It's not just NYC, it's the whole United States. My family and I live in a small town in southern Minnesota - population 2,000 including the cows and corn. My husband and I are retired. Unfortunately, we made some poor decisions with our money. Long story short, 3 years ago, our son, his wife and now our grandbaby and us bought a house together. All of us are owners. The kids have the entire upstairs 3 bedrooms and a bath. My husband and I have the downstairs bedroom, living room, dining room. We share a common kitchen and laundry/bathroom. We pay the utilities and 1/2 the mortgage. The kids pay the other 1/2 of the mortgage. This arrangement isn't for everyone, but it works for us. We paid $110,000 for the house. In the 3 years we've been here, rent/mortgage has gone up. Right now, our home is worth $350,000. Something needs to be done. As a nation, there are more homeless people than ever, the cost of living is astronomical and none of this is sustainable.

Yeah, well, take some advice from an ex-New Yorker. I was evicted at the beginning of the pandemic when my job went bye-bye, but before the moratorium was in place. I was already living in an illegal apartment. I lived in my car for two months in the midst of the pandemic, so no showers at the gym, no bathroom, shelters? No way! I became nocturnal to keep my car and stay under the radar. Took cat naps by day in different places. I escaped by night on tertiary roads--remember when they were stopping people at state lines? The closest major city to me is now Quebec City but I’m in the USA. I’m a resident caretaker in a one room cabin at a rustic camp. I don’t pay rent; I maintain the premises, keep a register of hikers, canoers, hunters overnighting on the land, remotely monitor two wildlife cameras for a conservationist. Other than occasional tutoring, sewing repairs, making assorted crafts to sell in summer, I consider myself retired.

I live in a boring Midwest city. That being said, I pay nine hundred and fifteen dollars a month for a mortgage on a big house built in the 1880s. I saw my rent getting increased every year and decided to work on my credit and save money. I worked at the local grocery store during the pandemic and paid my rent every month. My neighbors laughed at me because they were sitting home doing nothing and collecting more money than I was working through the pandemic. I got the last laugh because now they are paying MORE to rent the crappy apartment than I am for my mortgage. I am also now a manager at the grocery store and am saving up for a pool. 😂

Oh, heck, no! You all stay the h-e-dbl toothpicks where you are and effing fix this. They flee the Northeast for the Southeast and absolutely blow up property prices so locals can't afford a place to start a family; they move away instaed of building a local economy. Those who fled here do not build the local economy. And they sure are bossy. 'We' need this and 'we' need that and 'we' need to do this/that the way 'we' do it in NY or CT or RI or MA or wherever. Yet look at all the free assistance and protective rules and etc. So easy to see that free stuff in the city drives up the cost of everything. Bonus: they have no clue they do it to themselves.

Cash, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your new "hard news, honestly" content--and how heartbroken I am to see what is happening to my hometown, where I was born, lived for many years, and started a family of my own. We left NYC after the pandemic because I had PTSD and couldn't handle the commute from Queens to the city anymore. I pray for my friends and family back home, who are struggling and wondering what they should do. It's too easy for those who don't have a connection to NYC to say they should leave. If you've lived there, you know. I'm grateful to you for being unbiased and showing the world what's happening and explaining why, and I hope there's an online award of some kind like an Emmy--you sure deserve it.

The rent for that apartment was $6495 a MONTH, which is just about $78,000 a year. That is absolutely insane! What if it was a family, not a roommate situation? And after that year the only thing you've got to show for paying ALL THAT MONEY is a new lease contract that is raising the rent. People are already working 2 or 3 jobs just to have a place to live, because most rental properties don't cover utilities. Not only is all of this unaffordable, but it's also extremely unreasonable !

I don't think anyone wants to live with roommates, but if you're just starting out in life, unless you're rich, it's pretty normal to get a room in a shared apartment or house. I can tell you from personal experience, the lack of privacy as well depending on others to do their part is a nightmare. I actually lost friends over it. I'm glad I got the experience though because now, the only roommates I will ever have again is my wife and kids.

Absolutely, I get where you're coming from and I'm with you on this. Yet, there's another angle to consider-irresponsibility with money is all too common. Many prioritize splurging on fancy clothes and weekend outings over essential expenses like rent. Having lived in New York City, I've seen firsthand how some manipulate the shelter system to benefit from rent programs. It's a complex issue, indeed. Just something to ponder.

Making minimum wage is now $16 an hr. Gross pay and Pay are is a main reason evicts are so high NYC. Your weekly gross pay is $640 ($2,560 monthly), but net pay is $320 (1,240 monthly) Only $1240 a month to pay rent, buy food, and utilities. Currently, rentals in buildings classified as Affordable Housing starts at $1500 for a studio. Also, since your gross pay is used by social services when applying for assistance, you will not qualify for any rental assistance until you become homeless. SSI and SSA recipients are also being evicted because their cash benefits are just enough to cover current rent, but annual rent increases/renewals are now higher than their current cash benefits.

In California- I always paid rent on time for 4 years. Landlord game me “no fault eviction notice” and never provided relocation assistance, not even last month rent excuse. When I demanded to fulfill them their legal obligation, landlord further broke lease agreement which allowed me to have a roomate on lease. Landlord evicted my roommate and raised my rent to 5 times in 1 month. Then when I could not pay that much for 20 days, landlord filed an eviction case, had an expensive attorney and won damages, eviction and got awarded everything landlord asked. Myself, being suffering from severe public anxiety, had to present my case myself as no city or non profit helped me saying they are too overwhelmed with cases. I spoke to judge and felt like I was talking to a wall. The entire system cheated me out to streets. And now I have an eviction on my record and cannot rent elsewhere since I have irregular low income. This system is actively punishing being poor.

Great video, Cash: Here is the problem with a lease where the landlord/Leasor expects everyone else to pickup the bill and penalizes the tenants who pay their full rent, if one roommate can't pay. While I'm not a lawyer, I did do some research on rental contracts and what constitutes a notice to quit on a rental agreement. If a group of tenants chooses to rent a rental and all choose to sublease, usually each sublease is an individual lease and not a group lease. Since a sublease is an individual promise to pay, only the tenant subleasing is responsible for his or her own share of the rent and no other tenants share, of the rent. As long as the tenants are paying their share of the agreed upon rent, in full the landlord/Leasor can't shift the rent amounts owed by one tenant to everyone else in the group, nor can they evict the group without just cause. A sublease is a single lease, for a room and shared kitchen, bathroom and housing privileges. As long as the subleasor abides by the rules and pays their rent on time, a landlord/leasor has no grounds to evict them. A sublease should never be written to make the other subleasors responsible for a subleasor who can't pay their rent and it is the landlords/leasing companies' job to bring in tenants to the property and not the subleasor's job. Never sign a sublease set up to force you to pay the other subleasors' rent, if they can't pay. It is very illegal and unethical for any landlord/leasing company to force other subleasors to be responsible for another subleasors' rent within a group of subleasors renting together on individual subleasing contracts.-Happy trails😀

Sad but true. No museum, theatre, restaurant - whatever that city markets itself on - is worth the misery that living in NY has become. I fled years ago and for a while thought about going back but never ever. With technology the city will continue to lose population and stature. Charlotte is second to NY when it comes to banking and comes with a much more livable lifestyle. Other cities are learning how to compete with the Big Crapple. Really said. I was born in Manhattan and lived there much of my life. Only to see it whither on the vine - mostly at the hands of liberals like DiBlasio, Adams and the big one in Albany - Kathy Woke-Ill.

NYC resident here since birth. Besides the obvious reason that people simply can no longer afford to live here many are making the deliberate choice to break their leases and move away. They are deliberately not paying rent to save until they get evicted, all the while they are saving to use the money to move somewhere else. They aren't doing this to get over on anyone and I am reserving my judgments because they are simply doing this to escape the indentured servitude that is their reality here in NY. I eat one meal a day and spent almost 20 dollars at Mcdonalds the other day for just myself (one large chicken sandwich meal with a value menu mcdouble). It's nuts.

All of our resources are going towards people who aren't even citizens. I'm only second generation on one side and third on the other so it would be hypocritical of me to be against wide-spread legal immigration but New York did the equivalent of inviting 100 people over for dinner when we only have two pizzas to share. Our economy already had massive issues pre-2008 financial crisis (nevermind covid), this burden was one we literally couldn't shoulder. We are all going to be broke together now.

Another messed up part of this and a direct cause of people leaving are employers refusing to pay people what they are worth knowing if they leave the positions salary would be much higher anyway. Our receptionist used to make 51K (it's an entry level job, we're not looking for lifelong receptionists/assistants). Our old one moved back to Ohio to move in with her family and we are paying the new one 61K . I'm 100% sure if we paid her ever 58K saving us 3K a year she would have stayed. The whole system is borderline collapsing.

However a ton of landlords want you to pay as much as possible for rent and will lease their apartment to the candidate who can pay the most every month out of the rest. So it’s pretty much a rental auction which is on the rise in some parts but is luckily illegal in quite a few places.
