Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam says no one should have a “monopoly” over compassion in the society.
He was responding to Sengkang GRC Member of Parliament Jamus Lim’s maiden speech in Parliament on Thursday (Sept 3), where he touched on the issues of minimum wage and policy making.
His speech drew a fiery exchange between People’s Action Party and Workers’ Party MPs.

A blended design of min. wage and PWM (2 visions) can be where a min. wage range is set for a limited period. Then PWM criteria are developed for each sector of various industries. Iterative developing time is for the purpose of re-designing the 2 visions into a shared vision.

Definitely he will cherish and savoir the moment where he trounced Tharman hard in all aspects. All Tharman did was to engage in petty arguments rather then debate. 1) He claimed there is a monopoly in compassion among workers party which clearly there is none. 2) He claimed Dr Jamus Lim put out a strawman argument that the government only focus on efficiency in all it's policies which is obviously not what Dr Jamus Lim said. 3) He used an indirect ad hominem fallacy against Dr Jamus Lim when at the end he said he never heard an economist cite material from a university as universities don't do publich research, people does. Trying to insult Dr Jamus Lim and hit him below the belt. With his actions, he had lost all form of respect. People thought he is the only one in PAP that played clean politics, apparently he does not.

jamus lim made a fool of himself without a propsoal and just preaching emptily, while he could not answer with concrete answers when he was posed with practical questions by the PAP members about universal wage propsoals and youth employment. the WP is fake by trying to monopolised compassion, the biggest compassionate ministers are our PAP who has done much for our country and gave us lots of benefits while charging us only peanuts in terms of income taxes as compared to many countries in europe and the USA AND AUSTALIA. I HATE JAMUS LIM and I think he is a SMUG AND A FAKE! naive singproeans ! look at what you have voted for ! a clown like politician who preaches like a little boy in front of older PAP ministers who have been in power of years and light years ahead in terms of knowledge than Jamus. thank god the WP isn;t in charge of our country, otherwise we end up like the next HONGKONG OR THAILAND. Tharman attempted to prevent polarisation. Jamus was saying that on the continuum between equity and efficiency, our position leaned towards efficiency and so we gotta re-balance it towards more equity. Yes, policies tend to be efficient as to become quick fixes and many times decisions taken so swiftly and acted upon so fast that in attempting to be super-efficient, they become ineffective.
@officialzacadammorrison
@officialzacadammorrison 3 жыл бұрын
People do not understand Dr Jamus position. Tharman is thinking about fixing the problem at a tangible level. System wise. Jamus position is that the system is already running and it's not reaching out to people as efficient as it claim to be. And changing policies every now and then doesn't help as much. Both are very strong points and that they should merge, blend. The outcome effects from either, no one really knows. While Gan Siow Huang noted that it will cause employers to retrench workers, fact is it employers are going to do what they are going to do. It's a business. The lower the wage, the better. I can tell many tales about this, since I have work years on the ground level. So the Crux here of Singapore government and all governments really is do we keep doing the practical, try to fix the macro issue of technology and automation and risk creating an 'Orange PM' because it's too slow and not accessible to all or do we do a 'helicopter cashdrop' like what we are currently kinda doing but not kinda doing, and try to fix it. Which we all know that jobs of yesterday are never ever coming back. Thus U.B.I It will happened. It's a matter of when. It's just too volatile.

As a south east asian, I often face prejudice from the locals. However, Singapore is no longer allowing foreigners to sit in middle level PMET jobs anymore and it's not right to demand that the MOM to give the top notch positions to us. We have to international ourselves by gaining global experience, learn a new European language and replace our compeititors. This is what I am trying to say.

when country having low GDP per capita, income growth is required and it need to focus of efficiency and everyone will agree because survival is first priority. when country achieve high gdp per capita, it become complicated as some citizen will prefer maintain current income level and focus on closing the gap between rich and poor , some citizen will prefer efficiency still as it is the core competency of the country and it can achieve more by continue the focus of efficiency. There is no need to jump to conclusion that the other party has a "monopoly of compassion" (or anything) just because Jamus suggested "more compassion in policies making" sounds really inappropriate like children engaging in petty arguement at the playground. Attacking an opponent at every opportunity especially on imagined excesses will only diminish one's standing as a senior statesman. It would have been more gracious to acknowledge the other party suggestions but explain how a large does of "compassion" had always been (if true) a strong factor in formulating policies. Otherwise thank the other party to his contribution.

Have you not been able to think hollistically that if the minimum wage arrives to our society at a time like this, employers will be pissed off? Companies are in dire straits themselves, why would they wanna entertain our minimum wage demands? There are cheaper countries like Malaysia and Philippines, please take a look at ourselves in the mirror before we demand. We are small country. The USA and Chin can scream and shout, and punish other nations. We can't do that. Minimum wage my ass. You wanna have the same rate of unemployment as scandnavian countries who practises minimum wage? Their unemployment rate is 7.8% before covid. Have your favourite WP, considered that? Do they have a proposal and solution? Answer is no. Just talk talk talk and yank yank with sentences like ''cockles of my heart'' I have lived in Finland for 7 years, everyday is like Covid 19, high unemployment. Stay focus and wake up Blue Vastly

Between a minimum wage and a Progressive wage model scheme, I'd rather chose the PWM. This is because I have witnessed many employers refusing to hire someone in Finland because of the minimum wage law or just hire them at the same wage for years to come without increments. Make it easier for employers to hire us first, then we upgrade ourselves and demand more. When we are the PWM programme, it's harder to get rid of us.

Perhaps PAP should give a comprehensive report card to the public to show when it was implemented and how it actually brought about higher wages for the bottom 20% of our working community. Though he was actually briefed by Vivian Balakrishnan during the pre-election roundtable debate with Chee Soon Juan about this topic. WP is trying to bank in the echos of the people n pressure our government to oblige in order to gain more votes n support. Their demands from the our government carries grave consequences that Europe , which practices the same manifestos, suggested by the WP . I am not impressed by Jamus Lim because I am a well travelled Singaporean who has lived in 5 countries n three continents, raising my two kids overseas at the same time. If Singspore ever practices manifestos such as minimum wages, giving citizens salaries, pulling out foreigners, letting young Singaporeans own flats, allowing Singaporeans to sell their flats to which ever ethnic groups they want, we r gonna see, firstly, firms don’t hire anymore, which is what is happening in Europe cause our minimum wages r too High, foreigners working in sanitization industries, will depart prematurely cause our high minimum wages is able to pay them well for several years with just a few months work, young women will choose not to get married n have children out of the wedlock’s cause there is affordable n easy housing available, these groups of young single women slips into poverty easily, citizens lazing around cause there r generous payouts, our towns n HDB flats will turn into one ethnic group cheap towns or flats soon, leading to social unrest like what we r witnessing in the west, where black, China towns or immigrant blocks of social housing exists, international firms not wanting to situate themselves in singapore cause they can’t recruit internationally well experienced talents, leading to high unemployment, which is what Scandinavian countries r experiencing today. WP can fool many Singaporeans but not the ones who r well travelled. Being in Australia or USA doesn’t mean you have seen the world. It takes a lot more than that to say you r truly international, n the WP lacks of an international mindset. I am not voting for you guys. I will walk to my town council n speak to the ministers personally without the need for any WP to represent me.

Jennifer, you hit the nail right the head. Its always a pleasure to read points raised by people with developed critical faculties and well traveled (and i do not mean travelling to so many countries and take a selfie in front of for e.g Eiffel Tower, Buckingham palace etc, at least thats not my definition of well traveled). I am not a big fan of Jamus Lim from day one because of his presentation. Its a long journey for him to prove himself . Chen Show Mao was also very well received initially but did he deliver?

Thank you guy for your support, my husband is a Scandinavian, I have lived in finland for ten years, india for two years, China for 6 years, Brazil for 3 years, n am currently in the Middle East, headhunters told us that Singaporeans can’t leave their comforts n hawker centers, but yet we r complaining of foreign talents all the time while we aren’t adventurous ourselves. My own European niece chosed to have a child out of the wedlock n be a single mother, many children as young as 4 yrs old were seen wandering in the streets during the winter cause their mummies r in the pub drinking, this is what happens when you have cheap housing n generous mother’s payout, children r born out of wedlock a n they slip into poverty easily. Our ministers r trying their best all the time yet the WP make it look like they r the ones with the heart of a nightingale.

Tharman have a good speech but Jamus got a better speech, it seem like Tharman think that opposition find thing to argue. I disagree with Tharman view! I feel that worker party in parliament are to see what pap can did better, with some issue to help everyone moving forward, and of cuz workers party do agree with some pap government policy, but this is a parliament what more can u say about good policy that they have made? Why must talk about good policy pap made when it is already good? So that why workers party only address the policy that they disagree only🤷‍♀️ so my dear PAP voter stop having this kind of shit thinking, opposition voter and resident vote them into parliament is to speak up for those politic that left them behind and need to address not to go there to praise the government for good policy, get your facts right! Did they totally took out totally all their policy and reject everything? In parliament only a few policy debate have been made. And people vote for PAP is to serve well, not to fix the opposition! Just serve us manage the country well. So I think infect voter expectations of WP seem to hit their expectation already as compare to PAP and well u would say of cuz WP supporter expectation is easy to hit compare to the PAP, and I can tell u that is for sure look at their salary million dollar over 16k MP, with what right u all expecting a 16k expectation to be equal high than the minister expect and expectation of ruling party from their voter? If a 16k can do equally well that minister then why do we still need minister for? So dun criticise Jamus he is first time elected MP. And he can talk with this caliber is already very good. Non ruling party MP can talk like him. We have to face the issue to determine, not face the party but blind fold not to face the issue of every problem just because is PAP what they do sure right cuz they PAP. That is what u all have given us such dumb impression, pls give us more better reasoning why thaman is better not alway thaman for the win, way to go , go pap, only these few word already tell u all see party over issue! How to impress opposition voter to vote for PAP like that?

You do know he has the capacity to earn much more by not being a minister right? He is highly sought after by international or private organisations. He is already taking a huge pay cut and sacrificing his real worth by being a small time minister of a tiny weeny country to help some illogical citizens such as yourself.

Blue Vatsky, you are also very unintelligent, goverment's asisistance comes in a range of subsidies such as schooling, housing, transport and medical. Many families in other contries have to pay for private schooling for their own children because the state schools are not trustworthy. Singapore's schools are trusted. Private schools charge approximately 3500 for the elementary level. Our transport is similarly subsidised as Scandnavian countries who has to first charge their people 50% taxes in average. Our maximum tax rate is currenly 18%, most pay less than 15%, that's reasonable. City housing in Europe which is nearly 100 years old cost the same as our new condos here, but private apartments in Scandinavian countries do not come with a pool and facilities. Just a gate for you. And don't expect security either, it's a DIY self service country. As for medical , this is the fun part, one takes up to 2 months to see a general practioner in a polyclinic and you have to wait for days at an emergency room in a hospital to see a doctor. We have reachable polyclnics, HDB clinics and private clinics supported by the CHARS system. That's another form of subisidy.Before you say that our goverment is uncompassionatem pls look at how we have been living versus how others in other countries have been living. It's not just about the low wages issue here, but also the range of subsidises we have been receiving. You don't sound like a well travelled person to me Mr. Blue, you don't have to believe me and I couldn't care what you have to say, these are the facts and the truth hurts doesn't i? Sorry to disappoint you, our goverment isn't doing a bad job as you would like to perceive them to be. And Singapore does not suck.

Is Tharman's depiction of a strawman's argument accurate? I don't think so. WP is arguing for a balance (or a re-balance). Secondly, "monopoly of compassion"? - Tharman seems to speak that into existence when in the first place there wasn't. Mr Tharman - please ENGAGE with the issues and not try to tar your opponent. Your opponents' flaws will be exposed when the weakness in their arguments is exposed. Using mud-slinging techniques work against your own party!
