Peter Brooks Sir, i feel truly awed, to be communicating with, A Man Whose Met Rodney (i'm goanna write a song called that!) When he talks, when he rides, i well-up! i'm 60 and i'm about to buy my first board. i don't even do sports. i'm a musician, and so is Rodney. He makes music, with motion, and understands more about the subject, than i will ever learn. i think if i were ever to meet this man, i would shed tears. Thank you so much sir, for your reply. i would love to hear more. Best t

In my opinion Rodney Mullen is the most important skateboarder to this point in history. To this day skaters are scratching their heads over tricks he seems to perform with ease. Even with such incredible talent in the current skateboarding community, nobody can match him. This may change in the future and if it does, I’ll be watching with excitement!

Rodney is a genius. At about the 20 minute mark it really start to hit. The man's just thinking at a million miles an hour, crafting everything he says. I remember my English teacher telling me that nobody really wrote perfectly, except for Einstein. Idk if that's true but it always stuck with me. And Rodney definitely gives off a sense of that

I can remember when I was about 20 years old (37 now) seeing Rodney Mullen at a demo in Philly. You'd think he'd stick with the other pro's like most do, but instead he was mingling with the spectators and trying to teach these younger guys how to Tre-flip. Awesome dude, all handshakes and smiles no matter who you are or what you look like!! Glad he's part of representing the sport!!

He literally almost retired when street and vert became the two big things in skateboarding as he was skating flat ground/freestyle. I forget who he was originally sponsored by but they pulled their offer and killed his board. Mullen went out there and brought his style he’d been working on for a decade+ into street skating and became probably the most liked skateboarder in those years Hawk video games/skateboarding were ridiculously popular. I mean I haven’t skated in over a decade and I’ve watched 3 Mullen interviews just this week. lol

The way he talks about creating tricks makes me think of the way I create music. One of my favorite quotes _ "Creativity is making mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep." Individual expression, no one standing over you telling you how to do it. It's a bit different now. All these fashion skaters are stopping people from wanting to skate because of the unwritten "rules" creating pressure. For example, we are judged on what we wear, what type of board we skate, how we push and even how we hold our boards. It's pretty hard these days not be be labelled a "poser". This is what I think.. If you want to push mongo, do it. if you want to hold your board by the truck, do it. Be yourself, do what you want and fuck what anyone else thinks. Also stop hating on people who want to take part in other, similar sports.

that element of it has always been there for example tony hawk used to get tons of shit for being a "goofy kid" dominating the contests and innovating what was largely a "punk" sport etc. theres always been rivalry like that created by masses of ignorant people. you might not be able to be the biggest skater on instagram with the biggest sponsors if you dont do the trendy shit but you can definitely still do it. and get respect of those people whose respect means anything. you can even ditch all the standards of what modern skateboarding is and just do whatever you want with it. see: miyagi or tomasello for example.

It’s 2023 and I’ve been watching you for a year. Yes new to me. Watching your style from your youth. , hearing your stories, . Your mothers classic music influences to me is also an influenceinto your effortless motions. I said the first time I seen you, I asked my son, is there a skater that moves like a professional ice skater. He said Rodney Mullen. You and your tube socks and retro shorts knee pads and helmet. Your balance, bunny hops on a board, Your Grace and turns. Is a class all its own. I learned a lot . Alan Gelfand who invented the Ollie. A name every skater boarder should know. Even my son didn’t, who been skating for over 25 years. I think you’re very eccentricjust by nature it’s not a overshadowed personality. Your viewed almost everyday on my screen, and I think I’ve done well listening. . Wish I could skate like that.

The whole thing about how different creative paths are like different families and cousins… I play guitar and its a perfect analogy because you practice what is familiar…and then when you go into unfamiliarity, you “play” what you know. Then all of that familiar knowledge comes into play in your peripheral head space and innovates new ideas…. Dude is spitting deep wisdom. You can take what he says and apply it to anything, business, investing, music, art, life.

It’s not often that some “thing” whether a sport, product, invention, etc that is culturally relevant and had a global impact, still has the inventor or pioneer alive today. Since street skating is such a young sport, we still have many of the early pioneers around. It’s wonderful to see that person speak, and think about their influence. Instead of only reading about them in a historical context. He’s still here and still skating! People who impact a culture and community that meaningfully only come around every few decades.
