I have the 3.8 version of this engine. Very satisfying when I dropped my oil pain (which is remarkably easy) and found no metal. I'm nearly to 90k miles now and I send an oil sample off for analysis each oil change.

Ever since Porsche watercooled the flat 6, they've had tons of reliability issues then add the removal of a dipstick on such a iconic enthusiast car is all deal breaker for me. The irony is this 2013 no longer has an IMS yet still suffers from reliability issues. I sold my watercooled 911 and bought a 1982 911 SC and love it so much more.

Hello Finn , nice to see you doing another video again , one thing I didn’t understand was the fact that although the engine was damaged already you didn’t wanted to turn it over to TDC , and one tip I want give is that when want to remove the bearing caps to take out the cams out of these types of engines , you first have to make sure that there is no tension on the cam chains , this is to avoid damage on the cilinderheads !!!
@ManinaGarage

Hello Arnold, i edited it out of the video but these pulleys need a special tool to turn over. Im not interested in spending money on an unknown engine plus I don’t see any value in turning the engine at this stage. How do you remove tension out of the cam chains other than then the tensioner? Have you ever seen damage to a cylinder head as a direct result of not removing tension? I have got mixed advice on that one. Thank you for your help 🙌

@@ManinaGarage There is always a chance of producing a dent in the aluminum of the chain side of the camshaft bearing because of the high tension on that side of the camshaft . I always make sure that tension on the chains is as low as possible , no matter what !!

Great video Finn! Look forward to next few.!... I have a video clip of the engine running before its final shutdown and flatbed to the shop, if you want to incorporate in the next one. To the Peanut Gallery below, this was my engine and can assure you that the oil was changed religiously every 3-5K miles for the past 4 years of ownership. I did take a nice sample for Blackstone Labs to be sent out for analysis but would of expected more oil to come out when you pulled the plug. At the time of failure, the engine had 2300 miles on the oil.
@Don_Eilenberger
@Don_Eilenberger Жыл бұрын
Was there ever a low oil warning? What was the oil temperature? That engine takes 8 liters of oil? And about 300cc came out, and maybe 300cc in the bottom of the pan.. where did the other 7 liters of oil go. If you run an engine with no oil, it's no surprise that bearings will start being destroyed. What the heck happened to the oil? As you said - you would have expected more oil to come out.. I would have expected a LOT more oil to come out, and the sludge in the pan indicates what oil was in there was severely overheated.

Hello Lester, this 991 engine manifested itself into my life due to the need for a change, that change includes a bunch of smaller projects that avoid lifting, heavy wrenching and laying under things. The reason for the delay in videos, the Horse head and the upcoming Kelsey extravaganza (your welcome) is my bloody spinal cord injury. I’ve been in a hard neck collar 24/7 for a few weeks while they figure out another surgery, that might be next week?? . With that in mind I am not thinking very far ahead for these videos, there will also be a bunch where I don’t show my upper body because of the neck apparatus. Thank you and everyone else who came back to watch this video 🙏 There are many more videos already shot and new projects already in the tiny garage. Stay Tuned 🤘😎

Definitely bearing foil, wonder which ones, rods or mains! I bet if you tap the pistons with a soft stick hard enough, you might find one or more of them move. One is a rod, more is either multiple rods or the mains. Also, mains, I'd imagine pulling the FMS and/or RMS would give you an idea if the crank is floating around. Looking forward to more 9A1 carnage, hopefully with salvageable case halves and internals! Head looks OK. On that engine, can you see into the internals through the oil sump, like the M96/97 allows?

@@K1dPhresh1 Thats fair comment. The 996 videos were originally just intended to help me to put the car back together. Once I started publishing them online it turned into something else. Since learning a bit more about KZfaq I wanted to experiment with other formats and subjects. I thought for the casual viewer who does not know any of my other videos, a couple of quick and snappy videos on this 991 engine could be cool. In future i will include more background on short term projects like the 991 engine. My concern is boring people with information that may get in the way of getting to the meat and potatoes of the video. Im still learning 😅 Thank you for watching and commenting 🤘😎

Finn I have a question about an 00 996 cab . I found oil in the coolant reservoir, august 2022. The car had been over heating but realized too late. I dont recallchow well i have maintained oil changes, but and i have driven it hard on highways. Since august 2022 its been sitting since, battery is dead and dont want to run it because I havent the funds to make any moves. My questions to you are, I am not sure if its cheaper to rebuild myself with my mechanic or to purchase a used rebuilt engine? And Also, though it is sitting, do you recommend I drain fluids(engine oil, coolant) from the car? Thank you for your time and all your videos are entertaining and educational. I aspire to reach your confidence and expertise as a mechanic and with the ladies.
@ManinaGarage
@ManinaGarage Жыл бұрын
Sounds like your oil/water heat exchanger. Replace it + O-Rings, flush and fill everything (oil & coolant) and you might be good to go. Do some pressure tests also, just in case. A rebuild by a mechanic seems to often be $20k+ from what people have told me. Its $5-10k in parts and machine work for a diy build depending on what you replace. If you have bore scoring add another $5-10k for machine work and pistons. Used engines are $6-12k. Thank you for watching 🤘😎

@@KCMedia33 the sludge is a result of overheating of the oil due to no oil circulating in the engine. Nothing came out of the engine before he opened it up and only a tiny bit was in the pan. What I don't understand at all is why a Low Oil warning wasn't shown when it got that low.. and that the oil temperature wasn't showing gross overheating of the oil.
