democracynow.org - In her first television interview, we speak with a woman who helped topple Harvey Weinstein and expose his rampant sexual abuse but has remained largely behind the scenes until now. Lauren O’Connor was a literary scout at the Weinstein Company who worked closely with Weinstein. In 2015, she penned an internal memo about her boss that would later become famous. In it, she wrote, “I am a 28 year old woman trying to make a living and a career. Harvey Weinstein is a 64 year old, world famous man and this is his company. The balance of power is me: 0, Harvey Weinstein: 10.” This memo was later leaked and would eventually become the bedrock of the 2017 New York Times investigation that first exposed Weinstein’s decades of abuse. Lauren O’Connor tells her own story for the first time in “Untouchable,” a damning documentary about Weinstein’s abuse of power through the eyes of the women he targeted, that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday.

She mentioned that scenario to demonstrate how he backhandedly targeted young women. Using plausible, legitimate reasons for using a network of young women in his employment to complete small segments of his evil scheme so not a single person would know his ultimate goal and evil intentions. She was told a very plausible guise for getting that young flight attendant’s number. She had no idea that he’d do anything but hire her for a future flight for being good at her job.

Can you imagine the courage it took for this woman to do what she did? She could have just as easily walked away... told a few people in private.... tried to help Harvey's victims as individuals while protecting her job... or done nothing. Instead, she torched her career, and her life, so that other women would be heard and other women would be safe. *She was already fairly safe.* She took this burden on solely in order to do the right thing. This is what a hero looks like, ladies and gentlemen.

Once you go up against huge wealth and power it becomes murky and complex. They have the money and lawyers to destroy you even though they've done wrong. You have to lawyer up - debt which will take you forever to climb out of - and your lawyers talk to their lawyers and the inevitable conclusion is the wealthy wrongdoer pays you and you sign an NDA. To fight his lawyers with your inexperienced, affordable lawyers is completely untenable. Eventually, it all comes down to money. Money is power. It took many, many women with the same story, and well-known wealthy, powerful women in their own right, to eventually bring this monster down. It's sad that no organisation is helping her financially. She deserves more.
@ksc743
@ksc743 4 жыл бұрын
@Suvo More it's not even a case of 'taking the money.' There is so much power and wealth involved that you're not even given the choice. Imagine trying to prove your allegations. Did you record and/or videotape all your interactions with him. Did you physically see women being abused and would they corroborate your narrative. By the time you got all that together you'd be millions of dollars in debt to your lawyers. Your family and friends would be dragged through it as well. It's a classic case of the abuse of power and criminals shouldn't even be allowed to have the option of hiding behind NDA's. The law should be changed.

Think, and think hard. Their house, their rules. These men have a lot of money and if you think that they are going to prison. Pigs have a very chance of flying before those men go to prison. What are 4 or maybe living in some fancy world? They will not get punished, they never have. How many cases did we hear, how many have been charged? @Fic9 walk in someone's shoes before shaming them. Watch all the interviews with Weinstein's victims and staff, then comment. She wasn't the only one too afraid to speak up. The amazing thing is that she did. She could have resigned without ever saying anything but she spoke up and now finds herself in a position where people - like you, judge her without ever having met her. I had an abusive boss in my 20's but he wasn't famous and certainly nowhere near as sexually abusive as Weinstein but he was disgusting. I resigned and got the hell out of there. To be the first person to lodge a formal complaint about someone as powerfully abusive as Weinstein in the environment they were in takes guts not many people have.

Thank you, dear Lauren O'Connor, for speaking up in 2015 and for continuing to do so. There is much love and appreciation out here for you, and for those who are standing up with you. That would be from fellow victims of such abuse, and just any human who is connected to their own heart. Blessings to you in your healing journey. And thank you, Amy Goodman, for continuing to bring these courageous women into these on-camera dialogues, in order to keep the focus on this critical issue of the imbalance of power. This intelligent conversation really helps to show how complex and deeply-embedded this societal pathology truly is. And, it will take serious, ongoing attention to help dislodge some of these 'norms' of male dominance and abuse. It exists on every level of every society around the world, because they are all still patriarchies. We're beginning to finally pull the curtain back and expose the ugliness, and insidiousness of these deep-rooted beliefs of entitlement for the male gender. And women, like Lauren and Amy, are so essential in moving this issue forward. Thank you, again!!

LEGIT SAM 6IX While I agree that many men have wildly warped sexual perspectives and often senselessly project them on others... You do not need to hold such bitterness toward all men. I was attacked when I was 17 years old by a very large male family friend, who I (and my whole family) knew and trusted deeply. I fought very hard physically. It was premeditated. He had me come over to his house for a “surprise party”. All of the cars were parked down the street so the “surprise wouldn’t be ruined”. I entered the house and everyone was “hiding upstairs”.... Luckily, he did not end up raping me. He actually just stopped what he was trying to do and started sobbing and begging for forgiveness. I still can’t believe that ever happened. You never think it will happen to you... you just hear stories... Him crying and apologizing did NOT make him attacking me okay. It DID make me re think my relationships with EVERYONE and to this day, perhaps I am a bit more paranoid than I would have been otherwise... but for that I thank him. He is far away from my family and I now, and will be forever. I am SAFER now, and so are others. I have also been married now for about two and a half years to the love of my life (an amazing man) who I have been with for about eight years. If a man ever tried attacking me again to the point where I fear for my life/grave bodily harm, I will implore my second amendment right. There are lots of evil men *and* women in this world. The best we can do, is to it join in on the evil and/or let the evil force negative change in us towards others... because then, evil wins. Anyway, sorry for the rant. All the best! 💕 😇

I believe from her interview, that she does definitely feels that she was being utilized to assist in what was happening. I think this was why she couldn't keep silent about what was going on and sent the incident to HR. Personally, I don't feel she was accountable for someone else's abusive actions. Being asked to do your job duties for position and fulfilling your profession. I don't think that makes her responsible. She did wrote the memo to HR. Large corporations have so much power in covering up and burying allegations. This by no means dosn't only happens in large Corp, smaller businesses and other workplaces. To make this type of complaint, you need at least some documentation and information gathering that takes time to do. And to do it without get caught doing it. Also, She knew she was going to have to hold her ground, pay legal bills, and possibly never being employed in your field. And your mental health. I am glad that she knew that possible and very real risks was involved and also having the insight to ensure that she needed to be diligent about taking care of her mental health. She could have found another job and walked away without a peep. She decided to stand up and speak up. Huge respect for her, huge respect.

So interesting that this woman starting "hiding" her evident beauty around Weinstein and wasn't fully conscious of why she was doing it. I think this is what happens to most of us. The left side of the brain really wants the job, the dream job, the connection with power. The right side of the brain knows and feels the danger and takes action. This happened to me at Time Inc. in my relationships with some high-up executives. watching her near tears as she retells weeping in a parking lot with a burner phone worrying about telling her parents is super telling: the shame (unmerited), the anxiety, the financial toll (therapy, travel, legal expenses). It's terrible. Harvey Weinstein should be paying these women's costs, may he rot in jail forever. Bravo Lauren O'Connor. That thing this woman describes as hiding: I’ve done that. It began in a work place where I worked lots of late nights and long hours and eventually learned that I felt unsafe. Stopped wearing makeup, stopped wearing heels, stopped wearing skirts (after I noticed one senior coworker 3 offices down from mine eye me, after he’d made some late night calls to my cell phone), stopped smiling or being friendly to everyone. I can’t pinpoint the specific events that triggered this, or how fast this all happened, but it’s a defensive instinct.

What I realize watching this woman talk about her experience(s) is that when you are recalling traumatic events you will blank and "forget" periodically because there are things you don't want to deal with, because they are too disturbing. So you might not come across as "smooth" in "remembering." Trauma causes fear and hesitation, in its reliving. She is actually very articulate. Amy Goodman is a legendary journalist. I am so happy to see her on KZfaq, being so public. She's a brilliant interviewer. She should replace Charlie Rose.

I have a lot of experience with men like this. If they are doing this in a public place surrounded by lots of ears, I face up to them, get close to them, and say in a loud voice: "NO, I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH YOU AND STOP ASKING ME" If they dare to fire me, I have a lot of witnesses, as well as cell phone audio. If this is in a private location, I relax and act as if I'm compliant, and get them close enough to poke their damn eyes. I never understood why women are afraid to hurt their attacker. I used to work in the hotel industry, and many chefs have an overblown ego just like Harvey did. Restaurant jobs were a dime a dozen so I was not afraid. Also, both my father and stepfather were the reasons why I know how to defend myself. they were just like the rest of them. (My mother had great taste, huh?) Besides, I have all sorts of weapons hidden in my purse and all over my car. Yes, women have to put up with this crap constantly. I'm 70 now but stopped dating when I was 50 because I was tired of having to defend myself against narcissistic assholes.

I await for this to hit nyc finance and corporate culture. I've never really worked in a public facing roles, though I have recently worked in media where a handful of colleagues were public facing. In my personal experience, working in media and human righths did not bring me face to face with abusive men (In finance I was propositiioned in a scary threatening way every 2 years minimum, more like once every 16 to 18 months.) In finance, it was so accepIted, that when I spoke up against an individual older and more established than me (I in my 20s at the time), it was treated as a joke. The individual I was speaking up against, seemed effected and to take a stance, but everyone else, even those that were managing directors and probably knew the details of the HR case, seemed to make en effort to force me into interaction with the man who's behavior I was making a claim against, as if it was entertaining. It's never easy to come forward. He still works there making probably 1 to 2 hundred grand more each year than he was making back then (so he probably advanced from making 150k to 250K ato 350k per year) and I've changed careers and make about the sasme amount of money as I did back then, because finance pays better of course :) So I've not advanced financially at all, though carry their immorality on my shoulders :)

In 1992 I worked for McDonnell Douglas Company as a program manager. My boss at the time was Eugene Barker- Director of Strategic Quality Management. He was scheduling one-on-one meetings in his office during which I was presenting status of the projects I worked on. While I was presenting report, he was sitting in front of me, with his legs wide opened and he was masturbating himself. I was afraid to report him to HR because the reputation HR had was that they would find the reason to fire or lay me off. I told about it to one of the coworkers, who thought that it was funny that this man (mid to late fifties at the time) was masturbating in front of me. Luckily I was able to find job in another department. But the bottom line was, I did not believe I was able to report him to HR because had I complain I would have paid price for it. This type of harassment is happening not only in movie industry, it is present everywhere.
