Airing up and down on the trail is a huge advantage when it comes to both ride comfort and traction in various conditions! There are many ways to air up and down so we want to cover two of our preferred methods when we head out for either a weekend trip or an extended overland adventure.

I am heading to Iceland on Tuesday next week. And I just today finished upgrading my ARB twin compressor with an 10 Liter pressure tank and the ARB pressure control unit. Also I jntend to do 2 tires at the same time. I am so curious what I will experience during my trip. I am travelling on my own with a Toyota Hilux. I did enjoy your videos about the Nordic and of course the Iceland trip. Thanks for the cool content! Karsten from Hamburg/ Germany

Do you balance the fleets tires or do you use something like balancing beads? What do you do if you throw a weight on a low trip?

Curious how the gauge works on the INDEFLATE...once both are hooked up is it just equalizing the pressure between both tires as well to give an accurate reading?

Correct. With the valve shut it completes a loop between the two and tells ya the pressure of the two. sometimes if all but one tire is higher and one is lower, you can equalize them by just connecting them and letting it sit for a sec.

What is it that we need to buy to air down and then back up? I have been airing down one tire at a time and then using a small air compressor to add air into my tires when we are about to hit pavement again. Yes it is old school, but it does work. It just takes longer than we would like for it to take.

I know it’s been mentioned already but I like to elaborate…..deflation does not widen the footprint of the tire….contrary to popular belief/theory the width of the tire does not help you “float” or have better traction…..the LENGTH of the tread contacting the ground is what gives you the floatation and traction and is what happens when you deflate…..just because you see the bulge of the sidewall does not mean you gained width in the tread area….in fact there is only one situation where a wider tire will help and that is in extreme mud/ruts where the width will keep you out of a rut or help you climb out of a rut….there is also the extremely tall 44+ inch or taller tire that is wide that is used for low pressure applications such as ice/extreme snow but if you look closely from a construction point the height and width are kept proportional to allow proper contact…..other than these very specific instances a narrower tire will yield much better traction deflated and overall will put less wear and tear on the vehicle due to less weight and slightly lower rolling resistance than the same height in a wider width….the biggest eye opener is sand…..I’ve had a narrow tire aired down get me in and out trouble free twice as many times as a wider tire of the same or bigger diameter also aired down….the LONGER footprint acts more like a track than a tire…..this is where many consumers and nearly all tire manufacturers miss the buss….one or two manufacturers are starting to see the light but there needs to be more tire options in a 33-35 inch by 10.5-11 wide profile….there are 3 255/85/16-17 options that are ideal for overlanding and of course the 285 that is all but a dead horse by now….a true 34/11.00 would be a blessing in a 16-18 inch rim….the bigger wheels are also ridiculous but that’s its own topic altogether.
