I'm back in Spain, where I'm exhibiting my work for a couple weeks. I still find some time to go out and shoot during two really foggy and beautiful mornings.
After the exhibition, I come clean with a confession I had to make...

Well, I rarely enjoy landscape photography and I find Kenna's work (and Adams' too) quite forgettable as their images are too "perfect". But your work touches me at a deep level. It has soul. Its imperfection makes it perfect to me. It has grit. Also the fact that you are using whatever camera is at hand (small, cheap, older...) reminds me that gear does not matter in the least. What you do sometimes with an older RX100 blows my mind. Please continue what you are doing. Your work is important !!!

It is perhaps valid to note that most popular songs are written around the same three chords. Like hearing, sight is a sense that all us beings share. The way you perceive is different although the notes or the colors are the same... The naysayers are usually those who do not have the the drive to wake up before the sunrise and be back home in time for breakfast, enjoy the smiles of family and friends... You see my friend, they are driven by the urge to say no. You are driven by the urge to live and experience. Keep on..

That that you describe is the hardest part of photography by far. Talent and camera gear matter to a point, but getting out is the real challenge, and to do it often. To be willing to be out there, cold, hungry, tired, and to accept that all of that effort might be for "nothing" as you might come back empty handed. Thanks for your comment!

There is a saying in fake latin something like "nil illigitimus carborundum" which translates loosely to "don't let the bastards grind you down". Keep doing what you are doing - your approach is very engaging and accessible, your enthusiasm is infectious and I like your pictures. I have been taking photographs since 1977, I take them purely to please myself and I still get a tremendous buzz out of it when the light is exciting.

Thanks, Bill! Glad you find it accessible, I think photography should be that way. I love to hear that, that after 40 years you still get that feeling from making a photograph. That's something I hope I can keep feeling for a while! Thanks for sharing that, made my night :)

Everything was already photographed in the past by someone. The moment I saw your photos I felt like they are Kenna inspired. Why not, because he is a great inspiration and maybe idol for many photographers. But everyone has his own point of view to look at things, to interpret them. So no photo will be the same. It's usual to copy pictures you like to learn how the original photographer has worked. That's totally fine, too. I like your work and so do many others. Keep going. :)

Your images are excellent and stand on theyre own merit, ignore the photography snobs 👍. Your iphone image is quite an eye opener both in the image itself and technologically 😊. Clearly you have your own style. And a different one. Not always I think you get the "best shot from a location", specially because you completely stay on your "square HP5@1600" format (again, it is your style) but I respect and keep watching. All of us, "photographer", amateurs or professional, have a majority of "misses" and then we have a "bingo shot" :) You have the courage to expose your job, part of your life, etc. Most of those who critique badly don't even have work to show for sure... Keep going with your work. Hope the best for you and your "dream"! (Your living it) :D

Thank you, Goncalo! For sure, more often than not I do not succeed at getting the best possible shot, but that's part of the game. Most of the images I share here on this channel will never make it to my website, the place I consider my main repository and where only the images I like are posted. I still show them because I want to share the journey, the multiple failures and mediocre images that we get before we are able to make a "good one". Thanks again for your comment!

Dear Adrian, You really don't have to apologize for anything. You don't have to be ashamed of your work either. All photos that are made are made because they have already been made once. Everybody wants to be or become Ansel Adams, just look at how many pictures of Adams have been made by photographers of this time. You don't have to think you're good, I know you're good. And I came to this conclusion by looking at your work. Your view on photography is yours and nobody else. Because of you, I am now also going to photograph square format. That does not mean that I want to copy you or copy your work. No, I think you have convinced me that square format is a nice format to photograph. Let the people who are jealous of your work talk, and enjoy, just as you can, the wonderful moments when you make a beautiful creation again. This is my opinion Adrian, nothing more and nothing less. I think you are a good photographer and enjoy your work. Greetings from the Netherlands, Toine

Regarding so-called plagiarism, there are four major elements to a photographic image. In no particular order of importance, the first is the photographer, second is the location, third is the environmental conditions. I will come to the fourth shortly. All are variables. The photographer's photographic knowledge, experience and life experience are unique. The location can be viewed from an infinite number of positions and can be photographed using an infinite combination of technology (e.g. focal length etc.). The environmental conditions are also an infinite variable. Time of day or night, weather, time of year, historical date, etc, etc. The fourth element is the viewer of the final image, also an infinite variable because the mood, age, circumstance, location etc of the viewer will all have a different effect on how the viewer feels or interprets or merely enjoys the image. The photographer has no control over the fourth variable. Therefore, anyone who accuses a photographer of plagiarism had better have some very compelling, unassailable evidence to substantiate their accusation or be prepared to be regarded as a complete idiot. Ansel Adams photographed some locations that have since been visited and photographed by millions. I feel safe in the statement than none of these later photographers have ever managed to reproduce any of Adams' images because a photograph is an instant in time and time is ever changing. That is not to say that any of the later images are any better or worse (whatever that may mean) than those of the great Ansel but if the end viewer gets pleasure from them does it matter if the later image bears some resemblance to the work of the great master? Aside from this the photographs looked absolutely beautiful displayed on the exhibition walls. (Almost as good looking as the food. 😂) Thank you Adrian.

Wasting film? You only waste film if you either don't capture images or you just throw it away unexposed. I have never heard such silliness. Trolls, I tell you, just trolls with an obvious boring existence.

Hehe, I totally agree. You only waste film when you don't use it. Thanks for your comment :)
