When is comes to urban legends, myths, or just misinformation beekeeping is loaded with them. I am honored to be able to collaborate again with the beekeeping KZfaq creator community and pull this compilation of some of these things you read or hear as a beekeeper that may not be as true as you think. Sit back and enjoy the perspectives of many beekeepers from across the US and Canada discuss their favorite myth or urban legend.
DISCLAMER : Some of these topics may be controversial and you may not agree with. We encourage a healthy conversation when sharing information and perspectives in the craft of beekeeping, however, we will not tolerate rude or disparaging comments about this video or any of its participants. Bro! This video was awesome. We’re in Philadelphia. I believed some of this stuff. As much as I love banana’s I wouldn’t eat one the day BEFORE working in the yard. How about bees not flying at night? I find that not to be true. I have winter berries blooming on the property near the hives and have found bees bouncing on them at 2am. We have 16 hives in an urban area each pull two to three deeps and one reached 4 last summer. So bees can also thrive in an urban environment if resources are well. 😊 Great video man!

Awesome 👏🏻 urban hives are fantastic. I do know bees can’t orient without the sun so yes they can fly but they will get lost quick and usually sit tight until sun comes up. The banana 🍌 myth is a classic

Candy boards? I don't recall any bees making candy boards to get themselves through winter, and they've been around for the past 120 million years or so. Humans turned up maybe 2 million years ago. How ignorant and presumptive of humans to think that bees need them, let alone their candy boards!!!

Been a fan of many beekeepers on YT for years now. This video was recommended to me and really loved it, as a matter of fact i don't think i made it 10 min in before i subscribed!!! Couldn't help but notice you have a Skep Beekeeping hive basket(?) not sure what it's called exactly, was wondering if this is something you have experience with or were planning on trying? there is a documentary I've watched several times on YT ( i think it's from the 70's) and ever since I watched it the first time I've been on the look out for a more modern series... Anyway, thank you for this great video you put together with some of my favorite bee keepers and many i look forward to learning about including you. First bee club meeting I was told there are no "feral" bees in this area. I live near Conway, AR. Is this a myth? Is there any info about where feral bees are located in the wild? Love Seeley's books. Great vid!
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees Жыл бұрын
It depends. Feral colonies are on the decline in some areas but increasing in others. Typically the more beekeeping colonies in that region there could also be an eventual increase in feral colonies. But what is defined as feral colony? researchers defined a “feral” colony to be an established swarm that already survived one or more winters without intervention prior to the study. But that is their definition for their defined study. I guess it’s all perspective I love Dr Seeley’s works also.

Almost thought you was going to say the smell of bananas doesn’t get airborne when the bees are pissed and ready to attack . I was ready to see that one go bad . One of things from Memphis bee keeper of first year hive honey crop . He must be in a exceptionally good nectar flow location . I’m located in North East Central Arkansas and. I’ve never been able to pull a full suer off a first year hive .

The banana 🍌 myth is an old one and I’ve never experienced a change in behavior in my bees from recent exposure to bananas 🍌. First year harvest is uncommon but can occur if there is a good enough nectar flow and the colony is strong.

@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees Жыл бұрын
Based on our observations we fed pollen Patties in the fall (high SHB timeframe) and saw very little or no SHB in the colonies where we used the peppermint encrusted patties. Not sure if it’s a function of the higher concentration of bees consuming the patty at that time or the peppermint was a true deterrent. We will keep testing.

@BohemiaBees

It’s not due to bears. The theory is that raccoons and possums who may frequent a hive entrance at night will have to expose their stomach when standing at the hive entrance and therefore hive bees a better defense. But honestly I have hives at various heights and never had a problem

I'm letting you know that I am unsubbing from your channel because you agree with bashing hobby beekeepers (comment on Jason Chrisman ) channel. I know that it probably doesn't matter to you but it does to me
@BohemiaBees
@BohemiaBees Жыл бұрын
?? I didn’t bash hobby beekeepers? I agreed that the term wasn’t appropriate to the level of dedication to keeping bees. I see many people who enter into the craft of beekeeping with little desire to want to actually keep bees and only are focused on it for the wrong reasons. They end up buying bees every year and wonder why they can’t grow a sustainable apiary. I am in no way the expert nor do I claim to be. I learn every min I’m in my bee yards. Why would you leverage a subscription to protest your misinterpretation of a position I take with those who are actually hurting the craft of beekeeping by not actually caring for their bees. Beekeeping isn’t a part time hobby like an ant farm. It takes dedication and good stewardship of your colonies to build a thriving apiary. I am sorry that you misunderstood my position but I feel strongly that while the word “hobby beekeeper” is just a term, the craft of beekeeping is more than just a hobby. I hope you reconsider after I was able to explain that position and continue to support those of us that are trying to build up the craft rather than allow 1000s of colonies die each year to people who are just “bee Havers” not “bee keepers”

Fred Dunn had his maths wrong here! He seems to think 1300 BC is 1300 years before now when it’s actually 3300 years ago. 1300 years before our calendar starts at year 1 plus the 2000 years since is 3300 years not 1300 King Tut wasn’t born in the 700s! If you are going to debunk maths on KZfaq you need to get it right yourself.

You are absolutely correct! Do not come to me for your math lessons. I will stick with honey in the future.
