The filter is not a creative thing. It's there because otherwise the whole video gets nuked for copyright. Even after modifying clips. Some of the ones that got flagged were the background ones with my commentary over them.

The original end of the first movie was also cut by director William Friedkin. Friedkin was known to be a perfectionist douchebag. The original ending was much more positive and clearly states that God won due to Karras' sacrifice. Kinderman and Dyer discuss the events and walk down a street with Kinderman saying "I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship." Blattey was so pissed because that ending was scrapped that he ceased talking to william friedkin for years.

I thought it was blatantly obvious God won without that ending. Karrass found his faith and saved Reagan from the demon. Yeah the priests had to die but they're in heaven, girl is ok. The end. I can see why some thought different and i did read the book after seeing this movie. They def should not have got rid of the conversation on the stairs between the priests though.

It adds a lot of authenticity to the exorcism as well. Exorcisms, at least in the Catholic faith, aren't gestures taken lightly. Due to how potentially dangerous, lengthy, and exhausting it is to all involved. Authorization needs to be granted from the local bishop with sufficient evidence of possession. (Eg. Speaking in foreign tongues not previously understood by the possessed, levitation and moving of objects / things, etc.) Including all medical/psychiatrist routes being explored first. Also, the requesting priest has to be trained in the ritual. So, like in the movie, before a true exorcism was even on the table. They wanted to make sure it wasn't Regan faking symptoms or having actual psychological issues. The idea of a demon wouldn't be touched until everybody was thoroughly backed into a corner.

Oh man, couldn't agree any harder. I just watched One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest earlier today and realized the guy has always been fantastic. He does great voice work, too, of course Chucky was incredible, but also in video games like Gun. Seeing the behind the scenes stuff with that game is fun to watch because it lets you see Dourif and Lance Henrikson playing back and forth. Those guys might have been doing voice work but they were still acting as if it would be live action almost, really good shit.

If you read the book it fleshes the movie out even more. In the book the demon claims he was reading Karras mind, that when Damien asked the question, he was forming the answers in his mind and the demon was picking it up. Everything the demon did was to keep Damien's doubts going, faking being burned by the holy water, and giving Damien ammo to disprove as much as prove its possessed. The demon saw the future. It knew Merrin was coming, it knew Merrin would die and it knew it would possess Damien, hence the line that an Exorcist would bring them closer together. What the demon did not see, is Damien's faith coming back and giving him the power to kill himself and the demon rather than having the priest kill a little girl. To show how good Blatty was at foreshadowing, there's a line when Damien first enteres Chris's house, that he gets an icy feeling but also experiences an "Odd sense of ending."

What i liked about the book was how much more of Father Karras's life we got to see. How his lost of faith made him depressed and tired. It makes his character a lot more human.

I have a suspicion that rather than "taking liberties" with the Pazuzu mythos, "The Exorcist" accepts the Christian explanation of the idols of other religions as either being demons or the delusions of demons.
@Kainlarsen
@Kainlarsen 3 ай бұрын
I have a thought on the issue; What if the gods and spirits of old faiths are affected by human perceptions, and Abrahamic religions corrupted their personas into vengeful, demonic entites? 'Pazuzu' was once the one in the Mesopotamian pantheon, but Catholicism tainted it into what is in the story. That's just a hypothetical, but I quite like the idea.

Today people looks like have a problem with that, so after 2~3 minutes all hell MUST break lose no stop. Good thing I also got used to like slowburn shows/movies/anime, as long they keep the quality of them content.

I never watched a lot of horror movies, it's not a genre that interests me enough, but I did wanted to see some of the classics that quickly come to mind and I started with the exorcist, and for me the scariest thing wasnt the demonic stuff, for some reason during almost the whole movie it felt freezing cold, during the day on the middle of summer. The fact that the movie made me feel like that throught most of it's run time was something amazing, I dont know a lot about making movies, composition, colors or what not, but fuck it that alone made me realize why it became an absolute classic. Definitely one of my favorite horror movies, yeah after re-watching it for the 100th time you don't find it scary anymore but beyond that, you can appreciate a lot more other details in the movie, I love how they don't immediately believe that she's actually possessed by the devil (even the church!!) they constantly say to the mother that she should seek actual doctors, that she should seek other ways, that her daughter is just losing her mind. And that, especially in the religious horror genre is such a treat, it just makes everything hit much much harder

I think this is a rather interesting angle, actually. It’s heavily implied that the Godhand heavily influenced the existence of the church, though it’s never explicitly stated that they created it. The manga makes two solid points, here: 1) that spellcasters are amongst the biggest threats to the Godhand, and 2) that the church’s holy history and concepts are the same as the pagan witchcraft. (This might obviously really bother some of the heavily devout, but that’s neither here nor there) I think the idea is that the Godhand played a long game of gimping the Church, making it so that no one amongst their number could acquire the power to stand up to them, as something the Church has over things like Schierek and Flora is that it can incorporate many, many more people, and turn that power towards even greater things. And the Godhand would not want that.

I was introduced to The Exorcist through Gorillaz as Jamie Hewlett, co creator of the band, is a big horror fan. He’d put Pazuzu in plenty of artwork and music videos for the band, most notably in the music video for Rock It as it’s basically a big reference to the movie.

First movie didn't use jump scares, but 3 has that fantastic one when the shrouded woman comes out with the sheers behind the nurse.

Lee J. Cobb was more than a middle-aged man in the Exorcist. He was already in his 60's and died just a few years after the film was made.

"The Exorcist" (1973) is the most 'intelligently" made film of its kind. I always wished the studio, that released "Exorcist III," could have stayed with its original title, "Legion"...but they figured, "Let's cash in on that 'Exorcist' name," I would have loved it more if it was its OWN identity. Still, it is a great intellectual movie.

Exorcist III / Legion is truly one of the sequels of all time. Stuck with me even longer than the original (or the audiobook of the original read by the author).

The 1977 Exorcist II has only one silver lining in it and that is the background or history of the entity and the priest's involvement prior to the original film.

i thought the exorcist was pretty creepy just because it seemed like a really accurate portrayal of a demon

Yes, google translates mirable dictu as wonderful to relate, but in that context the demon was saying mirable dictu in the sense of “wonderful expression”, meaning it was saying ‘“in time” is a wonderful expression, don’t you agree?’ in mockery.

.... Maybe it's cause I watched it with my brother. Maybe it's because I knew what was going to happen in the movie. Maybe it's some other factor, but this movie doesn't really scare me tbh. Same with the Omen and it's so weird to me. Edit: 7:59 Holy shit I'm not alone!... With Exorcist anyway.

audiences had not yet been saturated with demons and exorcisms in 1973 - i saw it on it's release in a packed theater - never experienced an audience reaction like it since.

Actually, the pagan gods according to christianity are the fallen angels that followed the Devil when he rebelled, so the demon in the movie, could very well be a servant of the Devil. (The Bible is a cosmic horror book and a rule book simultaneously)

I remember someone summarizing this movie like this: it’s a movie about a mother and daughter who don’t really talk to each other. And thinking about it, yes, a child whose parents don’t speak to will lash out and become violent and vulgar, maybe as a means to draw attention. Exorcist takes it further and makes it literal possession.
