At the risk of an obvious necro post, the GR-75 reminds me of the armed merchant cruisers of World War 2. While useless in combat against dedicated warships, they still played a vital role. Famously, HMS Rawalpindi battled the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in a hopeless 1v2 battle, despite having been given the offer of surrender. This brave but futile resistance spooked the Germans and derailed their mission, convincing them to move to safety rather than risk getting caught by the British home fleet, which they assumed must be close-by to justify such hopeless defiance. Later in the war, The German heavy cruiser Admiral Scheer hit the jackpot: a convoy of 37 merchant ships taking desperately needed supplies to Britain. Their only escort was the unarmored, barely-armed merchant cruiser HMS Jervis Bay. Unfortunately for the Germans, Jervis Bay wasn't having any of it and charged the pocket battleship despite having no hope of victory. While consigning herself to the depths, her belligerence stalled the German raider long enough for the merchant convey she was guarding to scatter into the night. In both cases the Germans scored tactical victories, but strategic losses. And the morale impact can't be underestimated. Now just imagine you jump into battle in your shiny new Imperial Star Destroyer and your enemy is willing to go up against you in a freakin' GR-75 with a couple turbolasers duct-taped to the side. Sure, you know you're going to win that battle, but there's no glory in it, and if they're willing to fight a battle *that* hopeless, you know that nothing you do will break the enemy's spirit. And they still pose a serious threat to Tie fighters and other light vessels. If nothing else, you still have to dedicate a certain amount of firepower to destroy them. War is a terrible thing, and we must never glorify needless death, nor endorse the idea of solving our problems with violence. But sadly, we humans are all too human. And in this particular case, I think it's important to recognize that armed merchant cruisers aren't pointless just because they're tactically ineffective. Quite the contrary, whether in the real-world cases like HMS Rawalpindi and HMS Jervis Bay, or the GR-75 from a galaxy far, far away, the armed merchant cruiser is the symbol of a movement that is desperate, but willing to do whatever it takes, willing to face impossible odds, willing to sacrifice everything.

They definitely needed to release this all at once. Maybe it could have helped avoid at least some of the hate leveled at the show (if it does really turn around). But as it stands now it isn’t good at all. The story, the dialog, and acting isn’t great.

As someone who is not very knowledgeable about weaponry can anyone tell me what is the difference between a blaster and a gun. What is a laser cannon vs an ion cannon. Etc... or can someone point me to where I might find this information about the Looking for canon Star Wars-centric information. Thank you.

Alan, I have nothing but tremendous respect for you and your content, but I cannot understand why you’re being such an apologist for this horrible series. Ignore the culture war nonsense. This show is poorly written, poorly directed, poorly paced, relies on generic tropes, poorly developed characters that the audience simply doesn’t care about because the writers have done nothing to make is care about them and ultimately this series is just fucking boring. While you’re right that this is the weakest episode so far, they’ve all been weak and they’ve gotten progressively worse week-to-week. The physical sets were beautiful? As a buddy of mine in the industry said, “What did they do… raid the greens section of the property department?” Please stop blaming us for Disney-Lucasfilm’s continued terrible choices, please stop gaslighting those of us with legitimate criticisms of the show and please stop gatekeeping (“True fans of Star Wars?” Really?). This episode was like a poorly made fan film where they spend 90% of it walking in the woods because the script is so poor that they have nothing to fill it with. That’s not our fault.

The poor dialogue in this show has been sticking out so much for me. It's such a shame that media lately has been dumbing itself down so much to make the show understandable for the lowest common denominator of viewer, half watching the show and half watching their phone.

Do you think maybe the inconsistency with Yord's character is that he has the toxic boyfriend trait. He has feelings but wants to prove he has grown into someone she would respect, and then wants to take the blaster so she will be more reliant on him and he can be the protector. And maybe the actor had Anakin on the brain as Yord eventually feels betrayed by some choice Osha makes and attacks Osha

Very honest and balanced review. I think it’s fair. It’s also disappointing that this episode is a bit clunky. Have you seen Damien Walter’s critique over on Science Fiction KZfaq channel? He says that Acolyte is good (episodes 1 to 3) and that it’s aimed at 12 year olds primarily. The toxic criticism by some KZfaqr’s is way over the top, but hate builds engagement for them.

SO I love this show so far but this episode was... badly directed. You can tell where the VFX team take over the shots and salvage it and where a decent director should have gotten more out of the actors. I mean you literally have Daphne Keen and you can barely get her to emote. However, I do agree with you on the culture wars - it's basically used to sell a product and thats it. Those KZfaqrs that do this clearly sell other products and cause the culture wars rabble. Like you, I love Star Wars and for what it is. I love the lore, I like the culture and the world building. This show has challenged a lot of things associated with it - like taking children from their families at an early age and training them as child soldiers. Because they're the good guys they shouldn't get a pass.

Just to let you know, the term immaculate conception has nothing to do with the birth of Christ. This is a very common mistake for that term. Christ’s birth is actually referred to as a virgin birth. The term immaculate conception in reference to the conception of Christ’s mother Mary. It meant that she was conceived without the stain of original sin on her soul. In the Catholic religion, and probably a great deal of other Christian denominations, the idea was that ever since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden all humans are born with the stain of original sin on their soul. The sacrament of Baptism is supposed to remove that stain. But in order for the mother of the Christ child to be the appropriate vessel for his birth, she was specifically exempted from this and conceived immaculately without that stain. I don’t mean to offend anybody by saying that a woman needed it to be the appropriate “vessel” for carrying a child. I’m simply using the terminology that would be used in this religious context. Saying that Christ was born through immaculate conception is used so commonly, that even though it is incorrect, it is what most people think that terminology means. But having been brought up in the Catholic religion, I always cringe a little bit whenever I hear it said. Not because of any religious sensibility, but because I hate the fact that this mis-usage is so common that hardly anybody actually knows the correct meaning. And my pedantic nature has a problem with that. I hope you don’t mind this little correction!🙂

I'm thinking that Stenberg seemed to act better as Osha then Mae because she was terrible as Mae, rather than actually being a good osha. The last episode she done a bit better as Mae, which means the comparison wasn't as clear, showing the weakness of acting in both Mae and Osha. I'm not sure if this 100% weak acting, or if terrible writing and character profiles is a leading factor

Well, a lot of Jedi used multiple forms or switched throughout their lives. Obi-wan started with Form 4 but switched the 3 after Qui Gon's Death but was still proficient in the form after (Obi wan has also been shown to use form 2 against Dooku and form 5 against Maul and Savage Oppress during the clone wars). Ahsoka also started with form 4 which she transitioned into form 5 which she learned from Anakin.

Taking the show at face value (ignoring the lore), it’s not good, tho it’s not the worst I’ve seen from Star Wars. Like ep 1 and 2 were overall good, but had some moments that I didn’t like (fire in space comes to mind). However episode 3 writing was pretty abysmal and was only made tolerable when Sol was on screen. Then episode 4 comes along and says “hold my beer” and delivers some of the worst writing of the series, to the point that not even the actors could salvage it. Like you said, Mae’s 180 just seems to come out of nowhere and Osha is convinced to continue with one sentence from Sol. And don’t get me started on how the Jedi charge the Sith (tho they might’ve figured that it was a random shmuck with a red lightsaber 🙄). At this point, the only way to save the series (imo) is to just have it be filled action sequences (in which the choreography has been fantastic), more diverse settings, and more screen time with Lee Jung-jae. I might watch ep 5, but after that I’m probably gonna tune out of the series, which is sad because I had high hopes after the first two episodes.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to care for this series. It isn't like an "i don't like it" thing, but more of an "I have no emotional connection to the characters or the story." The writing feels really weird too. Like they lost pages of the script and we just have to figure out what should have been there in order to make sense of it. (Perhaps this is an editing issue, with connective tissue being left out of the final edit.) That unnecessary scene between Osha and Jecky could have actually meant something if they had developed their friendship earlier and stuck to them saying their goodbyes. But rendering it moot by immediately giving her an unearned change of heart felt really amateurish. There are just certain things that feel unexplained at best, or unplanned at worst. Like the Jedi having such authority that they can test any child, anywhere, even in systems outside their jurisdiction? A simple line of dialogue explaining that they had tracked the coven, that they had a report from within the coven, something? Sometimes the show feels like lazy, underdeveloped fan fiction. I had high hopes for an Old Republic story; for something disconnected from the tiresome Skywalker saga. But so far, this is very disappointing.
