I tell a true story of the most expensive chainsaw chain replacement interval EVER! Talk about cheap vs expensive chainsaw chain...this beats all. The best chainsaw chain for cutting firewood is a sharpened chain. Learning how to sharpen a chainsaw chain is easy and can save you hundreds of dollars on the homestead, farm, or ranch. Know your chainsaw chain life and just take the time to learn and do. This vid isn't a how to but more of when to sharpen and when to tell it's time to replace chainsaw chain according to the saw chain wear marks but most of all NOT to throw a chain away just because it's dull and won't cut! I demonstrate with my small Stihl Saw.
May All Your Branches Become Full of Fruit.

look ... i know that your intentions are good but ya don't sharpen a chainsaw with a RAT TAIL FILE ... you use a ROUND FILE ...... there is a significant difference in the two types of file ... if you use a rat tail to sharpen your saw you will have a very dificult time doing it because a rat tail file is tapered so the angle of cut changes all along the length of the file ..... my guess is that you already know this and prolly just mispoke ... but considering you are talling a story about a guy who dont know much about saws, it may be confusing for people who watch this and go tothe stor for a rat tail instead of a round and then they wonder why they cany sharpen their saw very well ya might want to do one of those notations in the video explaining that you meant a ROUND FILE

Hmmmm....I don't remember what I said in this vid but I'm guessing that you heard me say 'Rat Tail' and therefore I must have. You are absolutely correct in saying that there is a BIG difference and It would possibly throw ppl off. I can't do anything about the vid now But....I will certainly Pin your comment to the Top of this comments section in hopes others will read it. I should have stated 'ROUND FILE' for sure. Good call and good point. Thanks.

I literally just taught myself how to sharpen a chain yesterday, took me about 20 min to learn, and I spent the next few hours sharpening 2 chains.

That's a crazy story, but not surprising. We have become a disposable culture. Thanks for dropping a bit of knowledge. 👍

I'm am totally certain some idiot MUST have thrown out the whole saw because it was dull.... maybe not a chain saw, but a skill saw or something. I KNOW that guy must exist out there....

Great video....... If you are going to homestead, farm or live a productive rural life you need to develop a wide range of knowledge and skills or you will end up spending a heck of a lot more money than you'd think. I try to do as much as I can with as little reliance on others as I possible. It forces you to learn and develop new skills which in the long fun pay off big time!

Liked the video and some good information. I don't sharpen my chain saws but I have a brother for that. I work on his computer, he works on my chainsaw and lawn mower.

I didn't realize you can file all the way down to the guideline. I would have figured the cutters would snap off when they got that small.

Oh no....you can use the chain...I guess you could look at it like the small and thin teeth of any cross cut hand saw. That hardened steel can take it and the gauge of the chain is thicker than the hand saws. Like even a hacksaw. It's a wear mark too. Lot of life in those chains so long as we don't booger them up so much. LoL

Oh by the way....there's suppose to be a chain in the lost Boomerang box for a FarmBoss.....That's the chain that got pulled from the trash in the story of the YT couple I was referring to. They threw it away so I kept it to put a sharpening on it but they never returned for it. Imagine that. It's a good chain. LoL

O.k., so I bought this little 12" Kobalt battery powered chainsaw. ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJxlf9p1mLTah5s.html ) I had a bunch of smaller trees I needed to cut down and, I'm sorry, but those pull cords on the gas saws just tear up my shoulder. So I figured I'd get me a spare chain to have, just in case (like I said, I have a LOT of small stuff to cut down). Well, the Lowe's where I bought it didn't have the right chain for it. Alright, so I figured I'd at least get me a file and sharpening jig to sharpen the chain with. Again, they didn't have the "right" one for the saw. I didn't even know there were different ones for different saws! So I finally read a little more in my manual for the saw. And they claim that "the chain should remain sharp enough to cut for the life of the saw." Well, that doesn't give me much confidence in the longevity of the saw! 🙄

I looked into the saw you seem to have and the Lowes replacement chain Item # is 1443 according to their web site but looking further It should be the same size chain from Oregon part # S45. The chain very well could last the lifetime of that saw BUT it will still have to be maintained or sharpened AND we have all at one time or another ruined a chain or two with rock, nails, or fence staples SO I definitely would have spare chain on hand UNLESS they really don't plan on THAT saw to last very long. LoL ( www.lowes.com/pd/Oregon-12-in-Replacement-Saw-Chain/50155560 ).
@HoneyHollowHomestead
@HoneyHollowHomestead 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's the #S45. I just found it rather annoying that the store where I bought the saw had neither the chain nor the file I would need for it. I was told it would have to be ordered. Or, I could dive a distance to another Lowe's. Other than that, the saw has been doing the job I need it to do, without wrenching my shoulder to start it. 😉
@3basketliving
@3basketliving 5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to be a Lowes....I get my Oregon chain from my local auto parts store...any place that sells chainsaws will probably sell chain too. Maybe even a Wally world might where your at. That's a pretty crappy Lowes if you can't even get a chain file or kit. JMO

I agree. They had some sort of file jig, but the sales person said it was the wrong one for my saw. I don't know anything about it. I will check out other chainsaw dealers.

What's your opinion on chains? Is it worth paying more for a stihl chain or a cheaper brand. You can buy two county line chains for the price of one stihl. I just found your channel. New subscriber.

Hello and welcome. I have bought "cheaper" chain and even what the said was Oregon chain coming off of a roll at the retailer. I have problems with in situations where the cheaper chain Stretches and does so to the point beyond what I can adjust the tension on the bar so I just end up with a loose chain that is dangerous and also that cheaper chain requires sharpening ALOT more often. Stick with chains such as Sthil, Oregon, and such AND NOT that stuff coming off a 'Roll' from the retailer. They claim it to be the better brands and just put it in one of the brand name boxes. That's been MY experience. Hope this helps.
