Phill is wrong. Loni opened the LA Production and then replaced Patti’s replacement (Derin Atlay) in the Broadway Production.

@@fergusmurray1828 I recall in Patti's book, she opened LA prior to Broadway with mixed reviews, then to Broadway with mixed reviews again but it became a hit show so when they opened the LA/National Tour with Loni Ackerman, she complained she got nothing but rave reviews riding on Patti's coattail success. Was Patti a victim of bias or was she exaggerating the reviews? She also seemed paranoid about her alternate/understudy undermining her.

@@fergusmurray1828 Maybe Loni Ackerman was better or even liked more by the creative team, but Patti was the best one available when the production came from UK & Loni wasn't in the earlier auditions to give her competition or even the Equity politics of rejecting Elaine Paige's transfer to US may have plagued Patti's casting as 2nd choice. By her own admission, Patti struggled with the role & she purposely fought to do the opposite of what Elaine had done in London including holding the arms differently during "Don't Cry.....", a small difference, but she likes ranting about it all the time like it was a genius gesture that Elaine didn't consider. She didn't want to be a carbon copy of Elaine, but that's the business of Broadway & Hal was recreating the London success, not a new version of it.... Patti was technically a replacement to original Elaine when Patti wanted to claim that "original" for her resume. It also frustrates me when actors say they created the role on 1st tour - 23nd tour or in the bus & truck company or in Hoboken, clearly actors' marketing version of "brand new & improved, with 10% more soap." Replacements can be better than the original or just plain more cooperative is enough to earn favor from the director like Loni may have done; Hal is allowed to favor one over the other who might have been pissy about recreating the same moves done by original Elaine; I understand Patti's paranoia at the time, but she nabbed the role first in US & went on to a stellar career bc of it; I just don't understand her recent bitterness towards other performers which IMHO sours her own legacy & may explain why she now has that permanent sneer on her upper lip.

Patti digs into the character and brings that acting into the vocals. She has guts and a "take not prisoners" approach to this (and many other) roles. I think this "gutsy"-ness is what makes her stand out from all the others.

No, sorry. I downloaded the London cast recording specifically for this compilation but I'm guessing it was a highlights album, it did not have this song.
