Josh from ExpatsEverywhere sits down with Jim, a lawyer from the US, who decided to move his family to Portugal. Why did they decide to move? Was it because of money? Was it for a better work/life balance? He explains the reasons for moving and gives insight as to what that move was like with kids. He and his family live in Lisbon and have found the adjustment period difficult. Yes but he's a typical American, telling the solicitor to charge more. He has to learn there is more to life than extracting as much money as possible out of people. Some people know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

About the lady on the ground floor, I might help, usually old people or long time residents are paid by the landlords to keep the building clean as a sort of gatekeeper, or porteiro in Portuguese. Sometimes, for an agreed price you can pay the "doorman" to take your trash outside aswell, they usually do this to get some more pocket money, life expensive for many people. I don't know if this is the case but is something similar for sure as she is in the ground floor. Is also typical to give them something in Christmas to show good will! Is not mandatory of course, just be sure to tell her you don't need her help :)

About the language… turn on the tv and watch portuguese tv, at least the news, get use to the sound, words, expressions… I’m portuguese and I say this because my oldest daughter learned english by herself before going to school because she watched cartoon network for hours everyday so I guess it will work for any language 😅

Agreed. We have a lengthy commute to take the kids to/from school, and I listen to the portuguese equivalent of NPR when they aren't in the car with me.

It's so interesting to hear both the similarities and the differences experienced by those of us who immigrate to Portugal. Thank you for sharing. With regard to carrying around your passport, in the car for example, I have always heard that it's sufficient and safer to simply carry a notarized copy of the cover page.

Portuguese police is not super strict. You will always be given an opportunity to present your documents later for a small fine.

Some good advice… plan for the unexpected, or don’t plan and accept the experiences as they come. The most important thing is to remember you are in a new country! Expect nothing to be the same and if it is, bonus! A go with the flow attitude is best. Allow for things to take time. Get a bed and a table and a chair… and a bucket (in case there is no 💦 water)

@@ExpatsEverywhere I just wonder why people want to move to another country or continent to try and get the same as they had at home. My motto (for life) has been 'Life's an Adventure - Embrace It' but for those who are fearful, but willing to give it a try, I salute them and just try (gently) to encourage and remind that if it's not going to kill you... you will make it through. It's all about mindset - SERIOUSLY!!

Best advice: learn the language before you move. There are numerous language schools in the Lisbon area that offer online courses and of course regular classes in person once you arrive. Continental Portuguese is different from Brazilian Portuguese. Also, there are private bus companies that transport kids to the various English language schools in the Lisbon area. Enjoy the process of settling in!

All due respect Gloria - that's not a realistic possibility for most people. I spoke with another parent just a few days ago who works at the US Embassy here and was given full-time language classes for 6 months before they moved. She knows more than us but is by no means fluent (her comment, not mine). Learning online in America is WAY different than learning here where you can practice with locals everyday. Also, European Portuguese is one of the hardest languages to learn next to Mandarin Chinese.

Maybe because you have not try to learn hungarian 😉 i think hungarian is the second hard language in the world. I speak spanish and though it is some differences in prounance and writing but much more similarities literally same words. I can totally relay on my spanish language if i only have to read! Whoever speaks Spanish/ German/italian/french/ will very quickly learn Portuguese 😊 but without too. Update: sorry hungarian language is only the 5th, japanase, arabic, korean and chinese is before it and Portuguese is not even in the first 10 hard languages 😊

Excellent and informative! Picked up a couple of tips, particularly about involving a lawyer in the leasing process for the first year. We are not, however, beholden to Lisbon as my wife is Brazilian and speaks Portuguese, so it might be a bit easier. we'll see. Love the channel.

That's easy. It's a pain in the butt and very expensive. If your animals are more than 70 lbs (with the crate) you will have to get them shipped.

Great interview. Just finishing up week two after having moved to Matosinhos. After our third unsuccessful trip to Finanças we were talking about what a booming cottage industry a fixer could build. Definitely trying to identify certain cafes and shops to regularly visit in hopes of developing relationships. Really like that idea.

I wonder it may be feasible to extract more information and post a different video without even mentioning him for privacy reasons. Maybe you can start doing short videos for the recent case studies: - His and his wife's age brackets? - Ages of their kids? - Which school, how much? - Which car, how much? - Which neighborhood, rent? - Who is his lawyer in Portugal? - Which bank they are using? etc. Thank you for your consideration

Hi Jacob, My wife and I are both in our 40's. Our kids are 3, 5 and 6th grade. We chose an American international school outside of Lisbon. We bought the cheapest car we could find that would hold 5 people at Santogal Used Cars in Lisbon. We live in Campo de Ourique. Our rent is cheap, but that is reflective of the apartment and lack of amenities. We were rejected from 3 places before we got this one - the rental market was tight, especially for Americans trying to get a place on video calls. Lawyer is Rosário Vital from Relocator Portugal and we bank at Millennium. However, Millennium will no longer open accounts for Americans who don't live in Portugal. We used Bordr to set up our Nif and bank account (using J&K's affiliate link) - and highly recommend them.

Josh did a great job on this interview! 35 euro for the electric bill for family of 5 seems low. Our friend and her boyfriend live in Lisbon, their electric bill was more than 35 euro in the Summer, they don’t have AC. The lawyer fee for finding his apartment is ok.

It seems low but it’s doable. It all depends on the appliances you have and how much time you spend in the house. However, any monthly bill comparison will be tricky. There are different providers, and different kind of contracts that can affect prices based on the time of day. Under some extreme circumstances you could even pay almost half the amount if you had a different contract and adjusted your consumption habits. Another thing that makes a comparison tricky is that what you pay in one month doesn’t necessarily reflect what was consumed during that month. Electricity providers don’t have real time access to your power consumption (at least not for the majority of the population for the time being) and only read each house meter a few times a year. This means that many monthly bills will be based on consumption estimates or show a correction for whatever difference there was between previous estimates and real consumption.

For example, out of curiosity I discovered that the price per kWh in Portugal is probably more expensive than in the many places in the US, though the final bill could be smaller because of smaller surcharges and because house appliances in europe might be more efficient or simply used less often.

Interesting interview. You can tell he's a bit stressed, for good reasons, considering some of the logistical and financial pressures they have at the moment. Crazy question but I know how to install a P-trap and do all of my own plumbing in my home in the US without permission. Can I just slap a P-trap on? You can usually put them right back how they were.

I agree with the idea of a stronger community focus but keep in mind if you are coming from the U.S. and your neighborhood wasn't full of fences it will be an adjustment. I love the privacy of the fence/trees/hedges of the home we are renting but it also doesn't allow for easy relationship building in the neighborhood. The dogs barking at you while walking down the street also creates a barrier for conversations. The local cafe has helped with some relationship building. It takes time...

The portuguese are usually somewhat reserved and not necessarily interested on being friends with a neighbour. New relationships often take some time to build unless you make some extra effort and find a common interest or activity.

Instead of going to Madrid to get a stamp, you just need your letter that you have your SEF appointment with you at all times. Just print out the letter, EMAIL from SEF stating your appointment date. Although Madrid sounds cool??????Our appointment was 6 months out from when we landed and after we called Sef in Lisbon they said just keep your app. email printed out with you at all times.....We were a bit stressed too ,as we were technically overstaying our visa but , no, not the case. So much to learn.Good luck-----Boa Sorte........I guess a 'Fixer" would be nice .......We can use all the help one can get on this journey as well---wow....what a ride!!!!!! C-N-A

The issue was more that my Wife and kids never entered on the Visa. Evidently it didn't matter. Everyone she talked to from SEF at the airport said they didn't care - she had her stamp in the passport which was all that mattered.

I run my North Carolina based law firm remotely. Lots of attorneys do this. Since I only handle matters in the US and am not in court it is not an issue. i meet with my clients over Zoom. Also, my firm is growing an I will be hiring a US based associate in the coming months.

The number one reason would be possibly losing it or having it stolen (not going to be much an issue in PT but when traveling elsewhere, it can be). Having access to it is important but not having it on you at all time. Does that help and make sense? - Josh & Kalie

Hi Josh, , I was granted a residency permit through a D7 Visa on 14 October 2022, What is the limit to the number of days I have to change my address at Finanças and then apply for NHR? Is there a time limit to when one has to change address with Finanças? I can't seem to find that information. I won't be changing my address with Finanças this year but wondering if there is a cut-off period during which one must change address and thus become a Portuguese Tax Resident.

I could be mistaken but I think it’s not your address in Finanças that will determine wether you are a tax resident or not, it’s the amount of time that you spend in the country or/and wether you have a more permanent place to stay in the country - once you are in the country and have an apartment lease in your name, you might become a tax resident automatically simply because it would make Finanças believe that your intention is to stay in the country.

Great topic Josh. However, I was disappointed that Jim encouraged the local Portuguese lawyer to increase her price and calls her fee ridiculous. Is he not aware of income disparities and the average salary in Portugal? My impression is that the local lawyer fee he paid was already extremely high. He just moved to Portugal and already starts to degrade a local professional on what she charges… I wish him the best in his journey to respect the locals, and to adapt to their prices and customs.

Re: Language Training --- there are many trsined people, also language schools that teach Portuguese online. I myself had 15 months of Language Training with an English speaking portuguese teacher who live in Tomar. VIRTUAL Training is big after COVID.

@@ExpatsEverywhere Well, it's still at the beginners level. I have taken a break after 15 months, twice a week. My teacher came from Tomar and we held the lesson vua Skype. I currently still live in Vancouver, Canada but I am planning to spend more time in the Algarve, or live there I just retired and want to do sthg else with my life. I am very familiar with the Algarve Live it. Have been coming there since 1984. As for language, I knew Spanish b4 starting Portuguese so that helped a lot.

Short answer, yes. There are stipulations with homeschooling. We're not sure if he disclosed how much they're paying. €5-10k is the ballpark of international school fees for Lisbon. A lot depends on age and what school. We pay around €4000 for a private creche for our 3 year old daughter. That includes lunches. - Josh & Kalie

It seems like in this case, it was a basic mistake in filing the documents/application. We've heard/seen of this but it's not common. - Josh & Kalie

@@ExpatsEverywhere No - the issue was that VFS lost my daughter's paperwork and never submitted it to the Portuguese Embassy. Since they didn't have her paperwork, they couldn't process any of our visas. Once that was fixed, our visas were processed in under 30 days. unfortunately, we had already flown over and hence had to return to get the stamps.

My wife and I plan on moving to Portugal when we retire in about 3 years. Will have a couple of cats still and 2 African Grey parrots. Are birds allowed or do we need to find a home for them. Have had them for 25 years but they easily have about 25 years to go and would rather keep them in the family.

Olá. I am Portuguese and I loved this video. I would add that, besides needing a fixer when you live in Portugal, you also need a faxer. No. Just kidding. Nobody faxes anymore, not even here. But that little old lady was definitely trying to scam the interviewee out of 5 euros. She probably has a bacalhau addiction she needs to take care of. Get her some help.

We figured it out - 5€ per month from each resident to pay the woman who comes and takes the bins out each night and returns them in the morning. She also tidies up the entryway. Very informal. The old woman on the first floor collects and gives it to her. We gave her 20€ and paid ahead 4 months.

Hi, I am being offered 45000 euros to work with an MNC in Portugal, of which 30% will be deducted towards taxes. Can you please guide me on below: 1. I plan to move in alone as soon as the paperwork is complete, being from India, please advise if it's sustainable and send some money back to India for my family 2. 1. There are several services that can help you remit money back to India (for pretty cheap) and they're not Western Union. 2. It should be no problem that you don't drink or smoke. Although you will see and smell people smoke outside around you at times. 3. It does not seem right that you're being offer to work for a locally based company on a D7 as D7 is for passive income. 4. People earn more than €1,200/month although you do need to make sure that the job offer that you have is from a reputable company as the salary is higher than the norm and they're "offering" you to move on a D7, which is not correct. That would be a red flag for us.

@@ExpatsEverywhere minimum wage for Portugal is around €740... so people CAN earn more than €1200 but not all does. the average is around €2750 I believe. Kawai, being offered €45.000 is a fair bit above the average which is around €33.000 yearly so not too bad The D7 would definetly be a red flag, sounds off

You haven't adapted until you've learned the language. I'm pretty sure that most people will feel very differently after being there a while longer. On paper, it looks like paradise, but reality is very different Do people ever ask themselves why they make things so easy? Portugueses people seem friendly on the surface, but making Portuguese friends is a whole different story. Crime is underreported. There is plenty of crime in Portugal. All kinds. This is coming from someone who has lived there and speaks the language. I'm not trying to be negative, but people, please do your research before you uproot your families and move to a country without speaking the language and knowing anything about the culture. Portugues people can be very cold and closed. 2 million Portuguese people live outside of Portugal for a reason. Portugal is desperate to get your money in their banks for a reason. Just be careful because there are no perfect countries. Good luck!
