Just because something is expensive does not necessarily mean it's good or worth your hard-earned cash. However, in general, I really think that you do get what you pay for. Some expensive luxury brands are just better. Better quality. Better craftsmanship. More singular and unique. In this video, I'm sharing six expensive products that I think are totally worth the money.

Watching these videos always feels like some kind of awakening to me - because most people I know would not even spend 300 euros to buy a suit. In Finland where I live, many men just buy the cheapest suit they can find, and even 100 to 200 euros feels expensive for them. They only wear a suit when they absolutely have to, and that is maybe 1-2 times a year, or not even every year . When they talk about wearing a suit, it's like they are talking about some kind of terrible tragedy. That has always been something I can't relate to, and I'm often frustrated with the fact that it's very hard to dress sharp here without grabbing too much attention. In the office where I work, people just wear cheap jeans and hoodies, for example. It's just a part of our culture that you must be humble and unnoticeable, many people still find it strange when men care about their looks. There was recently a survey about the places where men do their shopping in my country - and the result was that the most common place to buy clothes is a hypermarket. Men just grab something cheap to wear, as fast as possible, when shopping their groceries. That's just sad.

There is a young KZfaqr - username ReportofTheWeek, he does fast food reviews. He ALWAYS wheres a suit -vintage suits that fit really large for him, but he loves the way they look. Very inexpensive ones too. But the reason i bring him up is because he said in a video the reason he always wears a suit is because he like the way he looks, and doesnt care(anymore at least) that he looks out of place.His point from my perspective was to dress in a way that makes you proud of yourself.

Love the video. One I would add is “airline travel luggage”. For years I purchased cheap or mid tier carry-on bags and since I fly every 2 weeks for business I’d go through 2-3 suitcases a year. Wheels break, handles stop working, etc. I bought a Rimowa Topas Stealth in carry-on size and it has lasted me 2 years already (knock on wood). Worth every penny

@@Lee-ss5nv Perhaps you should get out more. In Australia, with the arrival of major international clothing shops and greatly reduced cost of every day wear, such as jeans and chinos, I think that a lot of men now replace their jeans within the year. I travel mostly by public transport and I rarely see anyone wearing jeans that show any signs of wear. Phil.

One of my favorite denim brands is Naked and Famous out of Montreal Canada. They buy premium Japanese denim, but sew the jeans in Canada to provide a slightly more affordable Japanese selvedge denim jean at under $200. Also, they have all sorts of crazy denim blends include kevlar, steel, very heavy weights (32oz), as well as interesting collaborations. I think I now own 5 pairs, but I really appreciate each one, and since I work in a more casual environment, I get to wear jeans daily.

Totally agree on MTM suits and Frank Clegg. I don't think people realize that going MTM adds a slight cost but results in a much better fit than off the rack. As for Frank Clegg, I love the quality leather, the fact that it's made in Mass, and that it isn't covered in logos that draw attention to their products (see Louis Vuitton or Coach). As for shoes, I've been extremely happy with Magnanni. Extremely good quality at a reasonable price point for good dress shoes. Good video, Brian!

@nursen2106
@nursen2106 5 жыл бұрын
isn't the problem, that quality is hard to get? so quality is luxury and what is sold on a price scale that is luxury by definition going by the average income? I think a major problem of today is, that often even those, who would like to produce solid quality items, have problems to get the material they would need to produce them. and in case, they can get them, they would have to order in higher quantities, to have a fair share in the profits. because, you cannot go too high with the prices anyway - unless you have a unique style and local customers!?

Over the years, I have had extremely good quality with Oxxford made to measure, and Brioni made to measure. I own bespoke suits from Saville Row, by Gieves and Hawkes, and Joseph. They are like wearing artwork. While expensive, they are values when one thinks I've owned these suits for over two decades, and they look as good as the day I picked them up in London. That makes them more than competitive with department store ready-to-wear. The right bespoke ends up being an heirloom item.

In terms of MTM/ custom, I've had great luck with Black Lapel (1 dinner suit and 16 suits later) and I just purchased my second Oliver Wicks suit. Black Lapel has been very consistent with its sizing in my experience, and they have a pretty good selection of fabrics and styles. Oliver Wicks has slightly more customization options and some bolder styles, but either is a solid choice.

Totally agree with the denim theme, I own some well tailored mtm denims (which doesn’t need to be mtm) for 200€ which are fantastic. But I have to say that, hate me or love me for that, I made really good experience with the 50€ Hollister denims. Sure the color isn’t the very same after 2 years. But I wear most of them for over 4 years now and they still look good.

In The Netherlands: Suitsupply entry level suit (S110's) = 279€ + Tailor is around 60€. No idea why tailoring is so expensive in America but for my body type this is a much better deal. Very high quality video btw.
@nursen2106
@nursen2106 5 жыл бұрын
as long as you find a suit (jacket) that fits in the shoulders, the tailoring shouldn't cost that much. arms and trousers length - about 60€. I would say, this is what you would pay in a regular tailor shop in Vienna too. in case there is more to do round the shoulders, the length of the jacket might be a problem etc. then it does make a huge difference. and paying about 100-150,- for that kind of tailoring for a suit on about 250-300,- that usually doesn't look proper too long - esp. when worn regularly. that is just too much money for tailoring . you probably are lucky considering shoulders back and size etc. my partner doesn't wear that often suits, but if he would want to avoid too much tailoring, he would have to buy Italian brands or much better, directly in Italy. his size fits more to Italians. then only minor changes are needed.
@nursen2106
@nursen2106 5 жыл бұрын
PS: As far as I know, in the US it does not only depend on the state and city you live in and what kind of tailors you can find in your surrounding, it also depends on, which one of the existing ones you prefer or dear to go to. there are some districts with either immigrants or US citizens, with migration in their family history, that offer the job to fair prices. but some either don't trust them, because they fear, they would not treat you as a valued customer, as you don't pay that much anyway, or they just feel a barrier to go to them. where I live (Vienna/Austria) some male friends tell me, they love to go to the Turkish tailor shops and even barber shops. they find, they do the job just as well to a much better price. others fear to get standardized service and don't see, that they can explain themselves, the service they came for etc. I think, there are shops with different price ranges everywhere. maybe one still just considers a higher price range as accessible.((Vienna: shorten trousers: 10,- (seen in a tailor shop and also that price seen in a store charged for the same service) 15,- and once I even saw the same service for 30,-. the last tailor did look exclusive I must add))

I would say two the things mentioned for me are the Boutique Colognes for unique fragrance scent and the Frank Clegg for the custom leather bags. I only discovered Frank Clegg briefcase bags and duffle overnight bags last night watching quite a few your vids and where you left a link in description under to the video to Frank’s website. I was in awe at the leather bags and much outside my considered price range. But I’m willing to save and invest in one of each bag liking the leather grain and craftsmanship. So I’m willing to splurge on a elegant briefcase and travel bag. Cologne aside . And thank for the book recommendation about how luxury goods book. Will surely be checking that out.

I totally agree with every said here 100%. When my job required me to dress up - i didnt know sh*t about clothes or style really. The first 2 years i wasted a ton of money on dress pants that would get quickly damaged after 3 months of use - dress shoes that would wear down after 4 months - shirts that made me look like a muffin top. Point being is - save your money for quality stuff. And also research brands and products - sometimes you dont have to break the bank to buy quality stuff. I spent 200$ on 5 dress pants and they have lasted me 2 years now.

I agree to a point about bespoke tailoring ,however as long as you do your research and you can purchase a good canvased /half canvased suit and have it adjusted by a good tailor and it will look as good as a bespoke suit on most people .Yes bespoke in general is the best way to go if you can afford it i myself saved up many years ago and had a suit made by a well known London tailor and although it is a great suit i can honestly say that my off the peg suit collection looks and fits just as well but each to his own i guess.Great video as usual cheers.

Regarding the suits, every store out there that you can buy suits of the rack, offers free alterations in order to have better fit. Of course a custom made is always better because except the fitting you can find better garments in a better price and of course you don’t pay for the label but just for the garments and the work that the tailor does.

Suit supply size 38 (Havana) + 50 dollars alterations and Brooks size 40 (Malino) about 80-100 dollars of alterations. I would say that at 5'10'' with an athletic build, I look a lot like a manikin, though. I love both those companies and have OTR suits from them and Pini that I wear often. MTM I use a local shop and here in Seattle, but they also have locations in UT and CA. Beckett and Robb, but for my value, I usually end up close to 2k there.

Of course, everybody has his/her favorites. Ludwig Reiter is a family owned company from Vienna, Austria and makes unbelievable shoes, belts, cases, etc. And you can order shoes in sizes 12 1/2, 13, 13 1/2. Prices for Derby shoes are around €700 and a bit more for Chelsea Boots, €200 for belts. Ludwig Reiter products are expensive, but the leather is in my opinion very rich and the money is very well spent. I have 2 suits from Scabal, which is a fabric manufacturer. I am 6’4 and and it is frustrating to look for a suit with a great fabric in my size. I order them made to measure, which for me has a good value. The fabrics are rich, the suits are well made. At the end of the day, spending more than €2’000 for a suit is a lot of money, but I think they are worth it. Thank you Brian for your suggestions, even as I reply very late.

I would recommend trying out independent perfumery especially those made in USA. There's a lot of good work coming out and they tend to be more fairly priced and ethical then the 'masstige' options. One house that I have been impressed by is Hans Hendley, which is made in Brooklyn. My favourite from that house is Bourbon. The other one i like is Bruno Fazzolari (based in San Francisco) although he has a bit of a 70s sensibilities which may not suit everyone's taste. D&S Durga is another option too, i think they just opened a boutique in NYC.

@@hespokestyle Yeah for leather goods I have an Epi leather LV cardholder and i smile everytime I pull it out, a nice coach duffle and Boss briefcase and passport holder, all great products. And it;s still snowing here in cnaada so I haven't really taken out the boots, however I got them treated and a thin vibram sole put on underneath to preserve them for years to come. The fit and finish is minimalist and yet so well executed. The smell and quality of the leather is there and the construction is great. What got me was when i unzipped them and slipped my foot in, I'm sure they use supply calf leather - and in a chat with a friend apparently Saint Laurent value for leather and footwear is amongst the top heavy hitters. They very comofrtable to wear as well - just like the SLP 01 Low top sneakers they make. THose are also incredibly made
