Geez. Took a minute for it to sink in. Frost Boat Yard.I was a little kid but my Dad knew one of them. I really enjoyed this. I'm stuck in Florida and unbelievably homesick for Maine. Will get back as soon. Thank you!

Loved my old boat representing the backmans. Jr, built that one. He was my great uncle. I remember when he started the DLA and me and dad joined right up. The backmans are about gone now I think. :(

“Orca” The boat from Jaws was a Novi Cape islander converted originally from when it was called the warlock. I don’t know who the builder was but it was used in 1974 for the filming of Jaws.

John Gardner documents to some degree how the hard chined downeast lobster boats came into being from the 1930's onward. This was in his last book in 1995 called Wooden Boats to Build and Use.

I think John's Bay built a wooden boat for I guy I was renovating a couple homes for on Greening Island at Southwest Harbor back in the late 80's. It was a beautiful lobster style boat but decked out inside, powered with a Volvo IB. It was never to be used as a lobster boat when this guy owned it except for the few traps I pulled. I thought he paid to much @ $200k but she was something special that is for sure.

I own a Osmond Beal designed boat built by H&H. Owned one wooden boat before that built on Orrs Island. The hulls built today wood or fiberglass as lobster/ fishing boats are capable, seaworthy, money making vessels. I love mine. Thank you to all the builders, designers and finishers for these vessel and also the ones that unfortunately have passed, I am partial to Beals Island designs just wished I could met Osmond Paul J. I lived on a boat in the 70s-80s that was built in '46 at the Sample yard in Boothbay. While it had more cabin space and headroom, it had lines similar to some of these boats. It was built for a family named Bradley, and they were tall.

I own Otto Backman's boat, built by him in 1955. Great boat, and Otto's grandson Danny Backman built one on Otto's molds, which is now lobstering in Winter Harbor. I'm happy to provide a photo to the Museum if you'd like.

This is a great video. I’m passionate about lobster boats, and learning their history is a highlight in the experience. As the evolution goes, here in 2017, we’re seeing lobster ships, more than boats. (That’s not as much of an exaggeration as it seems.). I’m starting to see 44’+ Calvin Beal boats and the like in the MidCoast area. Beasts, both powerful, and fast.

I'm sorry but when ever I see these kinds of boats I instantly think of the Orca from the film Jaws since it was a modified version of this kind of vessel, 39 feet.
