Fun fact: the neck slimmer can actually be very useful, but not for slimming necks. I’ve used it to help improve epiglottic inversion on patients with swallowing difficulties. It mimics an exercise we perform called the shaker maneuver, but the neck slimmer allows us to add resistance to it.

The body blade and the jawsercise idea (post jaw surgery) are rehab tools that marketers decided would be good for the general healthy population. Like the little resistance bands used in PT, they aren't for overall fitness.

I bought one of the electrified ab belt things when I was like a freshman in high school, so probably 2001 or so. This one you had to apply a gel to the reverse side (to prevent electrical burns lol) and then you strapped it on against bare skin. It definitely caused mild involuntary contractions (more like spasms) but also shocked the shit out of you even with the gel. I ended up throwing it out, not because it didn't get me a 6 pack (it didn't), but because using it was terrifying and painful.

When I was in school to become a physiotherapist I went to an internship in a hospital where they used something like the bodyblade to improve balance in elderly patients with Parkinson's or who were rehabbing from strokes. I made makeshift sandbag by rolling up ankle weights and had them throwing them around. They enjoyed it a lot more and their balance metric improved greatly.

I remember at that time a lot of people implicitly trusted whatever was being shown to them on the TV and there weren't the easily accessible sources of information we have today to counter the crap or to give people good fundamentals. (Without getting a trainer, going to school, finding the right book, getting a gym membership, whatever) So when someone came along and looked healthy and successful, showed their fake clients looking healthy and successful, and selling an easy solution that cost a few bucks and promised to solve your problem without any effort from yourself, people ate it up.

Jawzrsize really helped me because before the age of 13 I ended up having my jaw shattered and titanium plates put in my jaw and I babied the left side for so long yet still was able to build muscle to the point that they couldn't take the plates out when I turned 18 and several years later I came across his video post motorcycle accident and it really really helped me out but it's not for everybody. It gave me the opportunity to be able to bite into an apple without paying it also gave me the ability to yawn without struggle because imagine yawning and your mouth having to have close itself which gets rid of the on and then it comes back and you are in a never-ending cycle of trying to finish it because you can't open your mouth up far enough and the muscles were atrophied enough that it would instinctively clamp down halfway through the range of motion

Oh man I was with this girl a long time ago and we saw a shake weight commercial on tv. I said "who the hell would be dumb enough to buy that shit?" and she told me that her mom had one. I immediately kms.

Recently, I was forced to use a pen for 5 or 6 hours, and I had fucking DOMS for 3 days. I'm a climber. I can dead hang for multiple minutes off of a 5mm grip with 20kgs of gear in a rucksack, and writing with a pen gave me pretty severe DOMS in my hand and forearm 😅 So, to everyone that complains about their ergonomic keyboards, try a pen for a day, then give that keyboard some sloppy apology lovin'

My most fond memory from the 90's commercials are "The Sauna Belt" - which is kinda like a hot electric WWE-belt that you put around your waist to get rid of the subcutis fat and those damned lovhandles.

Something that happens with a lot of as seen on TV products is that they're actually a way for manufacturers making products for people with specific needs to leverage the economies of scale by selling to a wider market while being of dubious utility to the able bodied. By far the largest portion of these are kitchen gadgets where a lot of them are designed around weak grips, poor motor function, etc;

Entertaining & educational...my husband who's is a Physical Therapist rolls his eyes when seeing anything like you're reviewing. There is currently a LegXerciser advertised on later night TV, that actually says "It's like having a Physical Therapist in your home". Yikes.

Mike. I'm laying on my living room carpet and i'm unable to move. I want to thank you for giving me some inspiration to do my leg day correctly. I also have to go and buy a car with an automatic transmission, because i'm physically unable to press the clutch after my leg workout.

I had to use a body blade as part of PT for rehab for rotator cuff repair surgery. It was exhausting on those little muscles in the shoulder...for the first 2 weeks after surgery. After that they dropped it from the plan.
