John Deere 110 to the 140 to the 318 to the X700 series machines. Hopefully I got all my years correct as I was talking. I caught a couple small things as I was editing the videos together.

I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. kzfaq.infoUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

Excellent video. For all of my younger years I used Fords and Cub Cadets. The one tractor I always wanted was a 420 JD. Fast forward a number of years and I now have a first year and last year model 420. You brought up some things I had not heard of. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of them.

My dads old 332 had a Yanmar 3 cyl Diesel it was like a 1988 or 1989! It would pull a 22' Bayliner Ciera that weighed around 5K lbs while riding a wheelie, he had to use the independent braking for the rear wheels to turn! His had the tiller, plow and a modified front end loader!

I own a later date John Deere 400 with an original Cozy Cab, hydraulic plow, snowblower, 60inch deck, 3 point hitch, wheel weights. Just had the hydro completely rebuilt by Jims Repair in Minnesota. Kohler has now 1196 hours and running strong. I bought the tractor from a guy and I swear he acted like he was selling his first born child. He absolutely loved that tractor but arthritis in his hands kept him from using the hand throttle so he bought a 445 with a foot throttle. He watched me drive away with that tractor on my trailer down the road probably with tears in his eyes. I probably with never sell this as now I am under the John Deere 400 spell. Its a mean looking tractor and I absolutely love it. Currently looking for a model 20 loader for it. Anyway thanks for the video I really enjoyed it.

I can't say I blame the old guy! I have a 1991 318 with the cement (inside plastic) wheel weights with the 50" right side discharge mower deck and a 1989 Simplicity Sunstar with the 60" deck left side discharge mower deck. I also have a 1977 Sears that was a 16 HP Onan, but one piston fell into 3 pieces shortly after I bought it, so I replaced it with another 18 HP Onan and the tractor came with a huge snowblower. I also have 4 Wheelhorse's. 1975 B-80 with 8 HP Kohler, 3F/1R, no mower deck, and the rest are from 1971: 800 Commander Special with 8 HP Briggs & Stratton (belt drive electric starter), 3F/1R, 36" rear discharge mower deck, Charger 10 Automatic (hydrostat) with 10 HP Kohler, hydrostat, 42" right side discharge mower deck, and last was my uncle's Raider 10 with 10 HP Tecumseh, 3F/1R and Hi/Low range to have 6F/2R gears, 42" right side discharge mower deck. The odd ball mower deck to me is the Simplicity Sunstar's left side discharge mower deck. Although I suppose to some degree that rear discharge is a little different.

I bought a 455 with 120 hrs. on it about 8 years ago and now it has 402 hrs on it. It has been a great machine. The only problem was a relay had to be replaced. It burns 1/2 the fuel a gas burner uses. It still looks like a new machine. I change oil and filter every 50 hrs and grease it twice a year.

Great video, you seem to be quite knowledgeable. I recently purchased three of the 200 series at auction. None of them run but Lord willing, they will. I have never seen the 200 side by side with the 300 but I am certain the 200's are bigger than the 110. The frames are heavy gauge steel and they are rated to pull a plow so they have to be rugged. I suspect the 200's fall in between your 110 and 318. Two of mine are strictly mechanical and one has hydraulic lift for the mower deck, but no deck lol. Can't wait to hear them run. It would be a shame to have them crushed and recycled. Too many folks today are comfortable with the throw it away mentality.

I have a 165 Hydro that I've been keeping alive by wrenching it every time something breaks or dies. Bought it in 1998 and it was used and quite old then. Not sure what year it is but Ive had it 20 years. Just replaces a fuel pump last fall, a battery is needed this year. Yesterday it stopped moving FWD or REV. I peeked under, no broken belt or fallen deck or loosened blade in the turf. Nothing obvious. But Ill look again thoroughly after home from church. Love it but dont know the history. GREAT VIDEO!!!

I didn't think I'd invest in a John Deere since was planning on a Ford Jacobson LGT or something older garden tractor, though found a 240 for $40 and seems decent and worth restoring along with some customizing. Kind of aligns with the Ford Gilson YT16/18 where I'll leave that electronic actuated and controlled projects... the Ford 240/320 I'll use as the hydraulics learning platform for implements and maybe drive eventually. Thinking the stock geared transaxle is better for now.
@ericnorris8704
@ericnorris8704 3 жыл бұрын
@@jafinch78 now just the newer john deeres are trash, but I have a 1980(I believe) JD 318 gt and it is an absolute awesome machine amd if you can find one for around 300-600 that runs an hydraulics work I'd snatch it up if your looking for a garden tractor to use it cant be beat, I have a plow and a homemade "wrecker" attachment that allows me to pick up an pull around mowers primarily but I've used it to pull golf carts, trailers and even cars. It is my absolute favorite tractor and it's a beast. But the old fords are good as well just can be a bit expensive.and the 240's can be great if you find a good one or build it back yourself.
@jafinch78
@jafinch78 3 жыл бұрын
@@ericnorris8704 Yeah the Ford's I have (Gilson's) are 1980's and not the older tube frames... though other than the transaxles, built tough and still working and being upgraded to be garden tractors and not yard tractors (YT). The one I wound up getting for free just had an axle shaft broke off plus came with 80lb ea. wheel weights and a 46" mower deck. The other was $40 with no implements and came with whatever I could load into the pickup bed. Amazingly, the JD 240 was $40 though no engine, hood, implements and seat cushion and the steering column was bent with a cracked dash. Already painted blue so perfect to be modified and hacked out into a Ford 320 SVT. The implements are about impossible to find for the YT's I'm figuring, so planning to custom mount the JD subframes for the blade and snowthrower to the YT in time if easy, otherwise will custom fabricate subframe assemblies so I can still use the same implements between the two makes and models... at least that's the plan. Otherwise for the YT's I'll fabricate to be as close to stock as I can. Was thinking the 240's were still good quality still since early 90's and compared to the newer I've seen... I just pass on since wasn't the plan and is ridiculous pricing for like Craftsman or Poulan Pro's from the 90''s-00's riding lawn mowers like not even quality.

@@jafinch78 cool yea I fix and sell tons of the craftsman an mtd mowers and they can be great for mowing or pulling a garden cart but other than that they are more like a toy compared to real garden an yard Tractors. But I love how simple and tough the older machines are my 318 has been used every year since new and maintained properly and it'll probably go for ever if kept up. An its that way with alot of the older well built stuff. Ive seen mtd mowers literally wear themselves into pieces after only a decade or so an my 318 is over 40 years old and has all the original main components. Its a shame that they switched from building them to last to building them for profit.

Very nice video! My first Deere is a 2006 L155C, 25hp (purchased about a week or two after my thumbnail picture was taken). It's still going strong and I've used it year round from grass cutting to hauling to snow plowing. Six days ago I purchased a new X758, 24 hp diesel w/ 60" HC mower deck. I've added the bigger 54" snow blade (but I'm going to add the 18" extensions & bring it to 72") and a rear electric broadcast deicer. Basically my 155C on steroids. I wanted a bit more UMPH!! Again, your video was really interesting. You know your stuff and it was well done.

i owned at one time a 112 sq fender. they are a decent machine. i ended up selling it and i got into IH cub cadets. the X700 series might very well be a nice machine, i have never ran one. i think what it is very sad it what has happened to the cub cadet brand. i have a 1961 IH built original cub cadet. it is 55 years old, and in fact has the same engine as your 110. its still a very usable machine. it has a very solid, rust free 38" timed deck which i just installed new bearings. the K161 still runs strong as new. MTD took the brand from a really solid garden tractor to a POS lawn tractor marketed as a garden tractor. cub cadet no longer makes a garden tractor. their "top of the line" machine cannot even handle a single bottom plow. the cub cadet of 55 years ago is a more versatile and far better built machine then what they offer today. it has a real frame and a farmall cub transmission. a modern cub cadet is a peice of crap and they slap that name on junk some of it with Chinese made engines. SHAME on you MTD from taking cub cadet from its roots of a quality little workhorse to a throw-away peice of crap come to think of it, today deere is probably the only company that still makes a real garden tractor. they are not cheap but you get what you pay for. if you want a cub cadet buy an IH built machine or an early MTD built machine. stay away from the crap they build now. if someone gave me one i would sell it to the highest bidder as soon as possible. is ingersol still around? wheelhorse, gone..... cub cadet, bolens, troy built are MTD junk

Great Vijao! People compare the regular lawn tractors to the farm tractors and say their junk and have a lot of plastic. I work at Home Depot and the John Deere lawn tractor's are not comparable to the garden tractors. Neither is the price!!! I'd like to see all these garden tractors pulling a small sled, (without hurting them), and see how they stand up against each other. I always thought that the hydrostatic tractors were weaker.

No mention of the yanmar powered diesel 332... referred too as the 318 on steroids! The thing was a beast! Ran one from the day they hit the market. The only reasons we trade it in was the release of a John Deere 4100 in 1999 with the same 3-cylinder Diesel from Yanmar but in a 20 horsepower version front end loader and four wheel drive it was worth trade-in but I still miss that 332

Thanks! The transaxles from the 425 all the way up through the current X700's have been of very similar design and can almost be used interchangeably. The numbering system is odd though. The transaxles in the 425-455 was the K91, the the 2002-2012 X units had the K92, then the K90 was installed in the 2013- X700's. Why that numbering systems was used I have not idea. I figured they would have made it the K93....

Have a 1988 JD 265 with 1100 hours, still running strong! Use it to mow about 3 acres, plus the tiller for 5000 sq.ft garden. Eyeballing the x700's, but can't justify the cost with the 265 still working just fine. Would like a bigger deck than the 46", but making do. Might go with the x590 eventually, as it's a few grand cheaper. If I was doing more than just tilling, the x700's or the 1025 would be more feasible. Wouldn't mind the disk and cultivator attachments!

Well ... it would seem from your video I've made a colossal and expensive screw up ... As I type, my 318 is in the hydraulics shop having lines and hoses installed for a custom front loader I built from new raw materials to emulate the JD 120R Loader on the 1024R tractors.It came out looking really great however, after many inquiries rather the hydrostatic pump in the 318 would operate a loader and getting just as many conflicting answers, I bit the bullet and sent it to the hydraulics shop for hose fittings and lines tapped into the forward hydraulic lines for the plow. Now, after watching this video and learning the 318 will require a separate pump, I'm faced with the problem of finding out just what pump I'm going to need and just how is it to be driven and what I'm going to do with the new hoses they've already made up and tapped into the front lines! Lord only knows, I'd dearly appreciate any information and advice you could give me to salvage this potential disaster ...

To me the greatest evolution they came up with that they a boned was the VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE that they had. You still had a Very Heavy Duty Cast Iron conventional transmission that would not burn out or start slipping as with hydrostatics or automatics, and yet you could quickly slow the tractor down if your got into some heavy grass and once you got out of it you could just as quickly speed back up without changing throttle position of stopping to change gears. All the benefits of the tractors of newer style without worry of transmission problems. These were great models for those who wanted to mow, plow snow or blow snow. If you need the ability for hydraulics yes then it probably isn't the way to go but if your main thing was to mow I think it was the best design of tractor that they ever made for the money!

I am 14 and like working on older mowers and just picked up a John Deere 332 that has not ran in a few years i got it home replaced Diesel and fired right up. All I want to is why people want the 332's so much and why everyone think that the 332's are one of the best garden tractors. Don't get me wrong I love my 332 and will never sell it but why do people pay outrageous prices for those mower. And if you don't know that is okay just wanted to so I could get more knowledge about these mowers.

I was running my John Deere 180 today. After I shut it down, like normal, to help my worker do something, upon returning to it,, it started fine, but the transmission would not engage when I let out the clutch. It seems as if there is a safety switch or something stopping the clutch from disengaging. Have you encountered that with your JD 180, and if so, what do I do to get it to roll under power again??? The break and clutch have been locking up on me, which happened just before I shut down the unit to help my worker. Did that do something to cause this condition??? Great video...

my 64 110 has a cast axle so maybe early 64's had a 63 type axle? nice presentation; the GC is really looking sharp in this video man! you need to experience a 400, they are NICE the power steering is like a Cadillac car yea its a bastard to find attachments for but JD sells a quick hitch to let new stuff mount on the front.

Seems you may be able to answer my questions about the John Deer .. if you don’t mind me asking ‼️ I have a X485 and doing a complete deck rebuild. I’m finished now but having trouble getting the bolt off the deck wheel height “ leveling “ adjustable rod “ if you will “ bar . I have new replacement wheels and the barrel bolt that wheel rides on are wasted. I used heat but with no luck ? Are the adjusters repaired? My new wheels have new barrels to bolt to adjusters ! Just can’t get old ones off the height adjusters ! Thank You, How do you get them off

My 318 was working perfect. But I cut it off before stopping Mower blades. Now engine will not start. It acts locked the electric Switch will not let me push it down in to stop blades. Is awitch defective . Battery full charge. But motor won't turn over I thing it a safety factor with cutoff to blades. Thank u

That is an unusual problem. Normally they will fire right back up after the switch has been turned out. Opposite to what most think, it is rare for the PTO switch to just go bad. I would say give a peek at the fuses and other switches.

If you were to separate the different tractors into different model generations, with all of the models made, what would that look like? Love the video though. You are the only person that I can find that gets even remotely close to listing model generations. You've also listed more models than anyone else I could find out there too. Keep up the good work.

What is the best of those older jhon Deeres what one has got the most features
@mmrbeef
@mmrbeef 2 жыл бұрын
What era are you looking at 1970's? 1980's 1990's? For an older unit with features I would recommend the 445 or 455. If you step back to the 420/318 era you loose features but save some money depending on the machine.

Same here, 318 has 1320+hrs (dead meter), and 332 has 2020hrs. Just lost the alternator on her (which took out belt and voltage regulator/rectifier). LOVE the 332, but 318 is a great (and useful) backup.

nice job on your presentation. I have a john deere 430 and it would go between the 318 and the 455 then the 748. You are correct in that the 748 is a super garden tractor as well as my 430. I'm debating if my next tractor should be a 748 or 1025 which is a sub-compact. Anyway very nice john deere garden tractor history lesson.

+bobbert368 Thanks, I wish I had the space for a 430. Had one a few years ago and loved it. I would have bought a new 1 series had it not been for the environment I operate the X748, space is at a premium. Not having a FEL on the new X758's meant I either had to go used on a X748 or a new 1 series. Glad you liked the video.

i was wondering how hard is it to find a rear pto for a 430 and a 3 point kit cause i found a nice 430 cause paying 10 to 15k for a graden tractor is kind of out there for me
@mmrbeef
@mmrbeef 8 жыл бұрын
Interestingly garden gractors really have not increased in price when you account for inflation. In 1991 a 430 with deck was pushing $10,000. A rear PTO is going to be a 2000 rpm PTO and generally you can find them on eBay, just not cheap. A 3 pt can be purchased new from www.rueggmfg.com/hitchkits.php Hope that helps

agree with you on most things. my gripe is the plastic hoods. most used over a few years have broken or missing hoods. the plastic dries out and the hoods crack and break. i call johd dear the hoodless tractors. if you do not believe me i can show the proof. other than plastic i love them.

Oh I understand about the plastic.... particularly from the late 1990's and early 2000's. I think they are getting better now.

Just a comment on the missing x500 series in this line up. I Guess I should have known the difference between lawn tractors and garden tractors. Bought a x380 to replace my old JD 265 which has been a beast. The 380 is way too weak and flimsy for my yard so I upgraded to an x570. Big MISTAKE. The 570 is only a 380 rebadged. The front axle assembly on the 300 series is pretty weak and the JD put it on the 570. According to specs the 570 is supposed to have stronger transaxle but I have my doubts now. I wanted to upgrade to an x580 but I had already used the John Deere promise to return the x380 and spent an extra $1500.Do your research. Be aware of the fine details

Wrong generation X500 series...he is talking about the 2002-2005 X575/X585/X595 super garden tractors that preceded the X700 series. They hold a place in the lineup because they were the first series to offer 4WD.

318’s have fiberglass hoods. Most Deere garden tractors (emphasis on garden tractors) until the early 1990’s had fiber glass hoods.

Way Back when , they had all metal EVERYTHING lawn tractors ! What I’ve recently invested in is a 98 GT275 . Runs good, paid $400 ! What’s sad is the previous owner ran into something and destroyed the hood ( stuff happens ) ! A Replacement 3 piece hood Is the better part of $600+ ! Damn the person that decided to go plastics , UGH !
