It was a year ago that I watched that video, doing what I could to learn about how to get into the cybersecurity industry. I'd watch these videos while driving to a job I didn't want to do. Fast forward one year later: I'm not only still watching your amazing videos, David, but I'm also now working full-time as a security consultant. Unbelievable world we live in.

I love that Neil dropped a few unpopular opinions in there. People wanna call themself "hackers" but completely lack the determination and problem solving capabilities to educate themselvs. If you guys think googling stuff is tedious, this job ain't for you ;)
@therealp7667
@therealp7667 Жыл бұрын
Yes and I think its worth noting that this is a learned skill. I know for me I hated googling things in the beginning because it felt like I wasn’t doing things “authentically” or “organically” or something. Then I learned that It is an essential tool in a programmer’s and hacker’s toolbox. Now I am totally at home in the search bar. Getting past the annoyance of googling is just part of the process.
@napalm1101
@napalm1101 Жыл бұрын
That's because most people get their idea of "hacking" from crappy movies and terrible television shows (looking right at you, CSI and similar shows). This leads them to believe that hackers are magical ubergods who are somehow plugged directly into the matrix and know literally everything with perfect recall who can execute that at the drop of a hat. Crazy. The most accurate depiction of hacking ever shown in popular culture is the movie War Games. You know why? It shows a young man sitting around in his underwear in the dark researching tedious, arcane information while his life passes him by just so he can figure out a weird puzzle.

I'm in my late 40s and love new things that challenge me, but if as you say supply outstrips demand, then for someone like myself starting out so late in life and based on what Neal is rightly saying, then should I even consider ethical hacking/pen testing as an eventual career move?

I like that he said the A+, Network+, etc. don't necessarily have to be your first certs or starting point. This was the train of thought back when I started out in '05, but looking back he's absolutely right. You don't need to know how many pins the ISO has standardized some pin-out as to understand other concepts. I believe people should jump in where they find it comfortable, or in what aspect they enjoy the most. After all, this should be about enjoyment and the satisfaction of learning and mastering.
@napalm1101
@napalm1101 Жыл бұрын
I've always told people to stop memorizing arcane esoteric stuff like pin outs or whatever. If you need to know that info by heart you'll see it often enough that you automatically memorize it. If you don't need it that much, you won't remember it, and that's okay. You're better off understanding the underlying concepts and how to put those into play to figure out what you need to know.

Amazing 🤩 and I’m understanding some things that I wrongly take like “you have to have a certification” and that’s was not true… from now on I’m trying to understand and do something with my “hands on”

I never thought bug bounty hunting would be possible for someone with not that much real world experience/advanced web app hacking. But what he said was truly eye opening. Pentesting unpaid still gives you hands on experience and new insights in how I’m doing things and might even land you a bounty after trying. Amazing tip!
