Diving back into Dream Theater - this time with some actual singing!
The community voted and we'll be looking at "Pull Me Under" and the vocals of James LaBrie. For such a structured song (comparing it to Dance of Eternity which blew my mind) there is some tasty musicianship awaiting us!
If you enjoyed this video please like, sub and hit the bell (if you want to).

In spite of knowing this song for decades, I had never seen the music video and didn't know going into this to expect a shorter version. I can appreciate how someone who has never heard if before might get hooked, but this was so frustrating for me! It's like someone took away my sandwich after only two bites.

If you want a song that really shows off James' vocal range I would suggest "Learning to Live" from the same album. His vocal ranges from B2 on the low end to F#5 on the high end. It also has a really nice instrumental interlude in the middle of the song that you'll really like as well. However I would recommend the album version rather than the live version specifically for the vocal injury you mentioned at the end of the video.

Their greatest hits compilation is called 'Greatest Hit and 21 Other Pretty Good songs'... This was their one big hit, most of their other songs are not as accessable as this one, your analysis was spot on. Their musical range is amazing, from easy listening type songs to aggressive metal and tons of progressive in between. It's quite a rabbit hole to explore.

I love this song, tho this version is missing a lot of itself, I guess its the radio edit version. I go back and for between this album (Images and Words) and the follow up "Awake" - I think Awake has the most impressive vocal performances of their entire discography. Check out the song "Innocence Faded" he has a really lovely vocal resonance in several parts, where its hard to tell which note he's actually singing because it sounds like it could be multiple. Great reaction :)

A couple decades ago one of my brothers and myself went to a show with Queensryche and Dream Theater co headlining. At the end of the show both bands came out together for the encore. Towards the end of the song they were playing Tate and Labrie simultaneously executed a very high belt. As their pitches went up Tate topped out, and Labrie kept going higher... it was incredible. It was clear to see Tate was visibly irritated at being out done 😆

Speaking of " hair metal" which I think is just a demeaning term for a lot of great bands of the 80s and early 90s.i was listening to Cinderella live at the key club the other day.i hadn't listened to them in a long time but I have always loved this band.i would call them bluesy rock with glam elements in their image( big hair and makeup) I would love for you to do a vocal analysis on this band elizabeth.tom keifer is another singer who has a very distinct voice.very high, gritty, bluesy and deep at times.he is also a rhythm guitarist as well.fun fact...Tom was a huge influence on lizzy hale vocal wise.they have so many fantastic songs.my 3 favorites are " bad seamstress blues" " shake me" " fire and ice" .they also have so many hit songs...gypsy road..night songs...don't know what you got till it's gone..the last mile..nobody's fool...you may have heard one of these songs in passing.

An all time classic song (although it is the radio edit). Great for doing this! I'd love for you to react to Iron Maiden with Paul Di'Anno, their singer before Bruce Dickinson. He wasn't as good as Bruce but he is rock solid in his own right and I'd love for SOMEONE in the professional vocal department assess him. Recommended tracks would be Wrathchild, Phantom of the Opera, Killers, Remember Tomorrow, Purgatory or the s/t song Iron Maiden.

Most older DT fans' introduction to the band - amazing first song, even though it's off their second album (first one had different vocalist). Pull Me Under is supposed to be inspired by the soliloquy from Hamlet - "I'll take seven lives for one, and then my ON-LY father's son". To really see James' early range, check "Innocence Faded" from their Awake album - a really great album in its own right, yet very different from Images and Words. And yes, this is the "radio edit" of the song, so cut up considerably for time. The orginal recording flows better.

Backing up Fallout Fan here to say, that in the album versions of the song, James fades out saying "Oh that this too too solid flesh would melt..." which is a line straight from the soliloquy.

Always a delight to see somebody getting into Dream Theater for the first time. Definitely an all-time favorite (even post-Mike Portnoy (the drummer here; one of the best in the business), though to a lesser extent) and Pull Me Under's the perfect song to start with, given that it was quite literally their first single. If I had to suggest a song for the future, Octavarium - it's absolutely incredible, it's one of James Labrie's favorites to sing and the lyrics "trapped inside this Octavarium" still give me chills to this day. Although there aren't many Dream Theater songs that _aren't_ amazing, to be honest.

I'd been waiting for you to do a Dream Theater song with actual singing. I'd recommend "The Spirit Carries On" from their live DVD titled "Score" if you want to hear more; it's in a totally different musical style that I'm sure you'll enjoy. Oh and the end to the full version of this song isn't classic or a fade out at all, it's a hilariously hard and sudden stop that always leaves people wondering if they're listening to a poorly edited version of the song.

This was their one and only "hit", it got a lot of airplay on MTV and launched their career. Without the success of this song maybe there would be no DT today. It's also one of their most straight forward songs, but even then, the album version of the song has 4 more minutes of music. This version doesn't do justice to the real thing. Now I would recommend listening to "Learning to Live" from that same album, it's an amazing 12 plus minutes epic with outstanding musicianship and some incredible vocals, specially one gorgeous note toward the end of the song :)

I saw these guys on the tour for this album, damn that was a long time ago, I'm old. Love that James is wearing a Napalm Death shirt too.

I agree, this is one of the more catchy songs and quite old already of Dream Theater. I have seen them a few times in concert and it was always a blast. Have a look at Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, a really cool concept album. Best wishes from Germany, or top above???? Edit: Stupid me, you already actually did that….

From the second album, Images and Words, the 1st record with James on vocals. I'm included in the group that had this song as their introduction to DT. First saw it on MTV's Headbangers Ball. I miss that show. Metropolis Pt 1 and Under a Glass Moon are 2 other good ones from that album you may want to listen too. This album came out in 1992. !994 was his vocal injury. Basically food poisoning caused vomiting, which ruptured the vocal chords. Dr's said to rest, he went on tour anyway. He explains in detail in his interview with TCV. As for where to start with RUSH, just talk to Elizabeth and Kirk. They'll get you started with a good one.

This version was cut short for radio purposes ...the longer original album version is better ! since a song is like telling a story, it's like if you skipped a hole chapter !! For the next song I suggest you check out Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory the complete album is a concept story that must be listened to from beginning to end ... not just one song ...maybe make a Dream Theater marathon with this album...you won't regret it ! Cheers Julia love your work ...(Steven)

I was watching a video called Parkway Drive making ‘Darker Still’. During the choir recording part there seemed to be a familiar face or someone that looks a lot like you 😉 That’s so cool if that’s the case! Would love to see some Parkway Drive videos from you even though there’s mostly harsh vocals 😁🤘

There are many songs to hear from them. A good one is the live version of illumination theory at the Boston theater.

He has a solo album which is really good. Check it out. Alot of their material is not accessable. That's why checkout the solo album much more enjoyable.
