Also just an FYI, several months to a few years later, award shows like Melon, GAON, Hanteo and Yinyuetai have since issued public apologies to exo, admitting that there have been discrepancies in their awards for exo that year. Yinyuetai being the most recent to apologize just this year.

A few weeks ago Yinyuetai (China platform) apologized to EXO and EXO-Ls because of the 2017 award that was supposed for EXO was given to another group. Surprising that it took them 6 years to apologize. I doubt MAMA would apologize for what they did. They're corrupted and still is. I'm glad EXO decided not to attend any award shows after the disrespect by MAMA in 2018. I get that when you say that awards are bought sometimes but for this one, it was fan vote award. Hence the question mark when it was clearly EXO was ahead. I am not surprised that at the last minute there was an underhanded deal to hand the award to other group. Same thing happened with Yinyuetai. They admitted what they did to hand over the award to another group. SM artist still win awards at MAMA eg. Baekhyun, but he just send an acceptance vid and thanked EXO-Ls only LOL.

Fun fact: CJ E&M owns mnet. In 2018 the company entered into a partnership with big hit. In 2019 all criteria for winning awards changed. As EXO was mistreadet like this their reply was:. "they decided who wins" Yes ofc mnet was also disrespectful to artists like covering faces bc they knew company's like yg are going to boycott them, missspell names etc. Even G Dragon did a whole Diss while performing there but what happened to exo that night was topping all of it.... That night a rookie group who was not even in the best 3 voting won best male group that night... Not that they don't deserve that but I hope you know what I mean. Also its well know that mnet was deleting votes and claimed that these accounts are fake even though they are verified. They only give awards to artist if they attend but invite them like 3 weeks before the show. Song of the year was a battle between bts and exo but who got it? Twice.... (with only 1 % of online votes....) they told dua lipa in 2019 that black pink would attend so she can come too and guess who weren't there? I could write a whole list bc this is just a tiny crump of s*** they done.... The biggest problem here is that a certain fandom who won mostly all awards after what happened always uses this as a reason to hate and slander exols and other fandoms which is hilarious because we all know who the real villain is here. It's mnet. BTW the pictures of exols get hurt because of the stuff was true. I saw it too because I seen several lifestreams that day with pictures of bleeding ppl 😢 and taking lights ticks away which is personal proberty is also unbelievably sad... And using their crying the next year to claim it was tears of joy made me real mad when we all know they cried because mnet treated exols that night like this.... Funnily enough Taemin, NCT and Boa attented Mama awards in 2020. So for me the question is if EXO doesn't want to go back there or if SM doesn't let them. I don't know but I honestly give nothing of awards anymore since 2017. They were nominated but honestly I don't want them to be treated like this again. The video failed to mention how for us exols and exo as well that year was the most important year in their career like achievement - wise? Bec around that time, people esp non fans and other fandoms have been constantly attacking them for being old and waiting for them to drop their popularity. So I do vividly remember how intense the months of voting was for exols. We really did make sure exo was at #1 for every single nomination. We were desperate to prove a point. And we managed to do that everytime the pre-show results came out. It was exo all the time. So imagine what it feels like to hear a different artist being announced as a winner, when everyone knew exo was leading the results the whole time, with massive gaps btw.

The thing about mama 2017, exo weren't the only ones disrespected that night. 50% of the artists who attended the mama award were disrespected. I remember Lee Teuk(Super Junior) was online lowkey because he was lowkey displeased with mnet's management

As i know MAMA still put exo solo members in the nominations like EXO SC, Baekhyun, D.O., and Kai got nominated as the best male solo and the best duo for the last 3 years but they didn't come to the show. And if you notice that blackpink, winner, bigbang also made their first decision before SM artists to not go to MAMA.

Didn't expect u to react to this video. After this incident, EXO never attend awards show anymore, they don't want EXO-Ls to suffer. EXO-L even sign petition to Blue House to shut down MAMA bcos of unfair treatment.

The one thing I am sure of is that ppl expected EXO's popularity to go down around those years especially that their military service was approaching and honestly before EXO, most bgs never survived that hiatus as most would disbaned for a reason or an other, those who survived even if they still going on their popularity would drop, take SUJU as an example they r still going but not as popular as they used to be. Now u can say things changed and EXO's popularity still growing even with hiatus, and other grps ar getting the recognition they deserve after going back from military (btob, monstax, 2pm... and many others) So personally I believe Mnet thought that the downfall of EXO was approaching and they decided to side with others, One more thing I don't believe fully in the shaky relationship between SM Mnet cuz their rookies groups still attend the awards and get shows on Mnet or maybe things improved after 2020 cuz we only see that since then.

There's a Short by an EXO-L (i think the account is ExAct_1485 cmiiw) that many awards show of music platforms were giving apologize statement for what happened in 2017. Just mnet not released an apology but i think we (EXO-Ls) didn't need them anymore. It's too late to apologize 🤭🙈

This was a coordinated targeted MNET attack on EXO. Also, EXO decided (not SM who crawled back later) not to attend MAMA again OR other award shows. They have kept to that promise for 6 years. So EXO knew it was aimed at them. This is supported by evidence:- 1- MNET voting manipulation is obvious. They did not even try to disguise it. EXO was far ahead even in the live stream in 5 of the 6 categories nominated and yet only won one. The album of the year "THE WAR". Chanyeol and Punch's OST remains the highest-grossing today -was 59% of the vote on the night. yet the award was won by Ailee "I Will Go To You Like The First Snow" (heard of it?) 2- Seniority is very important in Korean culture - honorifics. By telling EXO to perform in the middle of the show MNET/Mama awards were disrespecting EXO on a very grand scale in front of their peers. 3. -Violence - preventing EXO-Ls from leaving. if it was to prevent EXO-Ls entering the venue that would have been at the start of a show not towards the middle to end. Plus you could see fans leaving the stadium (emptying out) which for a TV live broadcast is not a good look 4.-Yinyuetai (Chinese platform) 6 years later (as per the comment below) finally apologized to EXO for giving an award that was meant for EXO to another group. Thus it was not just Mama who was trying to bring EXO down At the end of the day, MNET/Mama were the actual losers. They lost credibility, and validity in the voting system they were promoting, and viewership numbers have lessened. I am sad about these award shows as EXO is one of the greatest live-performing groups hence so many fans waiting for their concerts.

This was my first awards show as an exol and kpop fan. I spent so much of my time voting for exo and I do not regret it. But during the day, it traumatized the hell out of me. After that, I boycotted award shows completely.

I stopped following award shows after MAMA 2017 for a reason, and many of the events that happened that night and the subsequent disrespect by Mnet turned me off from them. I cannot remember if it was MAMA or another awards show during the 2017 season, but when I found out that a ceo of a company with a group nominated in several categories was on the judging board as a "producer" for the panel (despite the fact that they could've chosen another producer without a nominee to judge those categories), I could no longer trust the validity of award shows themselves. That's a major conflict of interest (and I know all about that since I've had training on conflict of interest); *coincidentally*, after the panel was announced, the judging criteria also was changed to favor the judging panel's percentage in depreciation of fan voting percentage. That's collusion and collaboration to sabotage not only EXO, but all kpop groups nominated. It tarnishes the reputation of the whole award show premise when the industry allows such conflict of interest to taint the judging process. As we've seen for the last few years, Mnet (along with other entertainment entities and music platforms) has constantly had issues with chart manipulation and survival show manipulation. Until the process is made transparent, the accusation and suspicion will always be present.

I remember how everyone (including me) was panicking over the pictures of exols with bruises showing up all over twitter and when the video came out I felt sick. some grown-a*s men pushing, slaping and hitting teenagers and the worst was that we couldn't do anything to help our fellow exols as we live in the other side of the world. never voted for anything related to mnet again and never will, it's the least I can do

This was a big problem for awards shows afterwards because EXO-Ls made up a large number of the audiences.

Actually this happened only to EXO and M net really tried to drawn down the popularity of EXO because they wanted to pave the way for someone else...to do that they needed to stop EXO somehow because even after 5 years of debuting there wasn't any group to surpass the popularity of EXO...most of the year end music shows are watched by South Korea gp and it was a best opportunity to introduce groups to newer fans, which is what m net wanted to stop for EXO...

Its not competition but i do not like how ppl trying to brush them off. Yet industry keeps covering EXOs songs, dances. They priase the song when its covered- but try to ignore the original. Id say its just pure insecurity and jealousy.

The whole thing is yuck. This should not have anything to do with another group or fandom. This was mnet and company being shady, plagiarizing of vcr’s, changing of lineup that day. I can tell you right now everything about SM Entertainment and m-net Mama Awards is real they despise each other it's mostly because the mama Awards try to do something with SM years ago but SM didn't want to do it. As an exol I debated watching this just because I hate this video. Yes there’s some truth but it’s pretty dramatic and reaching imo. At the time exo was sweeping shit across the board and mnet ridged it to give other groups awards which started the beef with SM. There was obvious signs of disrespect on mnets part and exo being SM biggest group got the most heat from them. MNET has a history of mistreating artists. This year, 2017, it seemed like it was EXO's turn. It was pivotal to stopping EXO's near domination of awards and helped other artists use their own successes to push their careers forward. This is no disrespect to other brilliant, hard working artists who did not make this happen. YG had it the year before, leading them to stop attending. Apparently they warned SM, but SM still went in 2017. They then stopped. The violence was more impactful than this shows. It was hard to prove, but at the time, there was lots about it, and it did appear that the MNET staff tried to push EXO-L who were leaving in large numbers back inside. Maybe they didn't want the event to look empty? Who knows. It was also reported that EXO heard about it while still in the show and that was one reason for the raw emotions. During this time, EXO was discriminated against, other companies have admitted to it. The evidence appears to be that MNET did so too. It is a shame SM artists don't appear in MAMA as I think many new western fans use the show to see who they think are the best in Korea, when actually two of the big companies won't even go there so it could be argued it is a false reflection of the industry. On the other hand, EXO had won everything anyway, so why put themselves through the stress?

You’re absolutely right. This whole situation was 20 on 10. I personally didnt feel any type of way during that awards show. They only won one award ……so what?? tons of groups go to awards shows and leave empty handed. Not to mention exo literally swept the MAMAs 3years in a row prior to 2017. I think fans get so wrapped up in awards and numbers that they think if my group doesn’t win anything or if they dont top charts they were mistreated and wronged when in fact that’s just reality 🤷🏾‍♀️. I dont like putting so much merit onto awards because winning them isnt the end all be all measure for success. You can still be a well respected senior group without them. Award shows only exist for bragging rights because nobody can listen to every song/album/artist ever and determine that only ONE is the best, there’s so much great art that its just not possible imo. Take this video with a grain of salt. Exols are very dramatic and take small inconveniences as attacks on the group.
