New rumours have been circulating regarding the potential for a Metal Gear Solid remake, given that it's the one game in the mainline Solid series that feels decidedly archaic. Luckily for fans, a remake already exists; with 2004's The Twin Snakes bringing the series to the Gamecube as well as into the modern Metal Gear era with an upgrade to Sons of Liberty's graphical and mechanical framework. It purports to be the definitive way to play Metal Gear Solid; I'm here to tell you, despite it being a grand old time in its own right, why that probably isn't the case.
Also, a correction - it was never fully confirmed as to whether Konami shut down the fan remake last year, just heavily implied. Also, wasn't particularly recent as it turns out. Apologies.

I've been getting into Twin Snakes recently, and honestly, I can see the point here. I feel like "this is the way MGS1 is meant to played" is untruthful, but the sheer dedication the game shows to a silly idea is commendable and fascinating. If I want to experience MGS1 the way it was meant to be, there will always be the original, but Twin Snakes is just an MGS1-themed party, and sometimes that's what I want instead.

It's worth pointing out that Metal Gear Solid Integral (the updated rerelease of MGS1) also contained the ability to shoot in first person.
@zummone
@zummone 6 жыл бұрын
Tobi You can aim in first person, but not with the degree of freedom that you have on MGS2. You can only aim horizontally, just like the third person mode, and I guess the only difference from pressing triangle to point at the enemy, then get back to third person and shoot is the missing camera changes. Also, I remember there being no dodging.
@zacharoninoodle
@zacharoninoodle 6 жыл бұрын
The MGS Integral first person mechanic works effectively the same as third person in terms of mobility. You can’t aim with any greater degree of accuracy (exclusively referring to control capability) in first person than in third person. It’s basically the POV button but you can move and shoot while using it.

Because many people aren't familiar with that version, and remakes tend to use the final versions as their foundation. If we'd get a remake of MGS2, they'd most likely use as Substance its the template. The same would go for Snake Eater and the Subsistence or possibly even the 3DS re-release. If Metal Gear Solid 3 were to be remade and people would find the addition of a free camera and crouch-walking to be contentious, and compromising the game's design, then I'd say it's worth bringing up where those additions came from.

My first experience with the OG metal gear solid was with the Twin Snakes and I freaking LOVED it. I was aware that the game had refined mechanics that totally trivialized certain aspects of the game. That didn’t bother me one bit. Because I knew why it was the way it is, I just looked at it as a choice. If I felt like cheesing the game, I could go nuts and use first person aiming. If I wanted a more dignified play through I could ignore it and play it straight. I am so happy this game was made.

Honestly, everything about Twin Snakes was pretty fucking nice. Everything is practically near identical to the original. The cutscenes were also really well done considering how crazy 3,4, and 5 were. What truly hinders this though was the gameplay. They should of never combined MGS2 with this and should've gone with a slightly different approach.

I once had Brad Furminger as a design teacher (he was a lead designer on Eternal Darkness and Twin Snakes) and he expressed frustration with TS. The programmers and artists enjoyed making the game, as they got to reverse-engineer and reinterpret the art and code. The designers wanted to make more changes to the level design and mechanics of MGS1, but Kojima really wanted a 1:1 remake plus the new cinematics from Kitamura who he had always wanted to work with.

In my personal opinion, the Twin Snakes is the best way to experience MGS1. The graphics are much more improved, and the gameplay has been refined, a lot of archaic design that flawed the original was fixed. Did it make the game a bit easier? Sure, but it didn't detract from the experience, I think it's fair to say that most people today play MGS1 for the story, not the "Amazing" gameplay of the original. I think people are blinded by their nostalgia goggles when it comes to the original MGS1 and won't tolerate another version no matter how improved it is. It's probably due also to the fact also that Kojima said that he doesn't consider it canon, despite the fact that he worked on it as a producer (lol, come on). Then people complaining about the exaggerated Matrix like action hijinks... were they a bit much? Sure, but remember that Kojima could have said stop at any point as producer. If they are such a problem for the fans, maybe in that case we should ignore the Raiden scenes in MGS4 as well, lol.

Demon Dethchase how great would it be if they just said screw it to franchises like Metal Gear and Castlevania and sell them off to other publishers that actually care about the property. I'll be honest, I want Playstation exclusive Metal Gear. They'd do it justice and even though he would probably never want to be in charge of directing the series again, since Kojima Productions is a Sony exclusive developer, he could be a consultant on the series. At least make it a timed exclusive. Metal Gear at Sony just makes the most sense if Konami didn't care about it anymore and wanted to sell it for some fat stacks of cash (its not like Survive is doing wonderful things for them).

Your thought about the Matrix shows that you are sheltered and only watch Hollywood movies because the Matrix did not invent any of that. All of that is Asian and the director of the Twin Snakes cut scenes is Kitamura Ryuhei who is the famed Japanese director of Versus and Midnight Meat Train. The Matrix COPIED from Asian movies. Also, its shows you aren't the fan of Metal Gear that you think you are. Metal Gear characters are all superhuman including Snake. The fact you didn't realize that only highlights your ignorance.

@@DaRunningMan I know you're most likely a troll but sure, I'll feed you just once. "The Matrix COPIED from Asian movies." No shit, tell me more about how it borrows elements from Fist of Legend (Including why they tracked down Yuen Woo-ping and asked him to be their fight choreographer), Ghost in The Shell and a whole lot more kung fu and anime films of the time. There was also an interview where the Wachowski's listed the influences on the script and the movie and that information has literally been available to the public for the past 22 years at this point. Is water wet? I'm sure you will tell me. "All of that is Asian and the director of the Twin Snakes cut scenes is Kitamura Ryuhei who is the famed Japanese director of Versus and Midnight Meat Train." Again, no shit! Kitamura Ryuhei is Asian? WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED! Next you're gonna tell me that all the Japanese people I lived with in Japan were Asian... OMG.... I DIDN'T KNOW! I DIDN'T KNOW THEY WERE ASIAN!!! You also mention Versus and The Midnight Meat Train in relation to the game, The Twin Snakes, and The Matrix, so let's look at those now! You say that The Matrix copied from Asian movies right after listing those two so let's see when everything came out. The Matrix: 1999 Versus: 2000 MGS The Twin Snakes: 2004 The Midnight Meat Train: 2008 Wow, look like The Matrix came out before all of those things listed... interesting. Also I have a copy of Versus on my shelf, it's pretty damn low budget and not really Matrix like outside of wearing trench coats and trying to look cool doing martial arts in the woods with super fast cuts and crappy wirework which was the style of the time just about everyone was trying to ape because.... The Matrix? HOLY SHIT WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT! I should also point out that Kitamura only directed the cutscene's for The Twin Snakes, not the entire game. I will also point out that it was at HIDEO KOJIMA'S DIRECTION that he go back and redo them all as they were originally 1:1 with the PS1 version and wanted more action, so he said "Okay, time to copy The Matrix in terms of style!" As for MGS and superhuman characters... some are, yes, but Snake is just a clone of Big Boss who was just a legendary badass soldier who didn't possess any kind of superpowers. Sure, you can argue that they messed with Snakes genetics and I will give you that, but it does not let you backflip kick off an airborne missile and jump 10m into the air to shoot a rocket into an inflight Hind-D that carries your twin brother who thinks he is the inferior one when it turns out it WAS SNAKE WHO HAD THE REJECT GENES AND WAS STILL A BADASS. Maybe proving that combat experience and intuition may not be genetic and that anyone can hone them? But that's getting into MGS5 territory at this point. And yes, "Nanomachines, son!" will not be accepted as an answer explaining how everyone is able to do something because it's the catch all response even in universe which is pretty lazy writing. So in conclusion: I have been playing Metal Gear since the MSX days on an actual MSX so go fuck yourself? Have a good one! P.S.: Is water wet?

@@worsel555 "I know you're most likely a troll but sure" No, I'm serious. " No shit, tell me more about how it borrows elements" You didn't know anything about Asian cinema when the Matrix came out. Everyone who never watched any Hong Kong action films where the ones stupidly saying "Matrix" every time they saw someone wearing a trench coat or doing action in slow motion. You're exactly what I said you are. A sheltered boy that only watches Hollywood movies and thought the Matrix invented all that. You only found out a little about Asian movies after the Matrix. When Twin Snakes came out, all the idiots complaining about the cut scenes only saw the Matrix and no Asian cinema. You just repeated everything they were saying on those mindless message boards because you didn't know what you are talking about. The fact that you are still writing "Matrix" even after claiming that you know about Asian movies means that you are even more dense than I thought because you are just saying these things out of habit. "You also mention Versus and The Midnight Meat Train in relation to the game" No, I didn't you illiterate child. I said that in relation only to Kitamura Ryuhei, to identify the director by some of his work. The fact you tried to build an argument around this shows that you can't read well. "not really Matrix like outside of wearing trench coats and trying to look cool doing martial arts in the woods with super fast cuts and crappy wirework which was the style of the time just about everyone was trying to ape because.... The Matrix?" Uh... no. Thanks again for proving how ignorant you are of cinema outside of Hollywood. The trench coat thing was popularized by John Woo in the 80s. Wirework was incorporated into action scenes in Asian cinema decades before. None of these things were invented by the Matrix but you still insist it so. Plus, Kitamura made very clear that his influences for Versus were samurai movies, Evil Dead, George Romero, Mad Max, Highlander, etc... NONE of that is Matrix. You have no idea what you are talking about. "As for MGS and superhuman characters... some are, yes, but Snake is just a clone of Big Boss who was just a legendary badass soldier who didn't possess any kind of superpowers. " No, he isn't just a clone. Solid Snake is a straight up superhuman and that is made crystal clear in the games. Snake was modified genetically to be stronger, faster, and more agile than Big Boss. Solid Snake took out a tank, a psychic and a deadlier Metal Gear than the one from before. Snake fought Grey Fox who is cybernetically enhanced and fought him to a standstill hand to hand. Snake survived a hallway of microwaves which a normal human would have died in 2 to 3 seconds in then went on to kill Liquid Ocelot. In the last cutscene of Metal Gear 1 we literally see Solid Snake outrun Outer Heaven's Nuclear explosion which if you didn't know that's faster than the speed of sound. Solid Snake is superhuman and that's not debatable. Twin Snakes is more accurate to the sequels of MGS as it's completely consistent to them. You have no idea what you are talking about. "So in conclusion: I have been playing Metal Gear since the MSX days on an actual MSX " The irony of this statement is hilarious. Not only do you not know much about movies outside of Hollywood, not only did you prove that you are illiterate but here you claim you are such an expert in Metal Gear Solid yet I just proved you don't know much about it. You're just repeating comments you read on online forums without thinking. Talk about an NPC.

I only ever had one issue with Twin Snakes: Audio. Rob Paulsen should never have been Grey Fox. George Byrd/Greg Eagles is the reason I fell in love with Fox's character. Encounter, Escape, Rex's Lair and Duel for all the bosses was an integral part of the soundtrack, the Best is Yet to Come looping over sad scenes made melancholic delivery all the more impactful. The weird boss themes in TTS and the lack of these soundtracks completely removed all tension and subsequently, removed the memorable soundtrack that drew me in and made me fall in love. Naomi's lack of British accent and Nastasha's lazier delivery was a lot weaker, imo. Everything else, bloody solid, I really hope if Bluepoint do remake it they factor this sort of thing into consideration. Sound is important, voice acting is important - changing them too much is a detriment at times.

Higharolla Kockamamie I have the exact opposite feeling. For starters the black darpa chief having the voice as the white guy is tone deaf as fuck. Second I love Greg eagles. im pretty sure in MGS2 Raiden talked about doing a shadow moses VR training simulation.......Could that be what TwinSnakes was, Raiden's POV of it in simulation? Considering Raiden also gets an M9 you could think they were training him in different methods of taking out guards, methods that wouldnt alert an entire squad like shooting a non-silenced weapon? Probably looking too into this, really hoping they port this version to the switch Could also explain the voice acting (like ofc in reality they already recorded these 6 years back so the original emotion is gone) but the colonel A.I, everything else was just one big test?

I remember playing TTS during the 'cube days, after MGS2 but long before MGS3 came out, and I felt almost exactly the same way. It's MGS, sure, but high on anime power fantasy. The cinematography was so far over the top (and the additions to Snake's moveset so game-breaking) that it felt like Silicon Knights had absolutely no grasp of the subtlety of Kojima's original work. And that's really saying something, knowing just how far detached Kojima and the Metal Gear franchise would become from subtlety.

Great vid. You basically summed up exactly how I feel about this game. I’ve just recently played it after sourcing a GameCube from a friend. I was initially playing for nostalgic reasons, but Twin Snakes doesn’t quite satisfy the itch I’d been having. The atmosphere of the original is lost in the over the top cutscenes and new soundtrack. For example, it shows us exactly what the ninja did to all those guards in the Nuclear Storage facility before the boss battle - which was OTT.... as opposed to the player merely able to hear it from the next room, then walking into a corridor of horror. I think it was more fun to imagine how he killed them. Anyway, I’ve subscribed, great work! Peace from Ireland!

We all know if they did not include first person everyone would have complained not to mention the critics saying 'nothing new added where is first person'. They need to add the enemy AI from MGS2 with attack teams and status updates. Than it would feel more balanced with the first person. I don't mind the card cooling and heating. It allows some time for the events to sink in and builds an eerie feeling of 'something big is about to happen'. Kind of spooky being forced to walk past Vulcan Raven's corpse over and over whilst the ravens are watching Snake. The rocket backflip is ridiculous even for anime.

You put to words many of my emotions while playing Twin Snakes. I'm a huge fan of MGS1. I would say it is my favorite game of all time but I wax a wane between that and FF7 (they are such different games I consider them both my favs). I played Twin Snakes, but only once whereas I've played MGS 1 literally dozens of times. Twin Snakes felt so contrived to me. MGS1 is frustrating due to it's limitations, sure... However, that's only because you're now playing it after playing the incredible mechanics of The Phantom Pain (or any of the games in the series released after MGS1). But it wasn't limited at the time of the release. It was the most mind blowing thing I had ever played. The music, the incredible voice acting, the gameplay, the story. I honestly think my favorite scene is the elevator ride up to the surface right at the start, while snake is removing the dive gear. It's just so dramatic. Twin Snakes didn't have a single moment that made me feel that way. The voice cast was the same (and for that I am appreciative) but they didn't do it with the same passion. It would have been better to leave the vocal tracks exactly as the original. A remake is a wonderful idea...but sometimes it just doesn't work out. You are fighting nostalgia. Nostalgia is powerful and it permeates all of your senses. Right down to the final mixing of the audio, not any individual track of audio, but the way the mix sounds as a whole. It isn't just your tangible senses either. It's going to bring you back to the time in your life when you first played it. It's incredibly hard to combat that. You need to be extra careful and considerate of all of these factors. The world is full of remakes that are "okay" (see Total Recall and the remake as an example...the remake was truly "good" IMO but I'll watch the OG over the remake every single time because the original if fantastic).

Konami will release it as Metal Gear Solid Kojima Sucks and it will stay the original game, except they will port it to the next generation consoles and make it have loads of bugs and compatibility issues with no music and new voice actors from Ride To Hell Retribution. They'll also charge 60 bucks for it and have micro-transactions from going from Disc 1 to Disc 2. They will also make all bosses impossible to beat unless you pay money to take away their invulnerability. They will have it only on one difficulty known as "Money Buys Happiness" and it will be spotted-fail formula. The only way to change the difficulty is to pay for a micro-transaction to put it down one level each time for 5 bucks.

Dude, its a feeling. There is no evidence for that. There wouldn't be any evidence if I had played the original. People say that the Original has an atmosphere of isolation, a grittyness that makes the situation feel real even though its completely ridiculous and the way the characters behave and talk and what is happening to them makes this story feel intimate but grand. This is what I felt playing The Twin Snakes.

i'm interested in playing the twin snakes version of mgs1, If I were to avoid the first person perspective, would I get a similar experience to the original mgs1 or are there more unavoidable things that broke the game?

I find it ironic that MGS1 fans criticise The Twin Snakes for it's Matrix-Type cutscenes, yet Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater are somehow fine doing the same thing. And before someone uses the counterargument of TTS being released before MGS3, should I remind you that they were released in THE SAME YEAR?!

@@filipeflower If you don't like TTS, that's fine, but I personally find it baffling that most fans forgot that MGS2 and the fan favourite MGS3 especially also have crazy, over the top, action oriented cutscenes like The Twin Snakes, and somehow they get a pass with Vamp (I know he's a vampire, but it's still ridiculous) running on water and walls.

@@Jahlil.W Actually, I find that exaggerated too. As for The Twin Snakes, I have both versions of MGS1, so I can tell what those are like. I even bought a silver GameCube to play MGS The Twin Snakes and Legend of Zelda Wind Waker.

Hamb-daddy with the sick MGS takes. Gladly never played twin snakes, definitely can see how the game not being built for those MGS2 features breaks it. Those boss fights were jokes lol, totally imbalanced. BUT LET ME JUST TELL YOU THIS discovered in researching for a video but MGS1 Integral on PS1 actually did have a first-person aiming mode, it was just too convoluted to unlock and seemed to have been built and then removed from the main game for being too overpowered. I forget exactly the unlock requirements but it was given after a first play through just like bandana/stealth. It was meant as like a reward for players who’ve already done the game. Twin Snakes giving you that from the get go? Ouuuuuuuuuuuf Love you my dad

I've always looked at TTS as the legend of Snake being told as where MGS is how it actually happened. How every legend has his grand tale told as an unstoppable force. TTS was that telling where his situations were hyped up grander then what they actually were. I loved that
