Everytime Sugar Ray Leonard Got Knocked Down

All 6 times the great Sugar Ray Leonard touched the canvas. All the times he got knocked down was when he was past his best yet still taking challenges like fighting (and winning) the LHW title 33 pounds north of his prime fighting weight or rematching Tommy Hearns 8 years on in a more natural weight for Hearns.
He came back and won in both the Kevin Howard and Donny Lalonde fights. He drew with Hearns despite gettings downed twice and lost to Terry Norris.
There was a slip early in his career against Dick Eklund that Eklund bragged about being a knockdown and if you watched "The Fighter" you would have been led to believe he was knocked down by Eklund but as Eklund later admitted, it was nothing more than a slip.
Chapters:

00:15 1st Knockdown (Kevin Howard)
01:08 2nd Knockdown (Donny Lalonde)
02:03 3rd Knockdown (Thomas Hearns)
03:13 4th Knockdown (Thomas Hearns)
04:14 5th Knockdown (Terry Norris)

@@nicholasweaver7809 - I see what you mean Nick. I like Sugar Ray a lot and Hagler. They really were two of a kind in terms of their boxing ability. So many of these guys push on and what the fans remember is the lesser version in terms of the athlete forgetting of course these guys are only human after all. I’m glad Marvin walked away and I’m glad to have seen that era in that weight class as a young guy then. Boxing also has a way of spoiling things too. Many of these fights are put together when guys are a shell of themselves. Look at Mayweather v PAC. That’s another in a long line. DeLaHoya v Mayweather where Oscar was still good, but noticeably different. Tyson could’ve even see his prime looking in the rear view by the time he met Lewis. Mike should’ve retired in the late 90s. Ali was another long before that, and Foreman as unusual as his comeback was - he was exorcizing the ghosts in his head. Imagine if the second version of big George was a younger version? Wow. Then of course behind door number 1 is the corruption driven by greed. So many decisions were just wrong. The wrong end result not a issue of incompetence all the time, but one where corruption seeps into the judges decision. Chavez benefitted a number of times from the latter. Sweet Pea beat him easily and never got the credit. The mob controlled boxing in the 40s and 50s and likely to a lesser extent in the 60s but a lot of stuff stunk like nobody’s business when looking at some of these fights. The Ali trilogy with Norton -> Kenny was robbed in MSG. He should’ve won 2 of 3 but Ali was the favorite and cashed in on a early Xmas gift there.

Many fighters say Hagler hit with heavyweight power but the truth is Thomas Hearns hit harder than Hagler - even Leonard says Hearns hit much harder than them all including Hagler. It shows what amazing heart Leonard had to take Hagler's best shots and get up off the canvas from Hearn's deadly RIGHT HAND. Hearns only problem was his chin - imagine if he had the granite chin of Hagler. 😬IMO Leonard had it all - the agility, footwork, defense, SPEED, HEART, chin, charisma and power. 11/09/82-04/15/87, to be exact. First date is his "Retirement Party", which Hagler attended, expecting to hear when they would fight. What Hagler heard, was the infamous: "It'll never happen". Second date, is the actual date of their fight. If you include Hagler fighting "Fully Obel", 11days prior to Leonards "party", Hagler trained, fought 8 fights ( Duran,Hearns, Mugabi amongst them)for a total of 57 rounds. Plus he aged almost 4.5 years. Leonard fought Kevin Howard. Leonard and Mike Trainer ( Attorney / Advisor) were very shrewd in how they created Leonard's ( phony) aura of greatness. Waiting for opponents to age, ( Hearns waited 8 years) always demanding "catch weights, etc. Karma caught up with Leonard though much to my ,(and I'd guess yours?) delight in the form of the 18 rounds Norris, & Camacho pounded the G.OA.T all over the ring.

@@GeorgeFreeman55 The point isn't whether Leonard lost or won. He won v Hagler. He WAITED for Hagler to have 8 fights under his belt, 57? Rounds, PLUS training, and age 4 ++ years before he fought him. Wear & Tear. IMO, Leonard wanted NO part of an under 30 yo Hagler. I also realize Leonard fought 1.5 years ( Kevin Howard) AFTER "It'll never happen". Why not fight Hagler 6 months after that? IMO, Hagler hadn't sufficiently declined yet. Hearns had to wait 8 years for a rematch ,and THEN, @ a "catch weight", of 164. Why not fight Hearns, or LaLonde for that matter, @ their weight class. LaLonde, HAD to come in @168, ( even though he was a 175 Lber), or give up $$$. I also realize LaLonde couldn't get that kind of $$$ fighting anyone else. SUPPOSEDLY there was a 3'rd Hearns fight "proposed" but again, at a catch weight. Hearns wisely declined. Canelo Alvarez isn't a "natural" 175 Lber, but he fought Bivol, @ 175 Lb, and then moved down to 168, to fight GGG last weekend. Leonard DID fight Norris at his "natural weight 154, and got the crap kicked out of him. THEN, he wisely took on a blown up Camacho ( 130-168!!!), and really got his ass kicked!!!! FRAUD!!!

Terry Norris legitimately Defeated Leonard . Just the same way Leonard was given Credit for defeating a older version of Marvales Marvin Hagler. Leonard Obviously thought he could defeat Terrible Terry the same way Pernell Whitaker thought he could Defeat a younger Tito Trinidad in the late 90's . . Whitaker and Leonard Both tasted canvas against the Younger Lions . It was a passing of the torch in both fights and appropriately both Whitaker and Leonard vocally expressed their acknowledgment of the Younger Champions immediately after their fights with them . Pernel and Terry both Hall of Famers .

During his prime Sugar Ray Leonard was a master. He definitely had the speed and power. When boxers reach a certain age it is not the same. Terry Norris would not have come close had he fought a younger Leonard. In my opinion the Marvin Hagler fight should have been a draw. The 2nd fight against Tommy Hearns Leonard admitted he lost that fight. Retiring early due to his eye injury after the first fight with Tommy Hearns changed Ray’s vision ability. But even with the eye injury he came back and fought a hell of a fight and won. The 2nd fight I don’t think the same killer instinct and determination was there had he really followed up after staggering Hearns he would have won. Sugar Ray Leonard to me was definitely one of the greats. Those were real fights.

Totally agree, Nick. Leonard, from 1976-82, was the greatest welterweight I've ever seen. He was "Sugar Ray" Leonard. From 1983-91 he, battling unnatural weight increases, blindness and aging effects, became "Ray" Leonard. His mind was so brilliant, as a boxer, he could still beat naturally bigger men, but he wasn't the same. You don't even see the same drive and passion in face in these fights. He gets knocked down by dudes and it's like he's thinking..."well, just another night at the office..."

Guy who put video together isn't to bright. Left out the overblown lightweight Camacho knocked him down too. And he also stopped him in what 4 rounds! He was given a gift with Hagler. And he made Lalonde come down to 167 to fight for Lalondes 175lb belt. What kind of shit is that. Knocked down 7 times in 40 fights and has the nerve to steal sugar ray robinsons nickname. Robinson at 1 point was 121 and 1. Had 2 hundred fights!

Exactly. SRL always had to have things his way. In the Hagler fight he had to have 10 ounce gloves instead of 8 ounces. A smaller ring, and if course waiting to fight Hagler past his prime in a 12 round match. Hagler during his reign would have at the very least exhausted SRL in a 15 round match,

You are looking thru a stain glassed window. Go on you tube and watch Duran documentary. The man was unbeatable. He went into suger Ray bout at 61 and 1. He was feared in the ring. Fought like his life depended on it. The second Duran fight, was a set up for Suger. He had to have a bigger ring, and I believe lighter gloves. He just ran whole fight. Of course Duran should have never quit. The one giant mistake he made. I ran out of work, picked up my brother in law, bought a pint, and spent my last 40 dollars on pay for view at theater. Oh well.

The hot dogging was Ray playing to the crowd, Ray Leonard is a baby face pit bull in the ring. I agree 100%, Norris should’ve been disqualified, that was dirty and to a legend no less. It was disgraceful, it was kind of billed as the passing of the guard that night. So it’s possible Norris could’ve gotten away with anything. Those characteristics are likely why Norris (who had great talent) was only a flash in boxing history.
