It’s more so about how some people aren’t afraid of death or torture. In the end, when you think there is a breakthrough with the crazy guy you realize that’s it all just amusing to him. That’s the profound moment of the film for me.

That last scene where the main character accomplishes his goal and everything he did hits him at once is pretty powerfull. It is the thing i remember the most about "I saw the devil". Saw you mention this movie during one of your streams. Fucking love this movie. It handles the message of revenge in a fresh way I haven’t seen before. Instead of trying to make the villain likable to get the audience to see how bad revenge is, it has the protagonist torture but constantly let go the killer to torture him later. Showing that revenge is bad because it blinds us to real justice through anger. There is no justice until evil is purged. Perfect movie.

To me the most cathartic part of the film isn't the death of the serial killer, but when the agent breaks down afterwards. I feel as though his mixed emotions after all is said and done I feel a mixture of empathy while still feeling saddened yet at the same time sort of relieved. What's important to remember is that this was never about justice, but one man of a much higher caliber on the subject of inflicting pain and torture carrying out bitter, hate-filled vengeance on one who has wronged him. It isn't justice for the deaths of all of the victims, but for the agent and his personal loss and stake in these transpired events. It was always about him and what he lost, so it's not a heroic deed. It's because of why what transpires occurs that makes me appreciate that the agent's ending is so bitter-sweet with emphasis on the bitter. As he cries and laughs simultaneously, it illustrates just how morally grey everything has been and in a way we as an audience can join in his grief mixed with a letting go of all emotions he is feeling, both the relief and the heartache. Being able to see the agent have that bitter-sweet release of various and tumultuous emotions is as much a comfort and sharp pain at the same time to us as it is to him.

Choi Min-Sik's protest to the screen quota reduction was an act of loyalty to his nation and people. He wants to resist the pushing out of films made in, by, and for Koreans by the bland, Marxist foreign product cinema we're currently drowning in. It convinces me he's probably a decent man as well as a fine actor. What decent man would want to see his country sold to the international financial elite any more than it already has been? We all know what that's like.

I guess my big takeaway from the film would be don’t mix enjoyment or maybe even anger into justice. For as cold as Soo-hyun is, the only thing he really achieved by letting Kyung-Chul go was enjoyment. This is a personal interpretation but I feel that in Kyung-Chul’s last interaction with Soo-hyun (torture, fake pleading, monologue) he kind of subverts our expectations and reveals that he wasn’t strongly intimidated or broken by the hunting process. Pain was not ideal for him, and was enough to make him hate Soo-hyun, but it was simply a strong momentary discomfort that he could overcome. His tendencies would remain the same in spite of any punishment. Soo-hyun could’ve inflicted the same suffering (“justice”) by tying Kyung-Chul up in a shed and torturing him for a few hours, but he got off on the hunt just like Kyung-Chul continued to do with his victims. That irrationality cost a lot of suffering and innocent casualties.

this is what an R-rated Batman movie would look like if there was one. grown up Damien Wayne has moved to South Korea, got engaged, found peace in his life working as a police officer after his grandfather passed and then a Korean joker one night chops his fiance's head off. there are many things to love about this film but one for me is the strangeness of unique serial killers lurking about. Korean Joker's got friendly connections with Korean Professor Pygg who kidnaps and eats people and then Korean Joker bumps into more murderers while riding a taxi.

I've always wondered what the consequences will be for the agent after the cut to black. He's stressed his connections throughout the film and considering the blatant kidnapping in public and his superior being so pissed about it, maybe he lives the rest of his life in prison or is forcefully relocated and kept somewhere.

The main character didnt win unfortunately. He could never get completely what he wanted out of the killer. He had no remorse, no fear, no one special to him. Even what he had wasnt enough to take away what mc had lost. I think its a good take on revenge as, "you wont get what you want" no matter what, sometimes you cant get even. Sometimes theres no point in trying to fill the gap with the pain of others

Watched this film when it first came out. Didn't click with me for some reason. Will have it to give it another go, but one thing still pisses me off. SPOiLER !!! Wasn't the killers big plan just to shit to get the tracker out? What was to stop him from shitting it out before? I know that he was tracking him, but he was decent period behind. There was so much that could have gone wrong. And not to mention there are better ways to put a tracker on someone. The spy should have know this.

bloody hell... I don't think I could handle the blood. The violence is fine, but the blood and gore and really cutting into people pushes the edge for me. Still, interesting to hear about the movie.

Fucking love this movie. Saw it at an arthouse theater when it was released and it was a trip. The 360° shot in the Taxi scene is absolutely incredible.
