Watching someone have to manually manipulate the lightning to a single room makes me realize how much work really goes in to a game. Imagine you clock in at 8am and all day you're just tuning and retuning lighting variables for each and every location in the game for a setting not everyone will be able to experience. Then imagine this person being told there will be an enhanced edition but everything can be done by toggling a single setting. Crazy how far we've come in two years.

Actually it's the thing you described - 9.00 you load a single project ( like this room) tweaking it to 21.00 with a constant doubt if its a right setting. The next day is the same, sometimes its a whole stress week on a single stupid scene with tests like in the video. 3D game development is the same as building a Skyscraper on Government money - a very stressful job.

I can imagine. I'm a modeler and texture artist and occasionally do lighting. Digital artists spend hours upon hours tweaking and perfecting our work. Metro was made by a team who clearly loved their work and had great passion for the project. In my personal work, I'm used to using ray tracing and GI in VRay renders which take a very long time to calculate (two hours for my last project) and that was just for a still image. I never thought we'd get real-time light bounce like this. The quality is going to rival pre-rendered cinematics very soon.

Ray Kurzweil calls that an s-curve of progress, if his predictions are accurate (supposedly 86% accurate thus far) these will happen more and more where you will have lulls and then larger and larger leaps in progress each time. Politics and other factors can inhibit or accelerate progress, but his arguement is that it happens regardless as this is an exponential effect. He wrote a book called "The singularity is near" in 2005 ish, and has another book end of this year called "the singularity is nearer". So if you continue on for many years, that "2000's" feeling will probably return. Again, if his ideas are accurate, looking forward to see his thoughts in his next book. Which he says has been difficult to write because of the speed of progress.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how they handled the PS5/Series X versions. They promised a lot in their spec sheet, almost to the point it sounds too good to be true. I believe they stated native 4k 60fps with all RT on aside from reflections. I played some of the game on the PS4 Pro and I just couldn't get used to the weird input delay. It's the only AAA FPS game I've played that had such a bad input delay, hopefully that won't be a problem with the next gen ports. Fine aiming was impossible on consoles, no idea if they ever fixed it because I ended up playing on PC instead.

@@arbiter- They never said native 4k, just 4k60. It will probably be DRS and looking at the 6800XT perfomance, I'm guessing it will be 1440p upscaled and lower RT quality. Which I think is fine and great to see the devs target 60 FPS.

@cemsengul16
@cemsengul16 2 жыл бұрын
I think it is really lame that you have to use DLSS if you want to play with Ray Tracing. A desktop 3090 is still not strong enough for Ray Tracing natively at 4K resolution. Nvidia released this technology way too early. Maybe the 4000 series cards might just be able to game at 4K RTX without a performance hit and without DLSS crap.
@gavinderulo12
@gavinderulo12 2 жыл бұрын
@@cemsengul16 this has to be one of the dumbest comments I've read in a while. This is how technology works. You put out something new, this gives devs the opportunity to work with it and build better software for it. And it slowly gets better over time, both the hardware and the software improve. Getting raytracing to run in a performant way does not only depend on the hardware but also more efficient software. Also, native 4k rendering is obsolete, there is no reason not to use DLSS at least in quality mode as its actually looks better than native rendering in many instances.
@JKHYT
@JKHYT 2 жыл бұрын
@@cemsengul16 This game proves beyond a doubt that Nvidia DIDN'T release this tech too early. The visual upgrade provided by RT in this game is so huge, there's really no argument here. DLSS is an amazing tech that is helping to move us to a "post resolution" era, as the DF guys would say. The image quality in DLSS quality mode is great, better than native for a lot of fine details. If you don't like it, you can play at 4K native with no RT features, so what's the problem?

We've all been trained to see very two-dimensional shadows as "correct" in games. Now that global illumination and shadows are being fully Ray Traced, we have to literally retrain ourselves to see this as the correct lighting model. Artists have gotten quite good at faking local lights in a scene, so our eyes tell us that it's all prerendered and drawn by an asset artist. But once you realize that it's all being calculated in real time, it changes everything. It looks so good, that our eyes tell us that it looks weird. How strange is that?

@@jerchongkong5387 You mean this? I very much doubt that this global illumination stuff saves much time at all. Not to mention, do you know how much time devs actually spend on optimizing games to look nice and run well on your PC? This type of RT makes most of that effort moot, because it takes a huge amount of ressources for little gain. For now, real time raytracing is a gimmick. There is pretty much no way around it other than a mod called enblightpatcher which allows you to manually add all light source in your game as enb-lights(which arent affected by the limitation), but it takes absolutely forever and is so complicated. Instead they went ahead with 2.0 & 2.1 and decoupled it from system load to be used wherever the user wants (even low/very low settings). It's also definitely not magic, there's a lot of work from Nvidia in AI & every single thing is actually mindblowingly impressive. Some other comment mentioned how RTGI that sophisticated looks rather off, because we're used to what baked lighting looks like from all those years and I think they're right. In any case, I'm playing this game on a 10600K with an RTX 3070 OC-ed with the following settings at a locked 4K60fps, with dips down to 40 in lush vegetation: Ultra Preset/Normal RT/Raytraced Reflections/Tesselation, PhysX & HDR on/VRS Off/DLSS Balanced. I think Alex's settings will never dip below 60, but I have yet to encounter dips like I've seen them in the benchmark (maybe when I actually visit the Taiga region I will rethink these settings) and I made the tradeoff to see all the next-gen features for the price of some frames in certain situations, which is still considered a technically playable experience by most people .

Okay. I get it now. I haven't seen a justified implementation of Ray tracing since it became a thing, but holy shit this looks absolutely incredible. Completely transforms the atmosphere. Kudos to the devs for putting in the passion to make this a reality. Maybe one day I'll be able to soak this in for myself. Wow.

I have been totally behind it since I found out about it two years ago. Playing RDR 2 currently, and often in shaded areas and indoor areas, the lighting looks quite video gamey, and that can only be solved with ray tracing.

True story: I hit a rough patch during Covid-19, lost everything and ended up living in my car for a year. Eventually I got back in touch with my best friend who had moved across the country, only for him to offer shelter and a place to start over. When I arrived he had a PC built for me with an EVGA 3070 inside and with the steam sale he picked up a few games for me. Metro: Exodus is one of those games. I literally went from homeless to playing the enhanced version of this game in a blink of an eye, due entirely to the kindness of another I could never deserve.

This is the first time I've actually been impressed with real time ray traced visuals. This is a huge difference. I've been telling people for a couple of years that real time GI is where it's at if you want a truly noticeable enhancement to image quality and realism. Someone finally did it to an extent that is truly impressive. This is the beginning of something beautiful in gaming. It looks like this may take the crown for best looking game ever. I think that crown is still presently with RDR2 PC (Xbox 1X/XSX for consoles).
