I need to send this video to my dispatcher.. he sometimes has some insane ideas on how I should load my freight when I'm picking up multiple orders that are different in size and weight (like tall, heaviest pallets on the rear, or most of the weight on one side of the box) and I have to explain every single time why weight distribution is important.

when I was in a freightliner M2 daycab, i never had an issue with weight at weigh stations, but it was a problem a few times going up hills because the weight wasnt distributed evenly. Good video.

This helped a lot 👍 just got my class B and I got a job driving a straight truck transporting pallets of wine, the other day I got inspected at the scales and my front tire pressure was over the limit cause I had a full tank of gas and my heaviest pallets were at the nose of the truck, nobody else has a CDL at this company I don't think they know how to load a truck

hi crafty trucker, gt video. am checking out how to load my truckbed hilux. i go offroad camping for extended periods and the suspension guy gave me a 400kg payload limit but, other than saying put the weight over the back wheels, not much on where i should position the load. this may not translate directly but it is still very useful.

thats crazy. Thats why a pallet jack is a must so you do not waste time going back and forth to the customer.

GENERAL RED a two hundred dollar pallet jack to correct loads, no thanks. Load it right and there is no issue.
@modeverything9949
@modeverything9949 7 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying though. Back when I did local stuff we did all loading and unloading so a pallet jack came in handy. In expediting customers load and unload so there is really no need for one. Plus Panther charges extra to customer if pallet jack is required so customers don't want you using them

great video. would it be ok to drive 3 months over the road for panther in a straight truck and take 1 month off? can a single driver drive a straight truck for panther?
@TheCraftyTrucker

Simply Loving The Simple Life Thank you! If you own your own truck yes, if you drive for a fleet owner that would be something you could possibly work out. Yes you can drive a straight truck as a solo. :)

Mr Jason where were you when I had Geometry class? I have to say it again, our jobs are so similar. I don't have scales but my cargo tanks must be perfectly balanced or I can actually twist the hull if it is off. I have actually seen a small ship break its back because of unbalanced cargo tanks. Fantastic job. Have you thought about running for president?

im always leery about these long wheelbase trucks sagging in the middle over time due to the frame length and the weight that has to be carried by the 2 axles alone
@TheCraftyTrucker
@TheCraftyTrucker 2 жыл бұрын
Proper loading is definitely something that must be done. The engineers of the trucks (Daimler) spec these trucks with proper frames to match the wheelbase.

Allison is an automatic trans you referred here as being light no? You are allowed 12,000 lbs on the steers (front axle)? And could you have gotten a 14,000 lbs axle (heavy duty) like you can a Mack truck? I really like that Fed X truck but major bucks to buy that baby lol... You are subject to being weighed by the DOT just as semi's are? Loved this video as I know very little about straight trucks.. Is first I really got to see the Mr. of the team, you both seem like super nice people.. As for me, I love trucks and seeing them, talking about them, old, new. lol I'm not fussy... But as I said before, you have a beautiful truck. Can't you put a separation bar across so that they do not load to far forward? Seems like a real guessing game knowing what is the heavy part of the load, if mixed it's a mixed load, heavy pallets up front and lighter ones in the back, I would assume it's hard to know what to put where as I'm sure the shipper is not going to know. Most those guys are lucky they made it thru school LOL
@modeverything9949
@modeverything9949 8 жыл бұрын
Yes the Allison is a lighter weights trans. The Allison 3000hs is the most common weighing 550lbs. We could go with a 14k front axle but that would put us at 35k gross. Anything over 33k requires a 12% sales tax which could be upward of 20k dollars. That's why the truck has a 12k front.
@SteelyPaw
@SteelyPaw 8 жыл бұрын
wow, I did not know that about the gross as I knew gross played a big part in road tax. I can see where the 14K axle would not pay for it's self, great explanation, thanks. I love learning about this stuff.

Thanks Jason gave me alot to think about. Say I wanted to make my sleeper in my box, would that be somthing you think I could do? An what's the biggest box you can get?
@modeverything9949
@modeverything9949 6 жыл бұрын
Jim Stevens you can do this but I believe there are some regulation to build standard. For instance what kind of force the wall can withstand. Next I would be very caution hauling hazmat materials with set up like that. Any type of fumes could leak into sleep or driving area. Biggest I’ve seen is 30 foot box
@modeverything9949
@modeverything9949 6 жыл бұрын
Jim Stevens I think reason being is in some states max length of a single vehicle is 40’. Some are 45 but to be able to go to all states 40’ would be the max you want to go. 30 for box and 10 for truck
@samja25
@samja25 6 жыл бұрын
Mr Crafty Trucker. thanks Jason, I didn't think about Hazmat regulations, and I wouldn't want to out myself of any loads. I was looking at a freightliner and it was all box it looked awesome. The sleeper was the first 10' behind the cab I'm thinking someone had built it them self, so probably not d.o.t certified. Lots to research. be safe guys.
@modeverything9949
@modeverything9949 6 жыл бұрын
Jim Stevens yea lots to learn. I had considered your same idea with the box. Fuel mileage loss from the lack of aerodynamics was the big no go for me.
@samja25
@samja25 6 жыл бұрын
Mr Crafty Trucker that's been my number one issue with these trucks with all box, not only is a bolt on sleeper badass but super aerodynamic! Anything to save that liquid gold!

I've been considering working for panther but I only got experience in 73 ft tractor trailer. Do they hire drivers out of California, and if they do, are drivers required to travel/relocate to Panther terminals?
@modeverything9949
@modeverything9949 8 жыл бұрын
Not relocate, but you would have to go to Ohio for a two day orientation class. Some owners higher folks from California. Panther does not care where you live. Sure you can use your tractor experience for expediting.

obviously, you need to upgrade your front axle to a 16k or 20k. can you even do that on a straight truck?
@modeverything9949
@modeverything9949 8 жыл бұрын
You can, but the goal is to keep the truck under 33k, 12front 21Rear. Anything over 33k is required to pay a 12%excess sales tax. Which could be upward of 20k dollars. Depending on price of truck.
@Krieghandt
@Krieghandt 8 жыл бұрын
o_0 That'll ding you quite a bit. You'd have to know you were going to get those extra heavy loads before gambling that kinda money.
@modeverything9949
@modeverything9949 8 жыл бұрын
+Krieghandt absolutely my personal thoughts is I doubt I would get anymore runs to offset 20k. It used to be you could buy a new truck 33k gross and after six months add a lift axle and not pay the tax. But they are cracking down. This tax only applies to new trucks though

For fxs sake...if you can't handle the load,don't take it. Quit crying to the shipper. Any truck that can't handle a 1 ton discrepancy shouldn't be hauling freight.
