Exhaust Flange Stud Removal with Torch and Air Hammer. Removing frozen, pressed-in exhaust flange studs without damage to flange or exhaust pipes. You can use a propane plumbers torch or a mapp gas torch for your heat source. I used an oxy-acetylene torch in this video. You can also substitute the air hammer with a regular hammer and punch. (sometimes this method bends the flange or does not get the stud out )

Thank you sir. I've been scrolling KZfaq for an hour trying to find out what exactly these studs were and how to get them out. Finally torched the one out, then I found this video and it worked so easily I literally laughed with delight. Didn't have an air hammer but a hammer worked fine. Many thanks.

High heat torch literally just below the gas tank always makes me nervous as hell. Anything that can explode worries me. Heat rises right up to that tank full of gas....

Been going at it for 2 days on my 04 Silverado.. any methods without a torch? Don’t have really much tools to begin with and don’t want to be driving around without an exhaust waking everyone up lol

I feel your pain! The other method that works is to use a socket and heavy duty C clamp. Press on the stud with the c clamp and receive the other end into a socket. Use lube WD-40 or motor oil on the threads of c clamp to increase twisting force. Spray stud with penetrating oil WD-40, CRC, PB blaster, etc. Then use a small ball peen hammer to shock the edge of the exhaust flange while tightening C-clamp. You can also shock the end of the C clamp handle if you use a large C clamp. Another method it a punch or large drift and a medium to large ball peen hammer and try (key word try) to drive out the stud. This method rarely works but can work if you have enough swing room with the hammer. Good luck!!!

@@MechanicSecrets great advice and thank you!! I saw a video with someone using a tie rod puller and it had me thinking along those lines.. I got a decent amount of room to swing a hammer coming from the side.. day 2 with multiple applications of PB blast.. wish I didn’t break the bolts to have more to grab onto but the studs gotta come out regardless to replace w/new aftermarket exhaust.. hasn’t been fun lol may cave and go buy a map torch from lowes but I feel heat to me is the last route I want to take
