But if like us you need a 2nd car as a reliable and affordable around town car, than the leaf could be a great option.

It's a great car for the money, if you actually know anything about EVs (which many commenters here obviously don't) it's hard to argue that it's not a high value proposition. Sure the battery is passively cooled and it doesn't have 300 mile range, but most people don't need either of those and paying more for them aka a Model Y is wasting that money. If you need a roadtrip car don't get it, if it's a second car in a household it's almost unbeatable.

The amount of savings you are getting by purchasing this vehicle and not having to pay for gas will more than offset the car rental for the occasional long distance trip you may drive.

As far as I'm concerned, that range is unacceptable for a modern vehicle. You could buy a used Chevy Bolt with a ton more range for dirt cheap (I've seen them in my area for as low as 12 thousand dollars), likely with an almost entirely fresh battery due to the recalls and less than 25k miles. You could also buy a new one for around the same price as this but with even more tax incentives. This car is worthless, no one should buy these.

@@Jimster481 There's an entire stack of them where I live (most of them being in the 13-14 thousand range, which is around 9 after the tax credit), 80% of them with less than 20k miles and with fresh batteries because of the recalls. For your weird defense of Nissan by the way, those batteries aren't thermal managed and therefore will degrade much more quickly than Chevy's and perform worse during the winter, and that's on top of them already having pathetic range and using Chademo. The Bolt's a vastly superior vehicle in several other ways too, including cargo space, rear seat capacity, safety features, etc etc. At least where I live, there's also way fewer of them sitting around and they're listed at significantly higher prices (there's exactly one Nissan Leaf within 100 miles of me that costs less than 20k, and it's still slightly more expensive than the Bolt's at nearly 15k).

That's just not true. My 2018 Nissan Leaf 40kWh loses up to 30% of the battery capacity in the winter vs summer. I'm not talking about the heating, I'm simply looking at the range in the winter vs the range in the mild weather before starting the heating. My neighbour's 2020 Tesla Model 3 (non -LFP) starts off with a similar percentage loss, but due to the thermal, the capacity raises while he drives. Look it up. Now, LFP is a different animal, it will discharge OK in the cold, but it can't charge before it's hot enough, so thermal helps in case of charging or regen.

At this point I'd wait for a redesigned Leaf that incorporates NACS Also tax rebates are great for now, but as we've seen, they can go away fairly easily. An EV isn't truly affordable until the MSRP without any rebates is comparable to an ICE car.

I like videos with lower-end products which many viewers could afford. I would have two problems with the Leaf. 1. The 149 mile range is far too short. 2. I think its battery is passively air cooled. I live in the desert. I would need an EV with a battery that is liquid-cooled with active management so it does not get too hot. If I were planning on staying in the USA, I would trade in my 8-year-old hybrid for an EV. (Now bring on the trolls who tell me I cannot comment because I am not looking to purchase a car. Yes, that has actually happened.)

150 miles range is perfect for city driving; which is what the LEAF was built for. You can commute literally 30 miles in each direction and even use part highway and not worry about degrading the battery. My wifes 64 mile commute with our S Plus uses 32-40% battery and it is 99% highway. It would use ~60% battery on a 40KWH model and again its 99% highway and has 2 major super tall bridges. Any city commute is more than taken care of. All our errands around town don't ever use more than 12% even for the furthest trip.

This car being limited to 50kw charging is not that big a deal at all. In my experience, 50kw is the standard DCFC charging level one should expect from any charging site. Whether that be EA, Francis, ChargePoint, EVGo or whoever, 50kw is all one should reasonably expect to get. Yes there are some sites that offer much higher but those are VERY few and far between, if you can even find a working charger at any of those sites. This is the sad reality of EV charging in the US today. It makes absolutely NO difference what those labels say on the units, “Super, Ultra, Extreme”, I don’t care, 50kw is what you should expect to get.

@@Jimster481 1) an adapter is meaningless if the site provider bricks it. EA has already gone on record saying they will not permit and will block any adapters not from an OEM from use on their network. StateofCharge has multiple videos about this involving the third party Tesla/CCS adapters before Tesla offered their own. If it's not from Nissan, expect it to brick when the network provider catches on. 2) if Nissan did not intend for it to go long distance, they would not have started offering a 60+ kwh pack nor would they have increased the DC fast charge rate to 100 kw (despite no one having a 100 kw CHAdeMO kiosk). So clearly that's not true anymore. No don't buy this. It fast charges using chademo and that's on the way out, the remaining ones will start to disappear once they start installing nacs cables in the coming years. We don't have enough chargers to support 3 different standard per site. It also has no battery cooling and that's unheard of on modern EV's, even hybrids have forced air blowers to make batteries last longer. $30k+ is too much to pay for a city car that's not practical to take on long trips. You can get a new Kona EV starting at $34k with both battery cooling and heating for improved fast charging when cold. If you want a $5k used leaf to run around town with then that may be a better option.

LEAF's don't catch on fire like other EV's. The air cooled battery combined with a very safe (but not ultra high output) chemical compound makes them extremely reliable and safe.
