Exhaust Head-to-Head: Porsche 991 Carrera (w. Soul PP) vs. Porsche 991 GT3 (w. PSE)

Before I have my Soul Performance headers installed on my 991 Carrera, here's another video in my 991 exhaust series. Part of my desire to add the headers to my set-up came from my recent experience of driving a 991 GT3 which had the factory Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE). As incredible as the PSE sounded on the #GT3, and as incredible as the #PSE sounded... I was left wanting more after driving my 991 with its valved Soul Performance exhaust that's tied into the PSE programming. Say what?! That's right. I think my base Carrera sounds better than the factory PSE on this GT3. Not only this, once I get the Soul PP headers installed it's going to so EVEN better again!!
I know, this is a BOLD statement... a base Carrera sounding better than a GT3...? I'm crazy. Or am I??There's only way to get your thoughts and settle this... let's check it out in this video!! Enjoy.

GT3 was always going to sound better. All subjective of course, but to my ears the PSE has a more ‘natural’ or Porsche sound. Good comparison James.

The crack that the GT3 gives you each time it shifts along with the punch in the back is glorious. The cabin just howls when you approach redline. You can experience one in the wild by taking the 2 day Porsche Sport Driving School 2-day Masters class at Barber Motorsports Park or at the Porsche Experience Centers. But, having said all that, I love the improvement the Soul Performance Exhaust gives the 911. She definitely has a grown up voice now. 🥰

I find there is a greater difference with the valves closed... The GT3 definitely sounds better valves closed... Valves open they sound more alike but I personally prefer the tone of the GT3...

They both sound great , that’s soul exhaust sounds really good , the Gt3 is always going to have a better top end 9000rpm rev out where as your 3.4 is about 7400 rpm ... ether way flat 6 sounds great what ever you can afford...

Both sound great. You may have just edged it valves open, GT3 does sound mega tho. Nice work clipping the videos together for the quick comparisons.

Your Carrera actually sounds delicious James! If you ever get the chance to get hold of a 991.2 Carrera with a Soul PP exhaust I'd love to hear the difference between its turbo engine and your gen 1. I'm seriously contemplating a Soul PP for my 991.2 C2S - and it'll be quite different to your gen 1 of course, but even Soul PP's films sound sweet with it. Keep up these great little films - they're usefully informative.

I think GT3 benefits from the extra top end revs. For me on start up GT3 better, on acceleration tie between two on take off and GT3 scores just a smidge higher on top end revs. From the drivers seat, I imagine the C2 best due to the drama you can’t hear on the other 2 tests. Overall the GT3 just edges, probably because you are hitting the horizon with a bigger smile on your face 😀

The GT3 valves operate differently than the Carrera’s does. Even when switched open, the Gt3’s close until around 3800 rpm. The more “fair” test would be with the valves disconnected so they’re also open.

In the garage I liked the GT3 better, but on the road I am liking the Soul exhaust better.

They both sound pretty good to me. The exhaust on my 991.1 C4S with valves open is great but still not a match for valves open on my Aston Martin DB9 V12.. must do a video comparison. I guess also that, at least partially, the reason why the GT3 generates more horsepower than your Carrera is down to the exhaust efficiency as well as the engine capacity and compression difference. Porsche are experts at creating niches with subtle tuning differences after all..

The GT3 isnt programmed to have cracks and pops where as the base 911s with PSE have that programmed when you are in Sport +. I have looked at a couple of tunes for my GT3 that will give me some of the pops.

If exhaust sound is the metric, stay happy. I would prefer the GT3 in any case as it is a sports car.

At higher rpm and rolling through the gears, the GT3 sounds better to my ears. In terms of volume, I think the C2 is slightly louder and sounds more abrasive but the GT3’s overall tone is better, again, to my ears. For cars that are at the bottom vs the top of the range though, the difference is not as big as you would think!

Sorry - I'll take the GT3 all day long. It sounds like a Porsche. The Soul performance is nice and throaty, but it doesn't have the trademark buzz saw sound that the 991.1 NA engines has..

GT3 - by far. The stock Carrera lacks the brutal character that comes with the GT3 naturally. Once again it’s not the exhaust but the engine that makes the music. Don’t get me wrong - i put a x pipe into my Carrera 4s and kept the PSE. I love it. But I would never try to compare it to a GT3 because it’s simply foolish. Even if you mod the exhaust system with pipes etc. it is never going to be a GT3 or even close to it...

Gt3 sounds tighter and sings at high rpm , also not a fair comparison. Gt3 with an aftermarket exhaust sounds orgasmic ..

GT3 sounds way more like a real motorsports/ racing car. it is the sound of the engine that is portrayed to the exhaust and nothing added. but these days various manufacturers and clients alike seem to prefer all that useless crackle noise, that actually comes from the exhaust itself not from the engine.

Prefer stock GT3 PSE. Has the Porsche high tone whine. The Soul sounds too much like American muscle versus European elegance.

How does your Carrera sounds at 9000 rpm ?? Well it just doesn't ! It just sounds like an angry miata ! Stick a Fabspeed muffler bypass on that gt3 and that trivial debate will be over !
