Dream Theater is what you get when you mix the technicality of Rush (on steroids), with the prog of Yes/ELP/Genesis, with the metal of Queensrÿche/Iron Maiden/Metallica..... All influences of theirs interpreted by some Berklee schooled monster musicians and friends. Pretty much the pinnacle of prog metal.

Lyricist Kevin Moore refers to Shakespeare's Hamlet, as told from Prince Hamlet's point of view. "The lyrics allude heavily to the play, echoing Hamlet's desire to give in to his urge to gain revenge for his father at the cost of his own sanity." Over the final moments of the song, James LaBrie can be heard singing the song's only direct quote from the play: "O, that this too, too solid flesh would melt". Therein, Prince Hamlet is pleading for escape from his mortal trappings.

First time I ever heard these guys was at a Megadeth concert back in the day. They went on right before Megadeth and blew me away. At one point the drummer did a mind blowing 5 minute drum solo, threw one of his drumsticks about 10 feet above his head then caught it and went right into the intro to the next song 🤯. Seriously one of the coolest shows I've ever seen live. Even Brad was rocking out to this one

It's been a long road trying to get this song to win a poll. At times frustrating to watch it lose to mediocre songs with bad audio for the lyric video. It's like the cool kids in the room are trying to show you this shiny metal object and others are saying No, come look at this thing made out of wood and plastic. lol This is the reaction I was expecting from you two! There is so much awesome Dream Theater material and I hope more songs can win polls! Now we can talk about getting Sons Of Apollo to win polls.

Still have fond memories of catching this on the radio when it was released. It was really refreshing to hear something new that I enjoyed on the radio. Prog rock is about building on an idea and adding flavour to it hence the switch ups or transitions in a song. It's fairly technical to the untrained ear but you both enjoyed it still, which is commendable. Glad your 1st taste at prog rock/metal was a blast. The band does live up to its name from the calibre of music that they've put out there. One of my favorites by them.

no that's the real ending with the song. we went to see them in San Jose about 5 years ago. OMG it was so lit! We were in the 8th row from the stage . That was the 2nd time I've seen them live - first time was 10 years earlier opening for Queensryche. In the San Jose show 5 yrs ago, they closed with this one and tore the roof off the place. My eyes were glued to the drummer the whole show - most amazing drummer I've ever seen live. And the most epic drumming rig set up Ive ever seen. I first heard this song - I was sitting in my are going in to work, I had no idea who it was and my head was spinning my jaw on the floor. I was late getting back to work from lunch cuz I couldn't shut the song off! I called the radio station to ask who it was, and learned - had never heard of them. I went home that evening and drove by Tower Records and bought their CD. That was 1992.

I mentioned this briefly in a super chat. The song chronicles Hamlet and the revenge that Hamlet is taking due to the death of his Father (the king of Denmark). His Father comes back as a ghost and tells Hamlet who did this to him, so Hamlet sets out to avenge his death ("only until your will is done"). Ultimately Hamlet dies himself signified by the abrupt ending. The song mentions specific parts of the play as Hamlet carries out his revenge. I did a college paper on whether or not the ghost was real, as only certain people see him. Also the lyric video is in error at the end. "oh that this to, too solid flesh, would melt" a direct quote from the play.

While i know they aren't for Everyone, most people do recognize how amazing they all are. Dream Theater is a band that is really hard to recommend to people since a lot of people dont want to listen to 6 min+ of an average song. Not only that, but every album is a new masterpiece of compositions that vary in style and music genre within progressive rock/metal.. that i could give a huge list of recommendations to get some diversity in.. but i wont! I'll just mention my favorite track, "Scarred", and favorite Instrumental, "Hell's Kitchen". Thanks for the great videos guys.

Thank you so much for reacting to this song! So glad you both liked it! The live (or studio version) of their song Breaking All Illusions would blow you mind! Also the song The Alien is a song off their newest album and they won a Grammy for it would also be a great listen! You guys are great!

Wow, this totally made my day. I know that a lot of fans prefer to listen to their live performances over studio albums, but I love the studio versions of Dream Theater songs so this was a treat for me. And I’m so happy Brad liked it! They have a huge catalog of albums and songs to choose from, but my favorites are the songs off their albums Images and Words (which this song came from) and Awake. You can’t go wrong with this band, though. I love that you just get lost in the music and imagery they bring. And yes, that is the way the song ends but it also transitions right into next one on the album so it doesn’t feel so jarring. If you’re looking for more Dream Theater, I’d love to see you react to “Take the Time” or “Learning to Live” from this album. Or from Awake, there’s “The Mirror” or “Lies” or “Caught in a Web.”

I knew Lex would love this Dream Theater song, I'm glad Brad felt it too. It's artistic yet crafted by exceptional musicians. The transitions in the music are seamless and blend because it's envisioned well as they're taking you up and down the sounds of life - like a roller-coaster - the transitions follow the words and melody of the lyrics - message - and are why those transitions exist. You can speak very well with your voice - it's an instrument, yet it's not the only instrument we can relate to in life nor which speaks with us. Every film has a soundtrack for a reason... life itself in our own minds can follow and mirror soundtracks - all emotion may be conveyed through images, words and of course sound.

Oh my gosh there's SO many Dream Theater songs to recommend. I would say a good song to try next is Breaking All Illusions, and if you want to watch it live there's a video of them performing it in Boston where they nail it. Either studio or live, its really good, so many transitions that are perfect. Its definitely a longer song but absolutely worth it. It's so cool to see you guys getting into prog, I'm hyped!!

When I heard this on the radio in 1992, when I was only 16, I immediately fell in love with the band, and they've been my favorite band since then. I've seen them live 4 times, and let all them except the original keyboarding on this album, Kevin Moore, and the new drummer Mike Mangini, who has been in the band since 2011. I was in a band that covered this song in 1995. Y'all should check out my favorite dream theater song, Learning to live. And yes, that's how the song ends. Haha!! It always catches people off guard.

When I saw the thumb nail I thought this may be too much for Brad but I was wrong. He really gets it now, It takes time to develop a ear for this music and its complexity. Thats the real end and they do that live too. All this album is awesome, there`s not a bad song on it.

@@stanflahaut1893 Maybe from a technical level they are better, but most of the Dream Theater songs I've heard just don't turn me on. A good song isn't all about demonstrating technical skill with your instrument.

Dream Theater contain a very high level of technical playing and such an imagination and creativity that a ton of musicians aspire to achieve in their own styles. DT is often used in music theory classes. Theres a bunch of valuable lessons to be learned from them.

The progressive metal Trinity is Dream Theatre, Queensrÿche, and Fates Warning. Since you guys love this, you would love Fates Warning. They have a ton of really good songs. Hard to pick one song, but for starters “Point of View” would be good. Definitely something from the album Parallels.

Dream Theatre is not prog rock (Rush, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Styx, Crimson King, Coheed & Cambria, Mars Volta, etc) . They are prog metal ! ( Queensryche, Tool, Fates Warning, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, Symphony X, Jinjer, Opeth Lacuna Coil, etc) ! A little heavier. But, close enough lol, yall liked it. Prog is complex and classical music & jazz influenced. DT is a very talented group. They are like Rush meets Metallica. Surprised that this won a poll in the '90s stream (normally ruled by alternative rock, hip hop and alternative dance music), Tool is about the only prog metal band to win in those '90s streams. And maybe Queensryche. lol. You'll need to check out more DT, they are awesome. This song was on the radio a lot back in the '90s and video on MTV, blew many of us away when I was in school when it first hit the airways. Sounded like Iron Maiden on steroids. "Lie" is also another one of their songs that got a lot of radio and MTV time, check that one out, too. And several other songs.
