The timing was indeed very unfortunate. If i remember right, deep fake started to gain popularity after this. If they had waited a little bit longer they coulda had a good young Solo put in the movie 😂

@@jencypetersen3410 It wasn't unfortunate, it was just stupid and unnecessary - it just shows that they knew that the script was terrible and needed padding with some nostalgia, so they added dead/de aged characters from ANH. They seriously need to start hiring good writers and give them the freedom to do their jobs properly.

MÓNICA ANDRADE yeah, the geometry of the eyes-nose-mouth area, where likeness primarily lives, is basically spot on. Ewan’s nose and ears are smaller, but given that these typically get larger as we age, this isn’t problem. The only real noticeable difference is that Sir Alec didn’t have a cleft chin, while Ewan does; but Ewan in TPM is the only time we see a beardless Obi. So it works.

I honestly can't think of a Star Wars part I think was badly cast. At worst you have roles like Jake Lloyd as kid Anakin but even then it's mostly the writing/direction that made him irritating. Even Ahmed Best as Jar Jar Binks is legitimately a great actor I think is hillarious, he was just given bad material. Casting is probably the most consistently good thing in the series IMO.

Can we all agree that the casting of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan was the greatest thing after Alex Guiness’ portrayal? The fact the two performances are almost exactly consistent with one another, making Obi Wan one of the absolute best Star Wars characters? (James Arnold Taylor also did Obi Wan good in the Clone Wars show)

This affects me the way the invention of electricity must have affected folks in the industrial age. The overwhelming rush of possibilities and endless ideas are looming large. The Han Solo one should be done by the studios for the entire movie. A new trilogy of Star Wars immediately following ROTJ with Luke, Han, Leia and the whole gang could be made and be as good as the originals. Get Hamill and Ford to do the voices and get a good villian to threaten them after the fall of the empire. Instead we got Rose Tico, BB8, and Rey. Fist pump...

Its still looks a bit weird, not 100% there. I think it would look better if they went for more japaneese style of CGI, like Final fantasy kingsglaive, where everything is CGI, but very photorealistic. It would perfectly fit some Luke Grogue jedi academy spin-off.

If you search for "young Alec Guinness" there's a lot of material but it's all black and white. Don't know if there's deepfake software capable of translating black and white footage to color out there..

Back in early 1999 when TPM was in post-production, I remember reading a crazy rumour that Ewan McGregor had only been cast as Obi Wan for his voice and physicality, and that his face would be replaced by a younger CGI Alec Guinness. It was a pretty pie-in-the-sky idea at the time but looking at what is happening now, was inevitable that this kind of technology would develop.

The prequels catch a lot of shit, but. Seeing this just shows how spot on Ewan McGregor's performance of Obi Wan really was! I had always thought he'd really had the voice and speech patterns from the original down pretty well. A lot of times with deepfakes you can get the slightly "off" feeling from the face/voice mis-match. Not here though, because he nailed the voice so well in his performance .... Crazy good stuff!

According to a documentary I watched about them making the prequels, when casting the part of Obi Wan they observed and considered that the facial symmetry between Alex Guinness and Ewan McGregor was very similar, possibly why this looks so convincing.

@@Mtab2260 He plays two emotions: Angry, and pouty. I'm not convinced that he really loves Padme (or Obi-Wan), I don't see him as haunted by grief (just vengeful or resentful). He's got no warmth and no chemistry. So he was OK as Vader, but only a slightly more believable Anakin than Jake Lloyd. But that's just my personal opinion.

Actually it's pretty convincing as Obi-Wan was only 57 at the time the flim is set. McGregor is 48 now, not far off.

Older people now versus 50 years ago are wildly different. Aging used to be an honor now it's fought at all costs(hair dye, wrinkle cream etc)

This is done incredibly well! It makes you realize how similar they already look, plus the effects! The only thing I have to mention is that his lips don’t ever really close, and lack a bit of movement, but other than that it is great.

They look nothing alike, it's really cringe like the Prequels. There's so many good lines from the REAL Obi-Wan, McGregor has nothing memorable in 3 Movies except "High Ground" "Chosen One" which are a joke like McGregor's non-stop movie flops for 20 years (except Star Wars).

I loved how Ewan did such a terrific job channeling Alec in the prequels. It was outstanding! I would love a redux of the original trilogy with Ewan deep faked in though.

From what I remember, it wasn't that he didn't care for the role -- in fact, he was one of the only ones who saw potential in the first film. It was that he started resenting the role once he starting to be recognized only as Obi-Wan Kenobi instead of being recognized as an actor who has been in many films AS WELL as Star Wars.

This was AMAZING!!! At first, it was off-putting, but I realized that the only reason is that we only have young Ewan McGregor, so his face was smooth as opposed to Alec's more wrinkled face - nothing can be done about that, of course. But I loved it! I thought it was cool to see how Ewan's face makes it look like he is smiling more than Alec's might, so when he was doing the mind trick and he was smiling, it kinda told me that it was very amusing to Obi-Wan to do it. And when he looks at C-3PO, he has a bit of a smile too, which gave the vibes of him remembering 3PO.

This technology is insane for actors playing a role already done by someone else. They can have some old clips like these taken and put with their face on the old actor just to practice imitating them more precisely.
