Everyone's seen ads for those shrinking garden hoses, that shrivel up into a little ball when you're not using them. And millions of people are buying them. But have you checked some of the reviews posted online?

A commercial grade rubber hose will last 25 years of regular use. Bulky and heavy..yes, but will deliver the volume of water for any need. My experience with the expanding and the spiral metal hoses is that you're lucky if you get 1 year of regular use from them, and the inner diameter is too small for many situations.

The problem with these hozes is that when the nozzle is closed and you open the tap, the hoze expands perfectly and looks like you'll be getting good water pressure. However, as soon as you open the nozzle the hoze's shape collapses and retracts considerably. So not only do you lose the working length of hoze, you lose perhaps over half the potential water pressure. They're clearly not adequate for their intended purpose.
@brucecook502 Жыл бұрын
That isn't the problem that all of us is happening because I know exactly what you are talking about. I still got great water pressure from my hose All Summer Long, even with the pressure being a tiny bit inconsistent because of this that you mentioned, all of a sudden now there's barely any pressure going through it at all where before I was getting just as much pressure from this thing as the old normal rubber and plastic hose I was using before.

Wrong... They are ALL like that.. The only difference is time. If really lucky might get a year out of one of them - Brand doesn't matter. They are all made basically the same way. The death of them comes from abrasion of the outer sheath (rubbing over concrete for example) and/or if your static water pressure above 60 psi is an unfortunate aneurysm and the demise of your $40 on this junk.

Thrown 2 away, the third one burst 1/2 pex fittings with a hose clamp will get you going again. The part that holds the water looks like surgical hose and the cloth material is supposed to keep it from puncturing, the problem is the cloth will wear quick. Even if the expandable hose doesn't break, isn't it inconvenient having to let it expand every time you want to use it and retract it every time you put it away? That would be a huge waste of time if you simply want to fill a water jug or spray plants close to where the hose begins. A standard hose on a reel caddy sounds so much easier... just pull out the length of hose that you need, turn the water on and you're set!

These types of hoses have been offered for sale in the UK for quite a while, and we're a nation of *very* keen gardeners. I have only seen about one or two of them in gardens around here, which suggests to me the overall design probably doesn't meet the standard expected by British consumers. To be honest: These are a thin rubber hose inside a nylon sleeve, and the main function of the sleeve is to limit the maximum diameter (Flow rate) of the rubber hose inside. After a number of uses the seam in the rubber hose will split through natural fatigue, which looks to be what happened in Daves case. If the main intent is for watering lawns, he might want to consider putting in a semi permanent hose system that would allow him/his wife to plug sprinklers in when they want to use them without more than a few feet of connector hose to deal with. 👍

I got hooked on his style for garden watering a few years ago. I've had some I got from Big Lots that were $10-15 and lasted a whole season, but didn't overwinter well. I have one that is on its third season from Meijer, and has sprung a leak where it connects to the faucet. It is used for the front porch plants, which are watered every day when it's 85+ and every two or three days normally. I have a Zero-G that I got last year for the back yard, and has been working well this year as well. I have to say the light weight, and thus ease of movement with them has been the biggest plus for me. In the front yard, I do have to make sure I water so that a spot near the faucet gets watered last, but not a big deal. (In the backyard, I have it connected to an irrigation system, so I can turn it off, and it drains on it's own schedule. I am ordering a repair kit today, which as I remember from my initial research can repair up to three, so I should be good for this year.
