Running is awesome! (My opinion, after being a Division 1 college track and field athlete, competing in multiple triathlons, and running a marathon.) Running can be good for the soul. The only issue with running is that it’s a very sagittal plane exercise, and over time, that can lead to nagging issues like IT band syndrome, outer hip pain, piriformis tension, etc.
With that in mind, I consider a lower body lifting program to be essential for runners to help balance strength and bring in more planes of motion. I also love a few key exercises to use as a warmup to prime those running muscles! Check out the exercises above for ideas on how to prime your muscles in a warmup and move into more than just the sagittal plane.
