At 46 years old, I grew up with episodes IV, V and VI and saw them in the theaters during their original release. Due to it's direct connection with those three original movies, Rogue 1 has a special place in my heart. Seeing the Hammerhead ram the star destroyer was quite possibly the best scene in any Star Wars movie.

I find the duality of the hammer design rather interesting. It was civilization ship during peace time, but also a war ship during conflicts. Just like a hammer could be used to create or destroy.
@igncom1
@igncom1 4 жыл бұрын
I've always though that these ships were always updated to keep them up-to-date with modern technology, it's just their general shape never changed. Like if we had a modern Greek trireme with a CIWS anti-missile system in place of an archer tower and proper motor engines to replace or support the oars.
@castlebarron1788
@castlebarron1788 4 жыл бұрын
George White I agree but also it’s a bit of a stretch because even if you give it modern propulsion steel hull all the modern equipment and gizmos the ship would be very much not the towering shii of the line it once was as nowadays you need a vessel around 2 times or more that same length to project any amount of actually callable offensive or defensive power nowadays a modern trireme would be treated more like a costal patrol boat in size and function considering the size limits that would need to be accounted for on modern armament and operating standards. In short while it may be as modernized as could be but put one against a modern corvette and it would get its ass kicked 9/10 times with the small chance that the enemy dicks up and leaves an opening
@castlebarron1788

And this is what I think happened to the hammer head and other ships
@igncom1
@igncom1 4 жыл бұрын
@@castlebarron1788 Yeah with how naval warfare has changed, with ramming and boarding being rare these days, such a modern ship wouldn't be too great. The style of warfare in starwars changed, albeit slowly, as well where the sheer amount of guns and fighters that these ships can carry, even if modernized, is nothing when compared to equally sized or smaller 'modern' designs.

Arguably the Star Hawk could fit in as an extension of the hammerhead design philosophy, heavily armoured foreword section and powerful tractor beam arrays capable of shoving around Executor class Star Destroyers. It isn't a direct descendant of the originals but it does evoke the same kind of silhouette, something the New Republic may have wanted in order to connect itself to the Old Republic.

The Thranta class Cruiser is actually considerably larger than the Hammerhead. Anyone who plays Swtor and KOTOR would immediately identify interiors being drastically different. The Hammerhead cruiser only had a light compliment of fighters where the thranta had a full hanger of fighters and bombers, the bridge in the thranta is also 3x or more the size of the bridge as seen in the Endar Spire. I honestly don’t know where or how some people think the sizing is reversed.

I kind of like how the forward ship design "forces" captains to be brave. With a narrow front profile, reinforced front structures, and heavily armored (& armed) front, turning & running away will likely get you killed. (by exposing your more vulnerable flank & rear to the enemy) So, you either plunge forward into battle and maybe survive, OR you turn and flee, and probably die.

I think the Hammerhead is a decent design, but the star destroyer is the more efficient design. The star destroyer's wedge shape means all guns can be brought to bear on targets directly in front of it, and 50% of its firepower can be brought to bear on any one side. This is what I refer to as the "wall of guns" principle; that is, virtually everything you see and can hit is a gun pointed at you, and is the most efficient way of concentrating firepower. The downside, of course, is that it had very little firepower to the rear, but given Imperial fleets were generally expected to have superior numbers this was far less of an issue than one might think.

For the Old I believe it happened because they believed the Sith were defeated so didn't need a military. As for the New the main reason was the Empire was beaten so didn't need one the reason for this came from 2 arguments one being cost that if they were at peace why waste the credits, the other was it reminded to much of the Empire so a lot felt they shouldn't centralize the military but allow planets to fend for themselves. Although a secret reason was members of the First Order were able to enter the New Republic and wanted demilitarization so when they attacked it would be easier for them.

also historically look at america pre-WWII, most of the time the US's military was somewhat of a skeleton crew, demilitarizing due to cost of a standing military. The Old and New Republic demilitarized due to costs more than likely.

Wat? 180 metres? Only 2 turbo lasers? 1500 crew? 2700x passengers? That's an excellently designed ship, it just needs more weapons!
