analysed bc otherwise the video is difficult to come back to for quick revision.

Thanks DystopianJunkie. This was in my GCSE EDUQAS exam. I revised and watched all your videos, and i’m grateful that this proved to be very helpful. I remembered like 8 and these quotes and supporting analysis. Keep the amazing videos up. Also have you ever considered doing an analysis series on Macbeth since lots of people study the test, which would be able to give you more views as well as helping more GCSE students.

Poverty in its positive connotation because it contrast the silly ideas the rich had for the poor people. The Crachit family show that being poor doesn’t necessarily mean that unhappiness is present. The contrast between both Scrooge and the Cratchits shows Scrooge is actually spiritually poor where as the Cratchits are spiritually rich.

The negative presentation of poverty is extremely important as it shows the negative affects that poor people Victorian England must experience as a result of the actions of wealthy upper and middle class. They hoarded excess money which could have been used to benefit the poor, allowing the poor to not have to steal or live in misery as a last result of survival. As the maids "sat grouped about their spoil" while witnessing this scrooge "viewed them with detestation and disgust " unaware that their actions were partly his doing due it his reluctance to give charity and being a miserly man. This would shed light onto the well of readers of the novel, would have been middle or higher class people , as they would have been able to buy and have the spare time to read the book. On what the consequences of their actions are on the rest of society. Dickens did this to counterargue the Malthusian theory which was suggested by Malthus that because the human population would grow faster than food supplies , the poor would get poorer and it was inevitable however Dickens argued that this would be unnecessary if the rich would just give some of their wealth away in the form of charity as it was nobles oblige and the right and Christian thing to do. I tried Sunday observance bill - negative presentation of wealth - 12:28

Heads up, this idea has actually long since been debunked, like it's already established in economics that Malthus was wrong. There's a longer explanation that you might want to search up but basically he got his maths wrong, he couldn't have predicted that technology to make food and resources would improve so much more or that better living conditions meant people had less kids since they only had more back then bc the kids were all dying so you had to have tons so a few of them would survive. He also couldn't have predicted birth control either. But today, we definitely have enough resources to feed everyone twice over at least. The problem today is not that there are too many people, the problem now is that very few people own everything, very few people have access to all of those resources.
