Shout out to Kyle Bull out in Erie, PA who's a sick guitarist and is obsessed with tone as much as I am, if not MORE! He has an EVH 5150 III EL34 that he just modded by clipping the C137 capacitor which brings an entirely new tone and life to the blue channel!! After hearing his tone after he clipped it, I KNEW I had to do the same. I've known about this capacitor mod but was always reluctant to do it!! Until Kyle's video!! Kyle, you are the man and thank you so much!! Now, if YOU have an EVH 5150 III EL34 and HATE the blue channel, you NEED to do this!! It's literally a 10 minute job between unscrewing the chassis, pulling out the amp section, clipping the one single capacitor and putting it all back together. YOU are going to love the blue channel afterwards!! Thanks again to Kyle for sharing his mod and enjoy your new blue channel!!!

The C137 basically muffles the output and after it's cut, it's the original sound of the blue channel. It's so much better after it's been clipped and useable! Now I'll use the blue with the gain dialed back plus an OD in the front.

I use the KSR EROS to Boost the Blue channel of the Evh 5150III EL34 50w unmodded and it sounds absolutely killer, there is no reason to modd the amp at all and imo I don't understand why people do. I've heard plenty of clips modded and played the amp unmodded in person and the difference don't warrant modding the amp. if you are considering modding this amp people I would strongly urge you to have a tech put that C137 on a toggle switch in case you don't like the modd. imo I won't mod my amp as it sounds killer boosting the blue channel with a TS9, with a KSR Eros or Fortin 33 so I'm positive you will get your desired tone with any overdrive boosting the blue channel! Food for thought guys, I know tone is subjective and to each their own but I wanted people to know that the amp sounds killer boosting the blue channel with out that C137 modd

Thanks for explaining this mod. Great video! I'd really need to A/B a modded head against my stock one through the same cabinet in person to see if it's something I want to commit to. Having three distinct channels is part of the reason I bought this amp. Sounds like two red channels now. idk

The two channel are still very distinct between them but the blue is officially useable now. There are guys who are modding them with a toggle, so you can choose between the stock blue and the C137 clipped option. That way, you can decide. :) Hope that helps and happy Friday, Tim! :)

I have a schematic for the 6V6 but it looks to me like the preamps are different and there is no C137 I can find on that schematic. If I could find a schematic then I could design an A-B switch or better yet a "tone" circuit to allow a control of how "open" that cap connection is.

I honestly don't understand metal guitar players, the blue channel on this amp is amazing, it's literally a mix of a Soldano and a JCM800, you put an overdrive in front of it and it roars.... if you want a tight amp just buy an ENGL or buy the Stealth, the blue channel on the EL34 is NOT made for modern metal shit, doing this MOD literally defeats the purpose of the amp and makes it sound like the other fucking version of the same amp that many of you already own. It's like breaking up with your blonde GF, then you start dating a redhead and ask her to dye her hair blonde.

It's like my Mesa, I LOVE the Dual Rectifier and some guys think I'm crazy bc they hate them. I love the EL34 with the C137 capacitor cut. It's literally perfect for the tone that I think best represents the C# Standard tuning I use. :)

@@louistorres like I said, the blue channel on this amp is not made for modern metal, it’s voiced based on Eddie’s brown tone, and I’m sorry but if ppl can’t hear that I guess they’re tone deaf.. There are multiple videos on KZfaq of non metal guitar players nailing Eddie’s tone on the blue channel, or playing 80s stuff like Zakk and Sykes (which is also what I normally play). I heard guys like Kyle ( love his channel btw) saying that the blue channel doesn’t sound like a cranked British amp and that makes me wonder if he ever listened to Van Halen once in his life.. but like you said it’s about taste, I love rectifiers as well and to me ppl that can’t get a good sound out of them literally don’t know how to dial in an amp or they’re trying to make it sound like a Marshall and that’s not gonna happen because it’s NOT a Marshall.

@@guitarlair I've read that the point for some people to use this mod is to use the blue channel as their main high gain channel instead of using the red because the red channel has too much unwanted noise. THIS x1000!!! I concur. However, with that said there is an amp tech that plays plays a Tele then some "metal" guitars through one after clipping it and he makes it sound ABSOLUTELY KILLER for both classic rock and metal. Look him up RubberDuckTech (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iKphY6p8mazTn40.html) here on YT! I've bought and sold two (too much unusable gain) EVH 5150iii's now and just bought a third (EL34 this time) just because of his video and I WANT LESS GAIN in my blue ch. No disrespect but, gain is like "sugar crack" for the metal kids. They just keep heaping and pouring it on like sugar until you can't tell what the hell you're eating anymore (or in this case can't tell good tone from bad). When you have THAT much gain you lose touch responsiveness and articulation. You also lose dynamics. I know because I used to do the same. But, as my guitar playing matured my technique improved as I used less and less gain.

Why not just get the all black Stealth 6L6 version? The whole point of the EL34 head was to be Different and go back to the old Marshall tones from Eddie's first amps. Now it just sounds the same as the 6L6 head. You now literally have 2 high gain channels. This Blue channel is supposed to be less gained out than any 6L6 version bc it's British crunch sounding. Then the red channel picks up where the blue left off and goes into higher and over the top gain.

Does the 100 w EL34s already modded or you could perform the same c137 mod to the 100w also?

I just bought a new Kemper Stage and Peavey 6505+ head! I'm tapped for the year! :) Maybe 2021 when they finally start to go onto the used market for $500! :)

Hopefully you could borrow one at least cause they revised the blue channel and just sounds so good. Also Hasty told me about the new profiling business you dudes are doing. I found out cause I watched Josh Middleton talk about profiling and I messaged Hasty and told him he should start doing it. Lol

I found it to be too tight compared to my el34. I disliked it for what I do. It lose a lot of the over all movement.

I think the blue sounds than the red with or with out the mod . I think Lou is confusing gain with tone

The Blue channel is voiced like an old awful Ampeg from the 70s. I'm not confused, I just know what a good amp should sound like. After clipping the C137 it is now usable, that's why I kept it.
