Probably because of RAM limitations, so they didn’t have custom sleeping animations until Melee

I noticed that, in the first Smash game, all the characters slept standing. This is unnatural for humans (though not for horses and certain other creatures) and looks weird, so I'm glad they changed that for Melee.

If you see Sonic, in Brawl he was sooo expresive, in Sm4sh looks like the character model it's broke because his spikes and eyes doesn't even move when wakes up, and in Ultimate that was fixed .

15:27 Meta Knight’s (and King Dedede’s) animations are pretty rare since, they never sleep in the Kirby canon through gameplay. Since Kirby can Copy the Sleep ability from touching an esssence, but helpers (or other characters) go straight through them.

You can't blame it It was made during the early days of gaming. That was of course when graphics and animation for 64 were still being worked out. That's why it has terrible animation and graphics.
