Execution of Josef Kramer - Bestial Nazi Commandant of Auschwitz-Birkenau & Bergen-Belsen Con. Camps. Josef Kramer, an only child in a middle-class family, was born on 10 November 1906 in Munich, then part of the German Empire. His parents, Theodore and Maria Kramer, brought him up as a "strict Roman Catholic" and in 1915, the family moved from Munich to Augsburg, where Josef completed elementary school.
In 1920 he began an apprenticeship as an electrician but from 1925 to 1933, except for working in a department store and as an accountant, he was mostly unemployed. During this time Kramer still lived in his parents' house and when his father also lost his job during the Great Depression, the whole family fell into economic hardship.
It was Germany’s economic collapse during the Great Depression, beginning in 1929 that most contributed to the Nazi Party’s success. The crisis resulted in widespread unemployment and poverty and also led to an increase in crime. The resulting anger and fear left the Germans vulnerable to arguments from both the extreme right and left. One such German was Josef Kramer who joined the Nazi party in December 1931 and the SS in June 1932.

I’ve noticed that the Kommandants of the camps had one specific thing in common: they were always professional failures prior to becoming Nazis.

I have noticed the same thing. Many of the nazis who reached high office had been under acheivers prior to joining the nazi party, including Hitler himself.

When Richard Dimbleby died fairly young, The Beeb put out vinyl collection of his most arresting broadcasts. The one I can still recite from memory, was his entry into Belsen, with the liberating soldiers. It still has the ability to make me cry. Still informs my politics to this day.

Watching this sickens me to my stomach. Many of my close friends are Jewish, and like my father, their fathers also served in the armed forces during WW2. My father served with RAF Bomber Command, and it is some consolation that after the war, certain parts of Germany required significant reconstruction.

What happened to the Hungarian collaborators after the war, were they tried in Nuremberg as collaborators of Nazi regime or did they escape trial? Anyone here knows what happened?

Many escaped via the Rat Line; many were arrested by the Soviets. I believe I was told that the Soviets were happy to arrest and slaughter any Arrow Cross members they could find after putting local Jewish members of the Communist party in government in 1946. By 1952-53, the Sovs began trials against all the "many" Jews who had been party members (as all the non Sov parties wouldn't allow Jews as members and accused them of all kinds of mayhem). This happened all over the Eastern European in 52-53. But that stopped in 1953 after Stalin's death. I live in Australia, married into an Australian survivor family and worked with holocaust legal work so Ive heard of someone seeing an alleged Arrow Cross man (Hungarian genocide criminals) but they mostly want to live peacefully. There is a Romanian criminal I've wanted to find; he was a teenaged boy who used to use babies laid in lines to practice his motorcycle stunts, like Evil Knievel. While he could still be alive, as he was only 15 in 1945 when the Red Army invaded, we've not been able to find head nor hair of him.

Then you should probably read the Belsen Trial and the transcripts of the big Auschwitz trial in Krakow which report on the numerous murders and acts of violence carried out personally by him. He only became somewhat compliant when, to his shock, he realized that the rest of the world viewed him as a murderer.
