Running a fun little experiment here on pulling excess nutrients from a pond. If you're watching this in the future, check the comments that's where I'll update. Thanks for watching!

Solar pump, charcoal, sand, charcoal, sand... five buckets and split your water lines to all five buckets and you will have the cleanest Pond water ever. Automatically you will charge your biochar for plants. So don't throw it out, cook your sand and reuse it. Separate it by robust cheesecloth so it doesn't get messy. Set the buckets on the shore and let the water come out from the bottom. Good luck with your endeavor.

Thanks for the suggestion! I may have to try this for our pond. We have sandy soil anyway, so I may try to use it and just dig new each time instead of baking it.

I think to test on how it works u need to carryout an initial psycho chemical and microbial analysis then compare the results with the analysis of the water after u have remove the biochar from the eutrophic pond@@rachelholdt6840

Was there ever a follow up video to this? It looks like you didn't wash the ash out of the char, before crushing it, and i am not sure that is enough, but I am trying to determine how much is needed.
@HoneybeeHollowGardens
@HoneybeeHollowGardens 3 ай бұрын
@@madflower8723 No, the bags ended up disintegrating in the pond. I was contacted by a student from Cornell who is conducting this same experiment, so I'm confident this should help clean up excess nutrients. As far as the ash, I didn't have much, from what I remember. When making biochar, you try not to burn down the wood to ash form. I would probably wash it out if there was a lot though.

@@HoneybeeHollowGardens The company BiocharNow uses biochar for water remediation. It will work, the question is how to implement it effectively. I am going to try just casting large laundry bags from the dollar store with a rope to see if that works. I will screen it so the particles are larger. Everything smaller can go into the garden. Your ash might have dissolved when you hit it with water to put it out. It might have been the camera light angle that made it look white.

Great to see a fellow biochar convert. We'd never heard of it unti a few years ago. Along with going fully organic, integrated biochar system with a herd of loveable goats, has helped transform the awful soil conditions on our farm. Quick, easy & free to make (in a cone pit), it's almost too good to be true. Good luck with your experiment (probably a lot quicker way to inoculate the char than using the compost or manure method.) We'll be doing the same thing in our fishing lake during the next dry season. Cheers Leigh and Toon.

Just attended a conference in Scranton PA and a representative from Metzler, a company that has been researching and providing bio char and bio char compost. They have had some success in reclamation projects ( storm water cleaning) and vegetable gardening. I believe Penn State has a educational video about this. It was very enlightening.

When Jess was talking about getting that polluted compost I knew that’s what I had in one bed. The one bed I bought compost for instead of making my own was the one that killed ALL my tomato plants I put in it. I put some biochar soaked in duck water onto that one bed and after two times watering it was able to keep and grow other tomato and pepper plants and my okra went absolutely crazy!

I was taught to put charcoal from the fire pit or fireplace onto mud puddles that seem to always gather mud rather than growing grass to end the mud problem. It worked so we started spreading the ash in the chicken run to get mixed with their droppings and soil. After months we scrape up the run soil and add it to the garden beds to amend. Plants put on growth after looking like they were readily to be pulled AND beds are richer coloring of soil than best bagged compost.

I add charcoal to my coop bedding all the time. Easiest way to "charge" it. Also add fine charcoal to chicken feed. No better way to "charge" char.

A YT channel "Life Uncontained" had a nasty pea soup green pond. He installed a solar aerator ( Oct 2, 2022)..pond turned from dark pea soup green to translucent brown within weeks. As you make compost tea with an air bubbler, perhaps an aerator plus biochar bag filters would greatly enhance your results.

I will I’m a microscopic Gardener lol I have a cinder block planter 6/5 and various storage tubs that I use for gardening. It’s very hard to inground garden here because of our infamous California gophers. Anyways I’ve had ponds in my backyard and in my front yard in the past with Koi in them I live in Southern California so it gets pretty hot and algae grows very fast. I learned from one of the girls at Petsmart about oat bales. Oat bales reduce the algae, you just sink them in your pond with a rock on top and it gets the algae out ! besides using a brand new toilet bowl scrubber lol I wish you nothing but the best Will -you’re an awesome man! Keep gardening!🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱 P.S. I don’t know if y’all have a problem with mosquitoes but here in LA County we have the (mosquito vector control ) They supply us with mosquito fish that eat the mosquitoes. For people with ponds n such . I wonder if you could get mosquito fish there?? Take care and be safe.

Seems like a cool idea. I would recommend planting the edges of the pond. Fast growing willows that you coppice each year will pull massive amounts of nutrient from your pond.

Water sample test before and after might be good. If you want to clean pond and also produce some poultry feed, duckweed. Would have to keep ducks out of it, but a simple lagoon could easily be built. Here, in Florida, I use guppy grass in my water systems to soak up nutrients in water. I then harvest it as a green manure for composting pile. Interested to see how this goes.

If you knew someone who knew how to crochet (hehe) perhaps they could crochet you some market net bags to reinforce the paint bags. If they were crocheted with polyester yarn or poly fiber they won't compost in the water. They could even be crocheted with plarn, a fiber made from waste plastic bags & such.

There is another KZfaqr, David Pagan Butler, who helps folks clean up ponds, etc to be good for swimming. One of his ideas to remove excess nutrients from the water is to float garden rafts (sounds a little like chinampas.....) in the pond filled with plants (in rocks no soil) that must pull their nutrients from the water, effectively cleaning up the excess nutrient issue. He consulted with a british estate owner (Mapperton, home of the Earl of Sandwich!) on their 18th century pool and has helped them clean it up a lot.

I can’t remember what I said in this video, it’s been a few years. But this stuff was burned in a low oxygen environment. Dug a hole & burned all day, constantly throwing limbs on then I put it out quickly with water. I may have been referring to it not being ‘charged’, which the eutrophic pond was then tasked to do
