This is an exercise that takes you through all 12 keys, using a minor ii V i lick, that will help you to be able to hear an altered dominant extension...a triad, based on the flat five of the dominant chord. I like this one because it's melodic and pretty and can be easily used in improvisation while soloing over tunes.

Love your top 25. I'm remembering the Abersold vinyls starting with the ii V I progression and then the playalongs covering so many artists. Good stuff. Amazing how much material is accessible. I spent today on Wes Montgomery and his organist Mel Rhyne. As a bassist, I learned a lot from playing with and observing Mel's deep grooves.

It's been about three weeks since I discovered your channel. It's fabulous!!! Earlier this morning I was reviewing notes I took in April 2001 at a series of Barry Harris group piano lessons in NYC near Lincoln Center. You and Barry are both bebop apostles and teachers, but you have the advantage of being very computer literate, which makes your generosity immensely more effective and efficient. Thanks so much!!!

This video just popped up on my youtube feed yesterday. I've been working on soloing over minor 2 5 1's on the vibes and I always leave the practice room scratching my head because I don't like some of the notes I hear...particularly over the 5 chord. Plus I struggle with all my choices (melodic minor, harmonic minor, half whole, ugh!). I do like this exercise because it focuses hearing these notes. I'm playing 3rd's and 7th's with my left hand mallets and the melody line that you demonstrated in my right. Only through 6 keys so far. Thanks for the exercise

Firstly I would like to say that since finding your channel my musical ear and understanding of harmony has really developed, you have inspired me to learn to sing! Secondly: I realized this when practicing the dominant chord used in this exercise (7b5b9) - that this chord is special as it is made up from the 2 dominants that are a tri-tone apart, the only note omitted is the natural 5 which would render the chord a 7b9#11, a truley bi tonal chord as the a 'dominant 7, flat 9, sharp 11' is exactly that but in both keys a tri-tone apart!!

Aimee, I have found your KZfaq and Rick Beato's KZfaq channel to be the best/most interesting to me in my mid-life crisis as I try to figure out what I will do next with my life. I used to be very involved in music in my mis-spent youth, but went into medicine instead (good news for everyone, because I was not that talented). It could be music again. Anyway, your recent video on All the Things You Are (my favorite tune from the Great American Songbook) reminded me of various other tunes that use the descending Dorian scale licks, including "Happy Heart" from the 1960's (Andy Williams, and Petula Clark, in separate recordings), and "Tijuana Taxi" by Herb Alpert, among many others. Keep up the good work and I will find a way to support you on Patreon or whatever. Remind us how to do that.

I think this is pretty hard to sing, however, I keep telling myself it is just a major triad but it is still difficult but a great exercise. Also, I do a similar exercise with the resolution to a major chord. ie Dmi7b5 G7b9 Cmaj7 raised 3rd voicing low to hi DAbCF move C to B then to CGBE then move C to C# gives new minor7b5 and repeat giving new resolution 1/2 step down. Thanks for the great lessons.

I love how you're using some of the same language that i heard while I was taking Classical lessons in Louisville. That's where I switched from Classical to jazz - in Louisville....polished my skills in North Central Ohio. Your explanations are such a welcome, warm sound to my ear. I'm from the Louisville area, so I'm getting alot of the Jaime Aebersold teachings..... In my playing (on keyboard) I like to stick in, what I was told were called, "Tritone Pairs" on altered 7th chords. For example, A flat & G flat chords on top of a C7 altered chord (built on the tritone triad and then "plus one" up to the flatted 5fth. I do a bit of this on this song.... soundcloud.com/damian-dane/you-brought-a-new-kind-of-love-to-me

Hi! Interesting! I'll try... In classical music, I think the second chord is called "sixte napolitaine" (in french... I don't know the name in english) because it's often written in second position (6te) and maybe because it had success in Napoli in the baroque era. The chord would be in a way a II moll major (for the first example in C minor, the root would be D moll). There is an example quite in the end of a youtube's video called : " Ex. 165 partition, Guide de la théorie de la musique, Abromont, sixte napolitaine ". It's written N, and can take the place of a II, or be added to. I don't know other uses of it. ..........??????????.......... I like your videos. Subscribed.

Hi Aimee, First of all thank you for all the material you share here !!! A simple question, why do you hit Bb on your C minor chord ? You are out of the minor melodic scale which I thought was the minor reference, sounds strange to me to put a Bb in a 251 minor context ? Am I a fool ? Thanks again for all !

@@AimeeNolte hey ! Thanks for your answer ! I saw the video you mentioned but there was no answer to my question...😰 My point is you "can't" put a 7th minor on C minor when you demonstrate a 251 minor...it's quiet confusing for me. When you play Solar, you are in c minor, you don't hit a Bb on your fist C minor, right ? You play the sixth (A) or the major 7th. Do you see what I mean ?

i love your stuff, Aimee, so just to clarify this is a serious and respectful question. it seems to me, and i am not sure there is a way around it, that some jazz pianists, even professional ones, that are great at memorizing this kind of thing that they then use in improvisation, but without individualist creativity or feeling, and then they end up sounding like rote jazz pianists as opposed to creative improvisors....interested in how you feel. maybe the simple answer is that creativity is a rare thing, and as the ornette song goes, beauty even rarer. with recordings we get so used to the greatest of the great, that its an unfair comparison. But. there are times I hear low level amateurs, who, to the limit of their technical skill, play with feeling and swing, and then there are technicians , with all the what i conceptualize as math skill, and you get this in classical plenty, who just play and it all almost the same...Thank you

I am experimental musician from Pakistan live in Canada, i never learned music from any one, but as you might know Indian Pakistani classical music has kind of no concept of chords, so long tome working with these classical musicians. got my ears quite tuned. any way the video was nice. I do fusion music, mixing rock and jazz stuff together.

You play well but you dont explain what you play. Why? I like other people's videos that show where your fingers are.
