to be fair, in my uni there was a d&d group that had only 2 members on like 3rd year who were just sitting around painting the figures bought with uni's money bc they couldn't even play, and then my year rolled in and the guy from my group took over and now the club has over 20 members from different courses and years

As someone who has had the high school experience of my teacher dad showing up as my substitute with no prior warning, it's accurate that the dad immediately reveals to everyone that his kid's in the class. My dad also felt the need to announce it to everyone. Nothing too over-the-top embarassing, but he did try to slide in some Boomer jokes throughout the lesson (like about men not asking for directions and such) that the class didn't respond to at all. It wasn't as much of a surprise because he taught at that school regularly, but he never really had the chance to embarass me in front of my peers because we had different schedules and teachers are too over-worked to spend too much time mooning over their teen kids. I did overhear some random kids saying that he was "crazy" once, but I just found it funny more than anything.

Everyone know the real pain of dnd is having a group of friends who want to play but no one wants to DM. Or scheduling lol.

Has anyone ever in their life seen someone come in to introduce the substitute teacher for your class?? I have been both a teacher AND a substitute and I've never seen this but it happens in every single video/tv show/movie. Is there really no way to convey to the audience that there's a sub other than someone just saying "hey everyone the teacher is sick so here's someone who is not the usual teacher"?

The thing with the dad is that for my schools I've gone to, you need a teacher to supervise every club. We have a dnd club and that's supervised by a teacher, so it REALLY wouldn't be weird for the dad to participate in the club

Its so crazy seeing how D&D is still perceived to some as such a nerdy and outcasted thing. When I was in high school our D&D club was massive with maybe like 50 to 60 people come and play every week. Granted I had people I knew who wanted to come but felt embarrassed in doing so which is a shame because the times they had played they really enjoyed it.

I never knew the lack of context, the neglect of basic DND spell research, and the weird approach to the game can cause the word "wand" to become actually uncomfortable

I actually DM for a party of 8 people, figured I’d pop in and mention that doing world building is one of my favorite parts! I love just getting a random idea for like, a god or something, and just immediately message my co-dm and add it to our ever growing lore document. Will the players ever meet this god? No. Does that stop me? Also no. And as for map making, I actually have players who are into that kinda thing and just do that for me, which makes my life easier. But anyways, you mentioned jokingly that it seemed like homework, but from my perspective, it’s a lot more like working on a fun personal project of mine! I doubt this actually matters or anyone cares, but I thought I’d throw in my two cents as a DM :)

My nieces be clowning on me for no reason and it's honestly not that hard to deflect and to also realize that they're just all talk. From the perspective of an adult, you realize that most kids just speak without a filter. The stuff they say really holds no weight because they don't think about what they're saying before they say it. I mean, I used to think people picked on me a lot for no reason, but if I remove myself from myself as a child, I was annoying and I also was one of the kids who just said whatever without thinking. A lot of people don't realize they might have been the bully when they were kids and that's why you'll see a lot of anti-bullying adults be one of the mean kids from school.

It's so funny to me that Dhar Mann is picking on D&D as nerdy in this video; I have actual kids (not 20+ year olds) in this age range and D&D is having a huuuuge resurgence thanks to Stranger Things. A D&D club just started this year at the middle school and so many kids showed up (and have stayed on) that they have I think five or six different campaigns going to accommodate everyone, plus they pick up new kids pretty regularly. Also, fun fact, my middle kiddo is one of the DMs and she wears a Hobbit cape/cloak to school every time they have D&D club, lol. I'm told everyone thinks it's awesome, including teachers and kids that aren't in the club. :D

Also why do people always think everyone dresses up for d&d? 💀 I've dressed up twice for d&d, once because we had a one shot where mine and my friend's characters got married and we thought it would be fun to dress up a little. And the other time was when (after part of our group's characters got stuck in a hell dimension where our clothes got changed to weird outfits) we had one player photoshop cowboy hats onto all our character tokens for us without our DM knowing and we all showed up to the session wearing cowboy hats, and our DM was very confused. Both of these instances were from games played online. It would get old pretty fast if I dressed up every week for d&d lol.

I had a US History professor who dressed up for every Tuesday class (it was an online hybrid class). She was 30 and had *quality* 🤌 outfits. It was “Civil War Era to Present.” So she dressed in a gorgeous flapper dress one week, and the next she was dressed as a trench-coat-wearing, hair-tucked-into-hat, jangling-change-in-a-mug, Depression Era beggar. She wanted us to really get into the times. She used a little cosmetic “dirt” to distress her coat and face for a few grimier decades. She didn’t go to Party City; she had real garments. She entered from “offstage” when class started (either the top of the stairs at the back or at the bottom of the auditorium). It seemed effective. In my Texas History class, I saw a guy several rows in front of me open 6 Snapchat videos that his buddy sent him from a strip club. At 10 a.m. That professor complimented my note taking (before a movie) and gave me a signed copy of her book she published that year called “Slow Takes A Long Time” (about her ongoing journey and lessons with her adopted and mentally disabled son)

The dad is kind of cringe at the school, but that could be because it broke professionalism a bit by outing that the kid is his son without at least a heads up for the kid. I'm also a sub at my brother's high school, and even before going, I said, "in the off chance I am your sub, what do you want me to do?" And we had a mature conversation that he'd be the one to initiate the reveal that I'm his older sister, so he can have a level of control over the situation.
